Will I be nuts to trade in my TSX for a V50?
I have always wanted a sporty wagon but I didn't find one that I liked (I didn't buy the 325xi wagon because I knew that the 3 series was going to have a major change soon). Anyway, I bought the TSX which I really love. However, it still annoys me no end that I can't get big items (like a chair, ladder etc.) into my car easily, if at all. Anyway, Volvo's V50 came out a bit too late, otherwise it would have been a choice. Anyway, CarsDirect now has a special deal for the V50 - a turbo AWD loaded with everything can be had for $33K! It's about $4000-5000 below the MSRP! I am so tempted..... or am I just a fool? Or maybe I should wait for the RDX?

My brother's V40 is a nice car, but not as nice as the TSX. It's definitely a trade-off.
I'm going to wait to see how my work situation changes. I'll ultimately probably replace this car at the end of 2005 or beginning of 2006 model year. Not quite sure with what, but at the very least it'll have a bigger trunk opening and a full-width pass through when the seats are folded down. Most likely it'll be some kind of wagon or small SUV though.

The only problem with the V50 is it's storage space really isn't all that useful. Sure it's still a lot bigger than the TSX but you're not getting a ladder in there anytime soon. Even a chair would be a tight squeeze unless it's really small.
If you need space you're probably better off looking at the V70 or SUV.

Ostrich,
If you're looking at a turbo option, have you checked out the Legacy GT Limited Wagon? It was one of the cars (coupe not wagon) that I test drove before getting the TSX. As Provench said it in another post (I think under the pics or RDX section) about the Detroit Auto Show, he was quite impressed at the interior of that car. I say give both a test drive and see what you think. I believe that the Legacy GT wagon will cost you less than the V50.
And like Dan said, bring a ladder with you to test the space on both wagons.

With the TSX, the way it's trunk opening, pass through, and folding seatbacks are configured, it can get tough to do that. I had never really considered those factors before because every sedan I ever had in my life came with a full-width passthrough, seats that folded down really well and a lower trunk lip that allowed me to easily slide stuff in. It's something I'll have to look out for more carefully in the future, because oversized items are pretty routine for me and the TSX doesn't handle them all that well. I have been using the Yakima rack far more than I did on other cars I've owned.

Uh, I like the V50, but after I get it equipped like the TSX, it's going for 35,5 on cars direct... and remember, it's a Peugeot underneath...
I just can't stand the B&O-inspired radio, which I hear ain't modifiable. Fiber optic out.

Thanks everyone! It's really true - a small wagon like the V50 probably is too small anyway, somethihng that I really never thought about..... however, as much as I know that the Subaru Legacy is a great car, I just don't like its looks. And the Volvo V70 is... err... very middle-aged! LOL! Also, my friend has one and it has endless electronic problems....
Maybe I should wait for the RDX then? LOL

Also, why give up an attractive sport sedan for a wagon which is a something you can always enjoy at an older age? If you need the haul stuff, you could always pick up a cheap truck or SUV. Just my

I have a sister-in-law who had a Volvo sedan, I forget which model, and she really enjoyed driving it. Unfortunately she didn't get to often enough as it was always in the shop for some problem or another. She dumped it for a Lexus ES330 and hasn't looked back.
Don't forget: Ford now owns Volvo...that is the worst F-word I know of, I yell at people for saying Ford in front of my kid. STEP AWAY FROM THE VOLVO

I don't think the V50 has enough space to trade in the TSX for one. Its alot narrower than the TSX and has less front and rear legroom. I'd agree with what was mentioned earlier. Keep the TSX and get the RDX when its available. You'll take less of a hit on the TSX trade or sale by then and your getting something that will most likely have alot more useful space.
Not to mention the SH-AWD factor.

I have a 2004 TSX and a 2004 V70. Both cars have about 17,000 miles, and I haven't had a lick of trouble with the Volvo.
The V70 is a luxurious, well built, comfortable car - but it's basically a Buick with European flair. It has confident handling, but it's not grin inducing like the TSX.
And no, I'm not middle-aged...at least, not quite yet.

<----- Sometime wishes he had a wagon (wagon envy). I like the looks at the Audi, but like Domn said, I am going to wait for the RDX. I would have got an TSX wagon (like the Euro Accord Wagon) for sure if we had one here

For the "transaction cost" of trading the TSX in on a V50, you could probably buy a NEW base Toyota Tacoma ($13,556 carsdirect.com).
Very basic truck, but it includes ABS.... and chairs, ladders etc. will fit.
It should last longer than you'd ever want it to.

If you wanted to make trade because of the Volvo seats, I couldn't argue with you, but there is not a lot of space in those wagons. If I need to transport something big and bulky, I use my wife's truck.

Thank you! You guys really talked some sense into me! I am gonna keep my TSX for now. But like Domn said, I might get the RDX later! And Bob, thanks for the tip on the V70!
So, what exactly is that "je ne sais quoi" thing that gives us the grin when we drive the TSX? What a wonderful car!
