Worked on the electrical & interior this week. Got the main power bus installed from the trunk mounted battery to the starter solenoid & the main distribution block.
As part of the console added a kill switch for the cars electrical system. It the red switch between the seats. When it off you can pull the red toggle out.
Built the aluminum sheet metal lower console for the radio, some pulls, warning lights & toggle switches. Waiting on 2 toggles & 1 warning light to finish it off.
Got foam padding & leather covering at a local fabric outlet & used that to cover the whole unit right to the rear cockpit wall. With power up front I can start to hook up the various ECU’s that control the engine. Slow meticulous work trying to find the right wire to graft out of large cable bundles.

That's the one my son in law wants to build. Same basic chassis with some additional framework for the roof, so he figures I will be helping him out
Cool thing about the meatballs & sponsor decals, they are static cling pieces so you can put them on or take them off when you want. Mine is "45"

Cockpit floor riveted & bonded in. Started to fit the base insulation layer. Two aluminum faces with a plastic airspace core. Product is called Reflectix & is used as an attic insulation stapled to the roof trusses.
Will glue it down tomorrow.
Need to take a break from the Cobra to rebuild the A/C unit in the Xterra. After 12 years its still holding its initial gas charge but the compressor clutch has died. Installing a new Compressor W/clutch, Accumulator/Dryer, Expansion valve & orifice tube.

You sit alongside the transmission & your legs are next to the engine block so heat protection is more important than sound reduction. You can see the last two header tubes alongside the foot box if you look just below the clutch quadrant in the picture.
Besides side pipes with no windows or top do not play well with creating a quite car.

Thanks for the kind words. Got the lower console finished & need to wire that up to where the under door speakers go. Rest is self contained in the box & the big pile of blue orange & yellow wires at the far left marked "heat" will drop down into the console & plug in.

Honestly, like with anything...when you're elbow deep in it, it feels intuitive and logical and probably somewhat therapeutic, but from the outside, it's really impressive, overwhelming and awe inspiring. Seriously...
You'd have someone see it assembled and be like, oh cool...kit car you built...how hard can it possibly be?
VERY!

Multi-tasking this week. Boring stuff so I like to change off. Installing first of 3 computers & major harness, engine cooling & interior heating.
Computers black plastic face is covered with the heat shield material. The other side has a heat sink on it.

No all black is nice. Main goal was chafe protection for all the lines.
I was playing with red fuel, blue water, X for vacuum/air & black for wires. Top of the engine is covered when in use so between the body position & the engine cover I don't think you will see much of the covering.

Getting to the hard part but closer to the phase 1 finish. Should have a running car this month. Definite Maybe
Main ECU is heat shielded & installed. Engine leads roughed out.
The black box is called the Black Box its a small computer that drives the peripherals, fan, fuel pump, various sensors, instruments etc. The black shape to its right is the heater core & distribution points.
The rest of the snake pit attaches to various engine sensors, alternator, starter etc.
Once the lines are roughed out will neaten them up & clamp them in place.
Then its engine cooling, radiator, hoses, overflow tank & coolent. Finally put some oil in under pressure to pre-lube the engine.

Its something you always do on a fresh engine. In the bad old days you pulled the distributor. The bottom has a tang that fits into a slot on the oil pump drive shaft. We has a shaft like tool the fit the distributer hole & had a tang to engage the oil pump drive. Pour in your oil, hook a high speed drill to the tools shaft & watch your oil gauge for pressure.
Today with distributor less engines you can use a small pressure tank or even a yard pump-up spray tank. Attach a NPT fitting that will screw into the oil pressure bung on the block to the tanks hose. Fill the oil pan less one quart. Put the quart into your pressure vessel then turn on your compressor or pump the handle Oil will be forced throughout the system.

Main reason is to be sure the engine does not have to spin up dry before it gets oil into the bearing & wear surfaces. Fittings/sensor leaks will also show up. In the old days a bad pump, pickup would show but not today.
