Thumbs up ***Type-S intake manifold on a CL-P discussion thread***

I've been getting asked left and right about the Type-S IM on my car a lot lately.

I figured I'd make a thread about it for the guys that own a CL-P so if they want to do it, why not?

You ask why?

I guess I'm leading the way for CL-Ps... who knows?

I got the idea from the mega mod NSXNEXT. He said he was going to do it, but I don't think he has gotten around to it. When I found a Type-S IM on the BM, I jumped on it like white on rice. I spent less than 300 bones on an IM that came off of a Rick Case motor. It was a steal!

So when I got around to installing it, it took about 3 and half hours...mainly do to getting tired of bending over for long periods at a time and having a few beers.

But I'll tell you this, it is probably one of the better performance upgrades I've installed on the engine.

To have the IM work to it's full potential you have to buy a switch for the IMRC or it's worthless to have. Trust me. I had the idea of take the inner plates out, leaving them completely wide open and complete closed. I wasn't happy until I installed the switch.

I bought a digital switch from Ebay. I found a seller that was selling PN 8969 from MSD and was a hell of a lot cheaper than buying from the manufactuer.

I got help from a friend on v 6 p for hooking it up. So if you need help. Post here.

And I'll be glad to answer any questions that need be. Hopefully this will be easier for the guys that want to do this mod. Just please do yourself a favor and not buy brand new, they are very expensive. Do searching around for a good used one.

What was the hardest part of the installation? And how benificial would it actually be to other P'er's?

Hardest part...probably remembering where all the plugs go...it would be in your best interest to mark them with tape of what goes where.

The benies?

More power in the top end when VTEC engages.

The V2 does NOT connect to the IM. It connects to the TB. Remember, CL/TL-P has one TB, the CL/TL-S has 2 TBs.

The 2nd TB on the type-s is used for the VSA, something the premium models don't have.

Will it fit? Technically BUT the TLP throttle body is 2.75" OD and the TypeS is 3" OD so you'd need to get a reducer. AND performance will be hindered slightly from someone with a 3" intake.

Don't forget guys, you need the IMRC which looks like this

(borrowed pic from here https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...ight=IMRC+pics)

And you need a window switch, I bought the MSD PN 8969.

Lightbulb

For the people that need help wiring this bad boy up...it's pretty easy, just follow the step by step and it'll work!

Alright here's a good write up for the MSD window switch (PN 8969)

The window switch needs to be set to "6-cylinder"

The Red wire is its On/Off power wire...connect that to any power wire you wish.

The Black wire is your ground. Connect it to the battery, or any place that sutes your needs.

The Gray wire is NOT used. Cut it off if you'd like.

Connection for the white wire to the RPM sensor

Connection to the IMRC to the window switch

What the butterfly should look like when closed

When you are all done, make sure you set the open switch to 3800, that's when the IMRC opens, you can set the closing RPM to anything you'd like because when the RPMs drop below 3800 the IMRC will close automatically.

If you have any QUESTIONS about the setup, please post here and not PM me. Thank you.

I am assuming that you switched to a type-s TB as well. Did you just leave the VSA one off?

That's what I did. There is no reason to keep the VSA TB since it doesn't work on the CLP/TLP. Just adds more restriction.

The only reason you might consider it is if you had a CLS intake since it would be too short to reach the throttle body with the VSA unit. Nothing a coupler and a small piece of 3 aluminum piping can't fix.

I am dying to do this however i am having a hard time getting the parts. There was a guy parting out his wrecked car but he flaked out... do you guys have any suggestions as to where to look? I know i can order them new from Acura but the cost is a little steep. Did you guys get them from a junk yard or from members of the site?

Instead of having the Type S TB you can also Have it big bored by KM. Just a thought.

Can a mega mod sticky this in the CL performance section?

I have to turn off my pms for a while. I get the same questions pmed to me over and over again. Too much redundancy. If you have AIM and I'm on there I don't mind talking there, but my inbox gets full every 2-4 days.

Like I said before, questions about Type-S IM, IMRC, and MSD switch get posted here.

Thank you.

You have to adjust the nuts where the IMRC holds the cable.

The nuts have to be threaded closest to the actuator.

Hey greenie, could you give us a rough estimate on all the parts and about how much all of them cost individually?

The window switch should cost no more than 100 dollars.
The IMRC should cost around 100 dollars.
The intake manifold might cost you some cheeze, up near 500 dollars new. I recommend searching and lurking for a used one so you can get a price break.

Good luck finding a used intake manifold. Most salvage yards won't part it out as it's an integral part of the engine.

The throttle body should cost you ~$125 from a salvage yard.

You CL guys are lucky. The 99TL requires all these extra parts:

lower IM (2) f/r
fuel rails (2) f/r
FPR and piping

Luckily I was able to get mine from Kris when he did his TypeS/6-speed swap

Bumping, this is still generating noise for the P'ers.

And it's going in the FAQ too.

sweet, please do. It really is an easy installation, the difficulty of it is only if you don't know how to hook up the IMRC and the switch. Everything else is nuts and bolts.

I saw that NSXNEXT did but I was wondering if you did. Also if you did, what about the metal pipes that feed into the TB?

I got my TB honed out by King Motorsports. Honed out > than Type-S.

The pipes that feed into the TB are the same.

who'd you get in touch with at King Motorsports to get them to do that? And that was just your clp TB, or a cls TB?

hey greanie, got another question...I found a type S IM but the injectors have been pulled from it. Do you know if the injectors are the same for the P as the S?

just call them up. I don't remember who I talked to. It was just the CLP TB. I can tell you that the injectors from the Typs-S should fit the P no problem. Most of the parts from the two engines swap in and out. I know that the S2000 injectors fit...

so basically everything you need is type S intake manifold, IMRC, and window switch?

How hard is installation?

intake manifold is just bolt nut, shouldn't be that hard
what about the IMRC and switch, where do they go?

Big Lizard, do you think it is possible for you to write a detailed instruction and all the parts required to do this set up?

Do you have dyno result after the set up?
thanks

GreenMachine,

I got everything hooked up with the exception of the MSD switched power. What 12 volt source did you use? i was going all over the manula and was having trouble finding a good one.

I just use the battery. It barely uses any juice when the engine is off. A really good source would be to use the power wire running from the ignition switch.
