Suggest Some Turkey Frying Gear

So yet again I tell myself this will be the year I fry a turkey!

I need the gear to do this. Please recommend a fryer and whatever else is needed. What size bird is needed and how long to cook?

Get a rig for <100 at a Lowes or home despot.

About a 15# turkey works well
Need 3-5 gal of peanut oil based on size of pot
Some hints
Brine the turkey
Dunk in water in the pot to determine needed oil level (dry bird well)
Know the oil temp will drop 20-30F when you insert the bird
The bird will take 2-3 min to get fully in the oil if done correctly it is a slow process to avoid boilover.

Lots of good online tip sites to walk you through the process safely.

^Thanks for the tips.

I found this one on Amazon and ordered it. I can't wait.
I think I'm going to use it to make a low country boils too.

For those that have done this do you always use peanut oil? It seems the most popular but also pretty expensive.

Yup. It has a higher burn temp/smoke point than most other oils. and you can strain and reuse it 4-5 times if you use a good china cap or colander with coffee filters.

Just let it cool fully before putting it back in the plastic containers (Experience talking after I thought it was cool enough-nasty mess to clean and lesson learned)

I wasn't kidding about the fire extinguisher. It seems like every year some idiot burns his house down because he overfills the fryer with oil.

I picked up 3gal of a peanut/vegetable oil at Home Depot. $27. They didn't have pure peanut oil and I wasn't about to go driving around looking for it.
The fryer comes this Friday. I'll do a test run in a few weeks.

I've been watching plenty of Youtube vids so I'm pretty confident I can avoid a fire.

Just do this away from your home, like 20ft or so.

I fried a 12 pound Butterball on Saturday and it came out fabulous. I didn't add anything to the bird before frying it since the folks at Butterball already injected it with some kind of salt/water solution.

I used the below link for a gravy recipe and it came out great.
http://noblepig.com/2009/11/03/make-...ing-gravy.aspx

My next project will be a low country boil. This one looks good.

Congrats on the success with the rig. Pretty cheap rigs will do a nice job. Bet the meat was moist and amazing.

When you have the oil hot and the turkey is resting, contemplate sweet potato fries or chips, along with veggie chips.

I told my family I plan on frying a turkey this year.. Still may do it, but don't know if I have a good place to fry it except the end of our driveway.

I'm toying with the idea of getting one of those. Have you tried it yet?

Any cement is good (away from structures by 10-20 feet), just have plenty of cardboard for the surround (2-3 feet each side) to avoid the cement looking like you just changed your ATF

It'd still be my driveway.. my concrete in the backyard is way to close to the house.

this is my 5th year frying a turkey. it is a huge hit. put the turkey in the hot oil really slow. don't let the oil boil over or you will have a big problem. im using canola oil only because my nephew is allergic to peanuts. but the peanut oil is better.

Find a Injector kit. Its like a giant syringe. You can get different seasonings/flavors. Many places that sell the deep fryers sell them. I use one every time i deep fry.

It's almost turkey frying time again!
Does anyone have any suggestions for flavor injections?

I believe I used cajun butter last year bought from the grocery store. I also put cajun seasoning on the outside of the turkey. Everyone loved it, so hopefully I get to do the turkey again this year.

The only thing I'll do differently is fry a 2nd turkey as I only did 1 last year. The oil is already ready, and it doesn't take long at all so it's worth it. Plus everyone gets to take home more turkey.

I use cajun butter as suggested above that works out good. I also have used soy sauce. That works out pretty damn awesome. My sister laughed me out when she saw me injecting turkeys with soy sauce but she ate her foot and then a whole turkey breast after she saw how good it was. I usually puree a bunch of seasonings, fresh herbs, and veggies in butter and inject the turkeys with that too. Works pretty good as well. I always season the turkeys with seasoned salt and garlic on the outside so the skin has a good flavor. I also chop fresh garlic cloves and onion and place about two chunks of each in each major part of the turkey. So two chunks of each in each wing, each drum, each thigh, and each breast. The flavors leech into the meat during cooking. Its amazing.

Where you guys getting your peanut oil from? Saw some pure peanut oil at Walmart for $15/gal. Way too expensive for me. So I went and bought the 3 gal peanut/soybean oil for $23 which is also at Walmart. How long are you guys cooking the turkey for? I did 3.5 minutes per pound last year and it came out kinda crispy. Might do 3 minutes a pound this time around.
Keep your fire extinguisher near by, be safe guys.

I almost bought that same peanut/soybean mix and then I saw in the next isle that they had 3gal pure peanut for $34 so I got that. $23 is a great deal for the mix. Home Depot sells the mix for $28. Don't know if I'll notice any difference using pure but I wanted to give it a shot.

I've had success with 3.5 mins per pound and try to keep the temp at 350.

I used the Butterball Buttery Creole kit on my xmas fried turkey and all I can say is
I used half the contents on a 16 pound turkey. My guests all loved it too. This is the first turkey I ate that I didn't even want gravy on it.

Getting
Picked up 3 gal of peanut oil at Walmart and I got the Buttery Creol seasoning ready to go.

Anyone else frying this year?

I saw those indoor Butterball fryers in Walmart too. One year I'm going to try that.
