Need Advice on Trading TL for RL
I hope this won't get axed for cross posting, but I wanted to get both TL and RL forum members' opinions.
I'll sum it up. I bought my 01 LGM TL with 48k on it 2 yrs ago. Before that I had a WDP 00 TL. It had a free tranny done under warranty; then it got totaled. I came across the 01 and bought it b/c it was in MINT condition with low miles. I took out a little loan for it, which I'm paying off as soon as my tax check comes in. I owe about $4200 on it.
Today the transmission crapped out---and I mean out. I limped it to the dealer. I know Acura probably won't help, so I'll most likely have to get it towed to an independent shop for a $2000-2500 rebuild, which I'll get a 1 yr /12k warranty. Oh and my TL has only 72.5k.
Soooo....being that I will be back to skating on thin ice after the 1 yr tranny warranty is up on the TL, I thought about trading it for an 02-04 RL. I figure I can sell the TL fixed for around 5500, take out the 2500 cost to fix, leaves me about $3k to put toward an $8k RL. I'll take another small loan for the $5k difference and pay it off in a year or 2 and live worry free. I have had a TL since 2004 between my white one and this one--just kinda ready for something different, but I know my car otherwise is in excellent shape.
I love the older RLs and I hear they are built like a brick $***house. Basically no tranny problems like the TL, no major issues--just do the timing belt and routine stuff and enjoy.
Should I keep the TL once it's fixed or put a little with it, buy an RL and get a change of face to drive something different and live worry free? I know if I keep the TL, the tranny could go out at any time after that 1 yr warranty is up and it's all on me again. I think a higher mileage RL (about 100k) would still be more reliable than a TL at 72k if the car has been well kept.

Go for the RL, mine has been faultless, though I'm only at 51k

I just bought an 02 with 128K miles on it. I put about 2K miles on it so far and I must say that I truly enjoy it. It's a great car and for the money, there isn't much competition in my opinion.
Good luck with your search though, I found these to be somewhat difficult to find in my neck of the woods.
From all the research I did, the 1st gen RL's are as reliable as my 1st gen TL which is about 800 miles short of 250K at this point.
