Automatic Transmission - At lower speeds

Have owned the 13'RDX for about 18 months now. Only have 6500 miles on it as dont get to drive it much. I have noticed that at lower speeds, especially when you are slowing down for a red signal, there is a sudden/abrupt down shift of the gears which make the ride rather jerky. I tried driving it in the manual mode and didnt feel the jerk at all.
This is what I feel is happening in the automatic versus the manual gear shifts I do, in automatic, when you start to slow down, the gear shifts from 3 to 2 to 1 and hence you feel the jerk. But when I am controlling it, it remains in 3 until I get to complete stop, at that point of time, it shifts it directly to 1.

Have anyone else noticed the jerky shifts at lower speeds or its just me. Does it need to be shown to the mechanic or would be improve if I drive the car more often and longer distances.

Thanks,
RDXed

Greetings! Since it's still under warranty go directly back to your dealer and have it checked out. Just my 2 cents. Good luck!

I can certainly feel the downshifts when slowing to a stop, but wouldn't call it jerky. It is more aggressive than any other car I have driven, but it doesn't annoy me. Are you in "D" or "S".

Hello, I am experiencing similar in my 2014 RDX AWD. Just wondering if the dealer resolved this for you?

Thx

I have a 2016 AWD with Tech Pkg and i also notice the downshift. It doesnt bother me much because its somewhat subtle. I have a Volvo and i dont notice the downshifts at all.

I have a 2016 Elite with AWD and I also notice the downshift.

It doesn't bother me as it is very smooth.

It could be normal since we have VCM and it shuts off cylinders for maximizing MPG

I have a 2015 AWD Tech with about 21,000 miles and have noticed this exact same jerky transmission behavior in stop-and-go highway driving. Certainly a disappointing level of performance. I plan on discussing it with my dealer during my next service visit, but based on other reports I've read, I believe this is going to be considered "normal" for the transmission.

This is the first thing I noticed when i purchased My RDX.Noticeable downshifting prior to stopping.I just had a 2017 RDX for a loaner and it works exactly the same. All automatic transmissions downshift when You stop.Acura is just more noticeable. If it doesn't downshift, then, You have something to worry about.lol.

I have a 2014 RDX Tech package with the aggressive and jerky downshift when coming to a stop. It has been somewhat annoying, but I am learning to use it to my benefit and not applying the brakes when turning corners and just time the downshift accordingly. Took it to the dealer on 2 occasions and was told it was normal. Had a 2017 RDX loaner which also did it but not as pronounced, but it was there.

I personally find it annoying since:

1. Any well designed and engineered transmission should not provide upshifts abrupt enough to make your head tilt forward.

2. I am coming off a Nissan CVT which was smoother than warm butter (and I might add uses a lot less parts and also does not require cylinder de-activation on up-shifts during semi-aggressive acceleration like the RDX)
