Check Emissions System Light

Hey Guys,

Got my very first Acura last week.2010 RDX SH-Awd.
So far I love everything about it!

So my wife filled up gas in the morning. It says on the cap to tighten till it clicks so she did just that. As soon as she heard a click she stopped tightening. We drove around the whole day and towards the end of the day the Check Emission System light came on. Any ideas on what the problem could be? Do these cars have a history of faulty had caps?

Thanks for the help in advance!

You need to click at least three clicks after tightening the gas cap. Loosen the gas cap and tighten at least three clicks. You may need to go through several cycles or a day or two...depending on how you drive. I have a 2010 and this has happened on one occasion when the car was sitting in the sun.

If you have a code reader (or a nearby Autozone) you can have the specific code checked. This will at least tell you if the light may have been triggered by a loose gap cap or something else. Otherwise if the issue does go away on its own the light will eventually disappear once the car has gone through a few cycles without detecting the problem.

Thanks for the info. I have retightened the gap, will wait a couple days before taking it in to my mechanic to have the code read.

So the light went away this morning. I guess it was the gas cap after all. Got me sweating for no reason!

Thanks for the input

So the light came back on again and I hadn't filled up. Took it my mechanic turns out to be a P0420 code - catalytic converter efficiency below threshold.

Anyone else have this issue? Any solutions? Please tell me it's not the Cat itself.

So for people who are curious. The 2010 RDX have a service bulletin on them. There is a faulty flap on the fuel reservoir which causes the cat to go bad. I had both of my catalytic converters replaced (under warranty) and the fuel reservoir was replaced too. The light has been gone since.

RDX buyers please keep this in mind when shopping!

If you ultimately have to get a new cat I'd first suggest getting a defouler from HealToe automotive before you fix the cat. I just had the same problem (P0420) and got one and the light has not come back. Car is operating just fine.

Does this only apply to 2010 models?

Everything got done under warranty, but it was just painful going in and out of the dealership so many times.

Not sure if it's applicable for other years, but def 2010.

Thanks

actually there is a service news throught acura that if you run the fuel low like till the low fuel light comes on it leans out the a/f mixture to much and burns out the primary cat . under warrenty your covered after that your screwed . ask any acura tech . it's a common problem . the low fuel light comes on at about 20 miles left so fill it when it's a 1/4 tank . and rec use 91 to 93 only !!!!!!!!!! don't believe me go ask your dealer. treat your car right and this won't be a problem !

Your car does not adjust the a/f ratio simply because the gas is low. What you're describing is actually running out of fuel, which causes low fuel pressure, which then can lead to lean conditions in which the fuel doesn't ignite in the combustion chamber, but instead ends up burning in the cat, damaging it. Running out of fuel can also damage your fuel pump, so best to not let it run dry, but always filling it at 1/4 is overkill and not necessary.

This can happen in any car, but again, this is only if you're actually running out of gas and you can feel the engine sputtering. If you get to that point, just kill the engine and you'll be fine. For what it's worth, you can drive till the indicated range is at zero miles and still have at least 1/2 to 1 gallon left.

find out how much it is for the new cat installed then get a flash-pro and an rv-6 downpipe.
