Mine is 113,068 and I don't get the 5-8 sec lag at all. Try loading the default back on and see if you still get the lag. You can probably do this by doing "load disc" with the factory navigation disc I would assume.

see, 113,068 is the right size, when I load the default Navi it loads up perfect with no lag.

Can anyone get that matrix one to be 113,068? I tried so many things but to no avail, this is so strange

Heres the catch, the origional Honda/Acura Back.bmp has only 173 colors, which means its pallette header is only 173*4 bytes long.. so:

480x234 = 112,320 bytes + 54 byte BMP header + 173*4 pallette header + 2 byte null = 113,068 bytes in the origional Back.bmp.

480x234 = 112,320 bytes + 54 byte BMP header + 256*4 pallette header = 113,398 bytes in our aftermarket Back.bmp.

So for us to use an aftermarket splash screen with the full 256 colors that the screen can display, it would require the image to be compressed on to the BIN to make up for the extra 332 bytes. Honda made the origional BMP uncompressed because theres a delay in the time it takes for the shitty little Hitachi processor to uncompress a 110KB image (about 5 second delay, or so I've heard from this forum). So for you to use a full 256 color image as the splash screen there is going to be a delay. Speed or quality, take your pick.

I hope this clears things up.

I konw someone that did the Matrix screen, got it to 113,068 and has no lag at all over at V6P(he said he'll up the file to me tomorrow morning)

not doubting you, but I think there's another factor involved since it works for one person. Maybe is his less quality than the 113,398?? ahhh i don't know, this shit is giving me a headache, fck it i could care less.

AWESOME!!
I just redid the image to be 173 colors instead of 256, i re-updated the bin, burn it on cd, and "reflashed" the navi. Now the background image boots up INSTANTLY when I turn my key!!!!

Great explanation, bysin!

u dont necessarily need to dump the colors. just get it at 113,000 or slightly under.

instead of lessening the color, i sliced a piece off a side. very very very thin piece, cant even tell. and that made it small enough to load perfectly. no lag at all.

i also had the lag. had to redo the whole process after i chopped a thin piece off and it worked like a charm.

follow the directions exactly, dont miss a step, and dont redo a step. one smooth process from start to finish and it'll work for sure! take your time.

ayethetiense - when say slice are you talking about resizing the image itself so instead of 480pixels wide you used 479 or 478?

arcticcl9 - what program did you use to limit the colors to only 173?

I finally found an easy solution to the image size problem....start in photoshop with the original image the navi uses....now delete that entire image....take your new image and paste it on the canvas of the old image...now do a save as and the image should now remain at 113068 bytes...

hmm.. the new dumpnavi i just released (version 1.1) has a BMP checker in there to make sure all the dimensions are correct (480x234x8 with RGB encoding).. should I remove that?

so it needs to be in rgb mode ... after taking it to index colored mode (to make it 256 colors), should I then change the mode back to rgb? i.e., even though index color mode is 256 colors, it needs to be in rgb mode?

because when i take the 98k file (indexed color mode) and make it rgb and resave it, it jumps up to 332k

bysin,

Don't apologize dude. If you figure out, it'll be awesome! I've popped open the navi.exe file in IDA Pro and haven't a clue where to start. I thought maybe the nag-screen text could lead me to the instruction that's displaying it on the screen, but I haven't even found the nag-screen text. Is it in the same file? The reason I suspect it might not be is that the navi system is bilingual. If you switch the navi region to Canada, everything becomes available in French (at least that's true on my TL so it must be true on the TSX also). So that's why I thought that maybe all the text is stored in a dictionary file somewhere. Anyway, I'm looking at it when I get a chance, but it is really nuts. Good luck, and trust me, we're all patient!

How did you get IDA Pro to dump the ASM to a text file? I was looking for a way to do that...

Hi guys,

I am from V6P and wanted to thank Bysin for all of his hard work. This is really a cool mod to do to the Navi.

In order to get the bitmap to 113,068 (which will not create a lag when loading, at least not on mine it didn't) you need to change your RGB created image to an Indexed Color (Image > Mode > Indexed Color). Once inside the indexed color dialog box, chose Local (Perceptual) from the Palette drop down menu. Then input 173 in the Colors field. This will alter your colors in your image because you are limiting the palette, so you might have to make some sacrifices or changes to the image. Then save as bitmap, 8 bit. BTW, this pertains to Photoshop.

Hope this helps somebody out,
CrisK

i've been searching through the file too, i found a few things that may be it, but there isn't anything that actually says disclaimer. so they must have labled it something else

Has anyone tried it with a burner/software package that allows bit-setting? For those who don't know what I'm talking about, bit-setting allows you to write a marker on a DVD+R9 that identifies it as a DVD-ROM (an altogether different format, and universally compatible.) Several people who have had problems with DVD consoles not playing DVD+R9s have been able to make it work by bit-setting to DVD-ROM. Anybody who knows what I'm talking about and has the capability, give it a shot. Since I don't have my TSX yet, I can't be of any further assistance there...

Beoshingus,

I think they did try bitsetting... The problem is the fact that blanks cost $10 so it's pretty costly to screw up... I think that's why there hasn't been much of an effort there.

Sorry, bysin, I didn't mean you. I was talking to the guy who says he can't save images in Photoshop at 8-bit depth. The reason he's getting 16-bit depth only is that he's in RGB mode instead of indexed.

You can get a 5-pack for $27 here.

That's $5.40 each. Still not cheap, but I'd pay that if it meant I could make a full backup of my Navigation disc.

Correct. I believe someone asked me that many posts above.
From within photoshop, change to index mode from RGB mode, and when you're prompted for the number of colors (it defaults to 256) change it to 173 colors

btw, It's hard to notice much detail loss changing from 256 to 173 in my case, I don't even notice it myself, especially after displaying on the LCD. Now that it comes up right away, it's schweet!

Ok I've added a sorta no-nag fix. The thing is, a lot of processing is going on in the background when the nag screen appears.. So while I was attempting to remove the nag screen I ran into a few problems. I'm releasing a new version of dumpnavi GUI (1.2) that allows you to remove all the text, instead of the nag screen it'll just be a blank screen with a "GO" button.

I have a quick question for those knowledgeable in Photoshop. I’m still getting a bloated file size and I am not sure why. I am not well versed in Photoshop so forgive me if this is a basic question.

Anyway, I've created a custom image and save it according to the steps listed many times above… the file size was "huge". I did find a Preference to embed a preview of the image. When I shut off this option, the file size is only bloated a little bit now (127,884). In fact, I took the original image, saved it out as a copy, and it is larger than the original.

I am a PC user and attempting to use Photoshop on a Mac in our office. It is PS 7.0.

Does anyone know what else might be in the file that is increasing its size?

They all have 256 colors and not 173 colors.. so there is a delay.

Yo guys, finally fixed my damn lag problem.

THis is what I did *You don't need PHotoshop for this, Paint will do*

Just reduce the size to 475x234x8 and use dumpnavi console (not the GUI version because it doesn't allow the 475x234 size)

I did this on the Matrix logo and it worked like a charm, you can't even tell it was smaller especially with the way the image was

Good luck everyone, hopefully this should help some people. So my new filesize was 112,462. This is also good because u get to have 256 colors instead of 173

SO I guess it's all about file size, if it's equal to or less than 113,068 you're good

TIme to make a few more CD's with backgrounds for whenever I get bored or for every other week =)) Bysin keep up the great work brotha.

P.S. THe Navi no Nag temp fix u put out doesn't work on my 03 Accord, says can't not mod your navi, so I'm guessing it's just for TSX for now. Peace

This is awesome, bysin! Thanks for your massive contribution to the community.

I'm not sure I understand what is happening with the nag screen. Earlier, when you said you were able to remove it on your TSX, is that the same solution you're describing here (blank the page, but still hit GO)? I don't mind the text and all the additional initialization that's happening while it's displayed, but I'd love to lose the GO button and have it go straight to the map as soon as it is ready to do so. Theoretically, I guess, that means just skipping the code that waits for the GO button to get touched. Is that what you were able to do on your system?

This sure has me ready to go grab the disc out of my TL and give it a spin in my PC here at work!

Peace
That is a possible solution, but it is also silly, since you will be losing 5 pixels horizontally, or 5x234 pixels total. A much wiser solution would be to limit the color palette to 173 colors as has been discussed earlier.
