Just like poor people tend to eat less healthily because chips and soda are cheaper than fruits and vegetables. Next up: more wealth redistribution so the po' folks can get new Mercs in the name of safety.

Take a look at any beat up car sitting in a parking lot and you'll see they are probably driving on Bologna skins. When it takes an extra distance to stop or if the tire rolls over like a stretch armstrong in a corner, chances are your accidents are going to be more severe.
Not to mention when they do buy tires, they go to the local "discount tires" shop and buy the 4 tire mounted and balanced special(i.e. used) for $100.00. I had an Isuzu SUV with Goodyear integrity tires on it that were so bad, that dew made them behave as if you were on sheet ice. I replaced them at 8k miles. I'll bet the tire shop sold them to some other sucker.

that article makes no sense, there are so many factors in accidents while driving i.e. cell phone use, not knowing how to properly drive, being distracted. I hear more and more stories where some person was updating their status or texting and would up road kill.

I think the article makes perfect sense but it ignores the possibility of what would happen if a poor person were to drive a Merc and how much that person's survivability would increase. Then again, as a Stats prof said to me in undergrad, "stats can be made to say anything."

As in all sociological studies/observational studies...you can have some associations but hard to count for true causation and you should also look at more variables as well as you suggested.
But this certainly gives some insight into some differences there and they can further study and put in variables to see what else may be causing the fatality difference.

While some scientists like to cherry pick and fudge data, it's still useful to look at some possible associations between income/education and traffic fatality...which is ceratinly a novel and interesting idea.
But sure there can be further studies for other researchers to build upon this...and look at other psosible confounding factors, as you suggested, to see if other things are truly driving the difference between fatalities.
It makes sense to me thogh. I remember hearing in the local news about a single mom and her 3 kids who had her car break down in middle of a highway and a tractor trailer ran into them and killed all 4. It's likely she was poor and the car was not in proper maintained shape and broke down.

Not enough factors considered to say it's just the car they're driving

Of course rich people get better cars that are safer and have more features. It's common sense.
That being said, maybe the rich people that went to college were taught not to use their phones while driving, or they have bluetooth to make it safe...
As previously stated, it's a BS article with too many factors. I thought that the BSing articles and essays stopped with college though, I guess not!
