Vin /production date

How seriously should I take production date when choosing a new car? Is there a big difference between January 2015 and May 2015, etc. Worth paying more for the most recently produced?

Since the TLX is basically a new car, the fact that the entire process will be "tweaked" for the first few months would make it more logical to buy a car that was produced longer into the run. I would assume that as time goes along the workers on the line, the process, the suppliers, the feedback, etc..... would give Acura, or any manufacturer, the ability to get the process more perfected.

I bought my car with a build date in late February 1 and I've been very lucky to have no flaws that I'm aware of.

I guess January/February is relatively deep into the process? The first were in August 2014? Any advantage then to going to 2015 July, etc.?

I don't know if anyone has found a correlation between older build dates and more transmission problems, etc.

Just for reference, the first TLX I bought last October had a VIN 10,000 numbers lower than the TLX I just bought in August, and the cars run exactly the same.

Just stay away from any US built car whose final assembly was the week of Thanksgiving, or so I was told at a young age by my older brothers...

The issue isn't just the parts in it, etc. The issue is that a Jan. 2015 car has been sitting on a lot (maybe outside) for 8 months. An Aug. 2015 car has only been out a month. From what I've heard, there may be aging from sitting that you can't notice unless you look at the internals.

Some aging from the internals just for sitting & not being used? I'd be more concerned about the effects of the sun, rain, snow on the paint/externals.

When I bought mine, I had requested a specific high(er) VIN number & build date. Arrived at the dealership to close the purchase, they had a different car sitting out front. I immediately noticed and went to their back lot searching for the one I targeted. It's a good thing I did, now I have a ZF 9HP transmission that doesn't experience any of the dreadful shift problems.

What VIN did you end up getting? I've heard obviously the paint is worrisome (maybe worse with black) and tires, among other things. There are additional problems with leaving it on the lot and not regularly using it/taking care of it, apparently.

8000+ Build Date 4/15

I test drove it from their back lot, it was really really dirty. Sales guy told me they parked it after truck delivery in their other back lot and was never test driven, other than Pre Delivery Inspection. A bonus which was a dealbreaker for me was no front plate. This was the only dealer in the area which didn't already have the front plate already drilled on during PDI.

About the paint, not much to be concerned about. Detailing will restore it to better than new.

Look at the VIN sticker in the doorwell on the driver's side of the car. The build date is on the first line, right-hand corner:

Actually was not able to tell due to the car being really dirty from sitting without being touched. The dealer's idea of "detail" is just wash the car. I have detailing experience & knew I could make the car look newer than new. Inspected it after their wash & it was fine.

This was helpful. I bought a 6k miles 2015 TLX V6 and was told the in-service date. I looked at this post, checked my car and the in service date was 5 months before the car was built. I talked to the dealer and they took delivery 2 months after the build date. They corrected everything and it gained me about 7 months of warranty . I'll burn the miles first anyway but nothing worse than feeling like you got ripped off, heh. They were very nice about it, so no biggie.

container rust that flakes off and lands on your car while in transportation. can cause discolor in paint if severe.
