How Accurate Is The Calorie Counter On Your Exercise Machine?

Just curious if they are accurate or even close to being accurate.

I'm about 225lbs and 5'10"

I've been using my elliptical (newer Proform machine) and I've usually go for at least an hour using high resistance.

Today I went 2.5 miles in about 70mins on high resistance(12-15) and according to the readout, I burned 1400 calories.

Seemed like a bit much, but I usually do 2 miles and burn around 1100 ( according to the readout)

How do you guys judge how much you burn in a workout

Hope you're joking about 1100 calories for 2 miles. :x

10 different calorie counters will give you 10 different calories burned numbers. I honestly don't think there is one specific, right way to calculate calories burned but everyone thinks their method is the best one.

When I go for my long runs and check my calories burned afterwards, my GPS watch gives me one number, a separate online running calories burned calculator gives me a different but pretty similar number, and the website I use to log my runs gives me a third and completely fucked up/drastically different number.

The fitness app I use on my ipad( my fitness pal) shows about 300 less than what my machine says.

I'm just curious is all.

Do you have a HR monitor linked to the watch? That will help a little.

I do not. But I figure my height, weight, age, distance, pace, overall time etc would be sufficient

But yea yea I know HR monitors are a good thing to get. I just don't really feel like wearing that strap all the time.

Figure 600-650 Cal/hr or so at the very most.

I ride my bike with a powermeter, which measures my power output at the rear hub in kJ. Figuring in a typical metabolic efficiency of a cyclist (23%-ish) and kJ/Cal (4.2 or so) gives very close to a 1:1 relationship between kJ and Cal.

When I do a ride where I go as hard as I can for an hour, I'll burn about 600 Cal/hr. You're a bit heavier than me so uprate it a bit. That machine sounds like it's only off by about 100%.
