What is the difference between Honda Accord and Acura TSX 4 cylinder engines?

A friend of mine recently bought a 2004 Honda Accord coupe with the 4 cylinder engine. I was very surprised that the Honda Accord now has a Dual Overhead Cam. It said 2.4 DOHC on the engine cover.

Is this the first time that Honda Accords sold in this country have DOHC?. I thought it was just reserved for the Acuras that were sold in this country.

Also, it seems that both engines are 2.4 liter engines. How does the TSX engine generate the extra 40 horsepower?

I would think that additional 40 horsepower makes very little difference in acceleration from a dead stop (at least initially). At highway speeds is where I would think it makes a difference. Am I wrong on this?

I will be getting a car this year. I am constantly switching between the two. I would get the Accord if it wasn't for that Hideous instrument cluster with that Huge speedometer. It looks so cheap. The TSX instrument panel is so much nicer.

Thanks for any responses.

I think you were thinking of the Honda V6 engines, which use a SOHC configuration. I believe Honda's 4 cyl engines have always had DOHC.

the TSX is a tuned version of the US Accord K24 engine with a slightly higher compression ratio. the TSX, unfortunately takes in premium unleaded fuel.

No, not quite. The D series (san the D16A1) and F series motors are all SOHC and have been used in some Hondas as recently as 2000. There are also a couple of H series motors that are SOHC.

I'm doing an educated guess here:

1) Higher compression (I'm not sure about this)
2) Advanced timing (thus requires premium)
3) Different intake and exhaust
4) Tuned for premium gas, etc.
5) Higher RPM redline.

EDIT:

Extra facts

Accord, TSX
1) Compression = 9.7 vs. 10.5
2) Mileage = 26/34 vs. 21/29

So overall, I'd say the TSX is dumping more fuel into the engine with better airflow and exhaust.

The accord's I4 only has VTEC on the intake cam. The TSX adds VTEC to the exhaust cam giving it a boost of power.

Sorry about that. I forgot the 2000's F series are DOHC.
