Should I buy this '05 TSX

I am looking at a car for the Girlfriend. Its a 2005 MR TSX with 122k miles and an auto trans. Black leather interior. Car has been repainted due to fading and looks great now. Interior is in really good shape also. She tends to keep her cars for a very long time so is this a vehicle that will last or should I look at a different year or model.

Any chance it's red? That's the only color I've ever heard of having faded to the point where it needs to be painted (though I could be wrong in places like Texas where the sun can fade anything). That said, if the car was maintained properly (which is less likely than you might think), it might be a good car for her. 122K miles is nothing as long as the regular maintenance was performed.

It is red. The MR with black leather interior. The first owner was a fleet vehicle and had all maintenance and carfax shows the rest of the owners had the regular maintenance done but not always at an acura dealer. They are wanting $10k at the used car dealer which is about a grand over KBB and about 400 over NADA for my area. The car is VERY clean though and I didnt see any leaks. I'm picking it up today to take to my mechanic and will run it on the highway on my way. Thats the only thing I didnt do on our test drive. Checked wheel wells and underside as best I could on initial inspection and didnt see any blemishes even under the car. No rust at all either. My main concern was the mileage. Want to make sure we don't end up with a money pit.

Don't buy a car that has been repainted due to "fading paint". How often do you see faded paint on any car, built within the last 15 years?

Also, buy an '06 TSX. I had an '05 and regretted not getting the '06. That's when the mid model refresh happened on the TSX.

you're also buying a car with 120k miles on it. There's no guarantee that it won't be a money pit. It's always a risk when buying a used car. Even if stuff looks fine now, there's no guarantee it will be fine in 6 months.

That's not to say this car will suck and fail everyday, but you never know. I'd look into what the common problems with the TSX are and go from there. If the car you want isn't showing any issues in those areas (from what can be inspected), then really, that's the best you can do.

Taco I understand theres no gaurantee but with that said there are some vehicles and models or model years that have common major issues so if I can find a vehicle without those then it can't hurt my chances.

Also I thought it was odd that the car had been painted and thought for sure it had been in a wreck but after doing some research I found almost every red tsx now has pink paint due to a defect in the paint. There was a warrantee repair for the paint for this reason. So in my opinion on this that basically fixes the issue I would have had if I had the factory red paint. As far as finding the commons issues thats why I'm here. While I do have this thread up I have been looking on my own to see if I can find any issues. I;m hoping people will post up things I may miss. So far Ive seen issues with parasitic battery drain, and alternator issues. Also starter but at the mileage they are saying they were replaced I consider it a maintenance item.

Im curious about this red paint... I've seen original red paint on cars from the 60s that was in terrible shape, but after 8-10 hours in the hands of a skilled detailer, the paint looked incredible again.

Case in point- here's some of my friend's work on original, 45+ year old red paint...

That being said, I wonder how much the owner of that car paid to have it repainted. You get what you pay for and i've seen many times cars that have been repainted that started to rust prematurely because there was shitty prep work done before painting.

I already told the dealer if theres no warrantee on the paint then theres no deal. Most reputable shops around here will give a lifetime warrantee on their paint. He said it does but I havent seen the paperwork yet. Once I see the paperwork on it and call the place to verify then I'll be satisfied with the paint.

I agree with you on the paint correction but I didnt see this car before hand so I couldnt say. The dealer had it painted though not the previous owner.

$10K sounds high to me, but the price paid is up to you. Just remember that in a few years you won't remember what you paid, and you won't care. I had an 05 (sold with 178K miles), and my wife still has her 07 (with over 225K miles). Yes, the 06-08 models have a few more do-dads, but I think the upgrades are overrated. Again, that's my opinion (but from someone who has/had both) and would not ignore an 05 if the price is right and it's what you want. They're all very reliable as long as they're maintained (with the exception of some 04's), so that's not an issue. The Honda/Acura Milano red (sorry, I don't use Acura "speak" to describe colors) does fade in time, and that's well known. The car is at least 10 years old, and if it sat outside, I'd be much more surprised if it didn't need to be painted. Remember you're talking about a 10 year old used car, so don't expect too much.

+1 10k sounds really high to me as well.

This is a 10 year old car now, when I bought a used TSX for 10k 5 years ago, it was a 6 year old car with 90k miles, fully loaded too with perfect original paint.

I know its not apples to apples comparison, but given the 100k+ miles, full repaint, and the fact that this car is 10 years old, I would not pay $10k for it. With that budget you can find a way newer honda/acura car with less miles.

Dealer will always charge more then private party sale too. I'm sure you can find the same TSX, same amount of mile etc for cheaper. I can't recall but doesn't the 05 have A/C issues or was that just the 04?

I was in the same boat as you, I wanted a 1st gen TSX nice body etc. Then I thought about it, even if I bought an 06 with under 100k, it's still a 9-10 year old car. In my area (I live in California every thing is more expensive) I was finding 06-08 TSX from 10-12k at dealers. Which I thought to myself why would I pay that much for a 9-10 year old car.
