I drove the 2011 BMW 5 series with a HU display - that was amazing - everything from NAV and engine warnings (got a reduced engine power warning on the HU - just pulling out of the dealership - turned off the car - (like a reboot I figured) and the engine warning cleared -- but back on topic the HU was so much more than just a HU giving you your mph ...
My dad had a HUD on his pontiac before... I never got used to it, felt like more of a distraction than anything.

I have the HUD in my Z06, it has multifunctions (RPM, speed, gauge readings etc....). It may be because I dont drive the car that often but I really never warmed up to it, I still like glancing at real analog gauges...... I have it up all of the time but the only time I find myself using it is on the highway to check my speed occaisionally.
I would save your money if I were you.
