Sunbeam Tiger thoughts?

My dad just picked one up. THe car is mint and straight as an arrow w/ brand new paint and interior. Plans are to drop in a crate 302 w/ a T5. I'll post pics up later.

I just wanted to get some thoughts on the car. I'm a little bummed he got it cause all he had been talking about was doing our mini cooper project. I'll be stoked on this but I don't know to much about these things.

The crate 302 we are looking at is a 245 HP motor which should be fun in a 2,500lb car

I don't think anyone else on this board knows what a sunbeam is

I think it'll be a neat car and fun to drive, but I can't say I'm a fan of the body style.

You should get your pops to sell the sunbeam and get FFR cobra replica to put that crate motor in.

there are lots of mods available for the 5.0 for great prices. You could turn that thing into a real beast with a few grand!!

I do too.

Sweet car.

A bit of a tangent, but when I think Sunbeam Tiger, I also think Datsun 1600. My friends in high school used to rebuild Datsun 510s and also owned a 1600. Another cool 60s roadster.

Great car back in the 1960's and still nice car for the present. I remember seeing a few of them when I was in HS. Aren't they worth a lot of $$s? I seem to remember one selling for around $100k at a Barrett-Jackson Auction that was in mint original condition.

the MK2's were worth alot, but I don't think anywhere close 100K. We paid 22K for this one.

here are the pics, he's got a full side shot I need to get so I can do some photoshopping w/ some wheels. I think we are gonna go w/ the mini lites, but I want him to do a powdercoated center I'm also trying to talk him out of doing the little chrome pinstripe down the side.

Okay, just to give you guys some updates. We finally let my mom know about the purchase (However she thinks it was a $5K car ). And we've decided to just go ALL out. Gonna do a frame off and throw the thing on a rotisssery. We've found the motor, it's going to be a crate 302 w/ around 350HP (cars are laying that down to the wheels) and we have the 5 speed in the garage already.

We are also gonna strip and dip the body and come back and paint it BRG.

Can anyone do some photo shopping of BRG w/ some mini lites?

w/ this power and weight it'll be an 11 second car w/ no traction

Hmmm -- maybe you should install a multi point seat belt, and upgrade the windshield to safety glass while you're at it.

Realize I never updated this...he went a different route and did a full concours resto. From the little exposure it's gotten to other tiger guys, may be the nicest in existence.

The Tigers are wonderful-looking cars with great drive trains, stock or otherwise.

Saw several of them in SCCA autocrosses in Pleasanton in the early '80s and always wondered how they handled stock. The Tigers at the SCCA events all had been modded, to differing degrees, ending up classed with 'Vettes or Cobras.

Before picking up the '66 Mustang that I had for too long (but never finished restoring, sadly sold it last year), I was actively looking for a Sunbeam Tiger, but couldn't find one worth restoring at the time....The thoughts of dropping a 302 or 351W in it...
