Michelin Pilot Super Sports completey transform this car

The dealer price for the spare tire was outrageous, so I used that as an excuse for myself, and more importantly my wife. to pick up a spare set of wheels.

Ended up choosing some 19 inch Konig Oversteer wheels in the black opal finish, and getting PSS tires in the stock 245/40 size for 3 season use. The stock 18s will handle the snow, and function as a spare if need be.

I LOVE these tires. Put them on my Audi as well to replace PS2s, but the difference is much more dramatic on the TLX compared to the Goodyears.

No more squealing on tight radius turns like my parking garage at work, or during "u" turns. They just grip like super glue, and really allow the car to carve through bends. Combined with the AWD system, over the last few weeks I have yet to get them unsettled, or get a chirp out of them. They were also great in the downpours, and standing water several inches deep that hit the areas in, and around NYC a few days ago.

To quote Ferris, "If you have the means...I highly recommend them"

I recently put those on my 2012 TL. World of a difference over the terrible bridgestone turanzas the car originally came with. I will never go back to "all season tires", as they only combine the worst of both worlds.

I have Michelin Pilot Super Sports 245-40-R19 for my 2010 TL. I loved them

But they are pricy. Almost $400 CDN each tire.

I have never understood why Acura puts crap tires on its cars. The more savvy early reviews of the car even mentioned that.

And as far as all-seasons go, if you tried the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S3, you would be pleasantly surprised if not actually shocked at how close to the PSS they are.

Are there any cars they don't completely transform?

I've always put these (and previously the PS2 and PS3) on every ride I've owned...never any regrets other than wishing tread life was a bit longer.

I asked and was given the answer to why the Goodyears were used and I put it in an earlier post:

As I stated in an earlier post, the manufacturer does an evaluation of multiple tires and different compounds and they determine the tire they will use based on the totality of all requirements. My brother works for HofA and he spoke to the person on the team for selecting the tires for the TLX and was told that the GoodYears were the best overall tire for the car. It's based on lots of tests ranging from handling, noise, performance, wear, ride, ......

I'm surprised how well the tires seem to be doing on my car, but I've already purchased some 19" Michelin Pilot Super Sports and I'm going to be putting them on soon and then I'll have something to compare them to.

I have also gone to 19" wheels with the PSS tires and I agree that they make the car much more fun to drive. I'll use the stock wheel/tire combo for my winter set.

Agree that we need some photos, I always like to see what others have done with their changes.

I also have the PSS and I agree with the others on the difference they make.

I suggest shopping around. I was able to get them for around $220 Cdn or so from the dealer.

This is why the TLX needs a Type S and R models as the basic car is very capable. I agree that the Goodyear are quite and the car handles well enough. The current model satisfies the majority. I want more character and power. My M3 also runs on the Michelin super sports but the downside is wear. I can already imagine the complaints from the majority of owners if the tires only lasted 20000kms.

Most people with a single car or a car that is a DD are not going to be happy with summer tires especially if they live above the Mason Dixon Line.

Its possible they looked at the take rate on the 6MT & decided to bag them as an option.

Summers were an option on the 3G so I expect they have good data on them as a selling option.

These are the wheels and tires. The PSS tires are actually much cheaper than the PS2s which is surprising. The wheels were pretty cheap also.

Since I am keeping the stock wheels and tires for the winter, I figured why not just go for 3 season tires the rest of the year. Not regretting it all so far.

I put these tires on my S2000. It drives much smoother, quieter and the grip seems unending.

Matches the car way better than the stock 17's and 18's

The PSS vs PS2/3 pricing is indeed odd, and it has a better Tirerack rating to boot

Very nice, but likely the 19" wheels makes as much impact as the tires.. maybe more.

The Michelin PSS will pretty transform any cars that come with all season tires.

Congrats on the new purchase! Like the rims too.

Mr Hyde...Good choice on your tires and it was clever to use the stock as a spare if required. Love your choice for exterior color but I have to ask....Are those paint damage on your rear mud guard (driver side)?

Yup. Not sure what happened, but the paint flaked off when I hit the local hand wash place last week. They use some high pressure water, but nothing else was affected.

Bought the flaps after the car on eBay. Going to see if I can warranty them since they came from a dealer.

Thanks guys. Wheels are 19 a 8.5 with a 45 offset.

Thought wheels & tires belonged in the other section where you shuffled our other thread when we were talking about wheels & tires.

PS2 = old tire design and manufacturing technology = high price. In fact, the price hasn't changed much even since the PS2 was first released to the market.

PSS = latest tire design and newest manufacturing tech = lower price.

Car Talk is thataway folks. Back to the TLX please..

My take is that this thread lost pertinence to the TLX quite a ways back, and became a general thread on wheels for which there are more appropriate forums
So does this one about wheels & tires stay or go?

The tires transformed the handling while the rims transformed the styling. Very nice!

I think a slight drop (may be 1 to 1.5") would be even nicer!

PSS good. I've got them on my CTS-V.....so that's an indicator of what kind of good they are. I agree with the poster who said there is not a single car these cars don't transform. I'm even thinking about sticking a set on my Sport Hybrid, they are so good.

Nice-looking wheels, too, Mr. Hyde.

I have to take slight issue with this. I have a thread on TOV about the two stock tires... I've spent time with a friend's SH-AWD TLX recently driving on some familiar roads and on a wide sweeping onramp was able to achieve higher cornering speeds in my P-AWS than the SH-AWD solely because the Goodyear tires began squealing badly and giving up grip. The Bridgestone tires on my P-AWS grip harder and scrub rather than squeal when they begin to give up. I firmly believe the Potenza is a superior tire to the Eagle and is a better tire for the TLX (and, yes, I realize that's not saying much).

Well let's see, this thread talks about how these tires affect the TLX's handling. Very appropriate, especially considering all the knocks the TLX took from you in particular when compared to other cars on 3 season tires. Just wanted to point out that this car too does very well on summer rubber. Really feels like a different car.

The other thread had post after post taking about forged vs cast wheels, replica wheels vs OEM, etc, etc, etc....nothing to do with the TLX.

Yup you were talking about wheels and tires, and weren't even using the letters TLX in any of your posts. I did see A Ford Ranger, and other cars talked about though...appropriate for the TLX forum right?

Are you really too dense to spot the difference, or is this a poor attempt to antagonize me? If I thought it belonged in car talk, I would have put it there.

P.S. that thread wasn't moved either.

It depends where the tire is made. Michellen has many factories in US and Canada. Canadian made is very cheap now.

you can put Pilot Sport A/S 3 Z rated for $165 size 225/50/18. the is for TLX 18inch wheel.
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....toModClar=4cyl

But same tire US made with 225/45/18 for TSX is $188.
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....S3XL&tab=Sizes

The SS is made in France. I haven't seen the Mexico made Michelin.

How bout the PS3? I assume it's a new design with new manufacturing tech, and it's more $$$ than the PSS yet rated lower.

True that the PS3 is also new, but it is only available in very limited number of sizes - a total of 13 available sizes versus PSS's 105 available sizes.

Low volume = high manufacturing cost, and thus the high PS3 price.

I was going to get Michelin PSS but thought it's over kill for my 2.4 TLX so I got the Continental ExtremeContact DW instead.

Huh?

I wasn't saying that the Goodyear or the Bridgestone were good tires. I was simply stating that my brother who works for Honda of America Motors R&D, spoke to 1 of the people DIRECTLY responsible for choosing the tires, and that person told him that the tires were chosen because they were the best OVERALL tire based on all the requirements. It wasn't just for performance, handling, ride, noise, wear, fuel economy, ride, etc. It was because they received decent scores in all of the above.

I agree that the Michelins are superior in handling, and that's why I'm currently riding on them, but that's the rationale for Acura.

It would be nice to have more options at the time of purchase than the 2 OEM, but that's what we go, so we deal or swap them out.

I know you weren't saying they were good tires, I'm saying, of the two, I have been able to demonstrate that the Potenza performs better than the Eagle whose threshold to squeal is so low I cannot accept that it was the best overall tire for this car. Cheapest, sure. Best overall, no even the mediocre Potenza is better. That's all I'm saying.

Us auto enthusiasts require more performance for our cars. The Grand Touring Tires put on the Sport-Luxury TLX make it more of a comfortable car than a sporty one. The Pirelli P7's are just as grippy as the good-years and most MB/BMW owners love them. It's just the select few of us that should have a factory High Performance Tire Option like with the 3G TL.
