My engine temperature gauge shot up yesterday when the car was climbing a hill with stop and go traffic. The needle went over the mid way point for about 30 seconds and then back to normal when traffic got better. I pulled over and looked under the hood and I found only the passenger side fan was on. I assume that is the AC fan as my AC was on?

When I got home, I parked and idle the car for 15 minutes with no AC. The car kept normal temperature at just below mid way point on the gauge. The passenger side fan came on a few times but driver side fan didn't move at all.

Is this normal? I assume Driver side fan is the radiator cooling fan. When is that suppose to come on?

My car is 2007 TSX Automatic.

So I tested both fans with test leads connected the car battery. The AC fan turned on when it is connected but the radiator fan didn't. So I think I found the culprit as bad radiator fan motor.

Do I just order an oem motor online and replace it? or I need to order the whole assembly?

You can order OEM fan as a part and replace defective motor. See any Acura parts outlet.

When temp reaches 199F, both fans should come on and run. If AC fan (pax side) comes on and radiator (drivers) did not, then either bad fan motor, or less likely wiring/connector fault (check to make sure 12v available at connector).

I already have a new fan on the way. I'm also replacing the ECT sensor 2 at the bottom of the radiator. It's easy to access from the top with the fan out of the way. I read that it often fails because it is located in a high corrosion area.

How much does the fan cost? If the fan is bad (and not the sensor), I'd advise replacing both fans. They operate together, and like most things electrical that work in pairs, if one is bad, I wouldn't trust the other one.

I bought an after market radiator fan assembly for $65. I thought about getting OEM but it would be $115 for the motor alone. The AC fan looks totally different and hopefully it was built better.

The ECT Sensor I'm putting in is OEM however. I figure I should change it since I'll have access to it.

Just to answer my own post for future reference.

The TYC aftermarket fan fits and works great. When I started the car with AC on, both fan came on. When I idled the car for 10 minutes, both fan came on periodically. My engine thermostat has stayed below the mid way mark.

I also changed the ECT Sensor 2 located at the lower driver side of the radiator. Some posts say it is a high-risk part and the connection prone to corrosion. When I took mine off, it was in excellent condition with no corrosion at all. I replaced it anyway since it has 130k miles on it and I have the new part in hand.
