Canyon runs in SoCal

So had an afternoon to myself in San Diego for work. Found a nice route in Hwy 78 in Escondido an hour north. Had a bunch of fun. Avis had a special for $100 for a daily convertible. The Mustang V6 turbo in track mode was surprisingly pretty good. I guess it's the base engine with performance package?

anyway the views and the twisties were a ton of fun. Also swung by Point Loma, etc

It was either a V6 or a turbo 4. They don't make a V6 turbo.

Oh wow. It was pretty torquey with very apparent turbo whine, so I assumed V6 turbo not V8. But yeah, it was a 2.3L ecoboost 4 pot

If you ever have time to come to LA area, Let me know. I run a canyon run group called Socal Lateral G. We are pretty much regulars in the canyons haha

This is from last month when it snowed a lot in Angeles Crest Highway.

I'm in SoCal right now (in SD) but I don't think my rental will do well for Canyon runs...it's a Yukon XL.

I did ride around in a Nogaro blue B5 S4 yesterday though.

FYI - it is Rt. 78 from Escondido eastward to Julian. Another nice drive (more scenic and less twisty), is Dios Highway westward from Escondido, with lake views. I found this out on a Lotus forum.

I grew up in the Valley Center / Escondido area and I'm well familiar with the back roads near Julian.

Good stuff!

Love the pics. I'd be happy just to drive the 1 north-to-south.

Funny you mention that.... Just read this today.
I love this drive... It's so damn beautiful.

The California Rains Have Ruined America's Favorite Road Trip

There's one road trip everyone should take in their lifetime: A drive from San Francisco to Los Angeles along Highway 1. One of the prettiest parts of the journey starts in Carmel in the north and ends in Cambria in the south. You pass through Big Sur and go along mile after mile of gorgeous coastline for hours. It's truly wonderful.

But the recent rains in California have ruined any chance of completing that trip for the foreseeable future.

The coast road is now closed between Palo Colorado in Monterey County and Ragged Point in San Luis Obispo County. This is, arguably, the best stretch of road on the entire trip. The reason is that the Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge (above) is cracked and no longer safe. It needs to be totally replaced and will take at least six months to fix. Also, a lot of the area right after that bridge is where hotels and restaurants are for Big Sur, which means they will surely take a substantial economic hit now that travelers can't get to them as easily.

The closed stretch of Highway 1 highlighted in blue.
Screenshot via Google MapsWhile you can still drive on Route 1 north and south of the closure, you won't be making a full road trip out of it. The closures are not placed near another road that will allow you to go east towards the 101. You'd literally have to get to the closure, turn around, and drive back the way you came. And it also appears, from the screenshot of the stretch that's closed above, that you might not be able to get to the famous Bixby Bridge. If you have a lot of time, that's fine. But if you want to just drive and enjoy the surroundings, you're SOL.

Damn.

I'll be going down there twice in 2 weeks. This will be their first Audi, so they want to spend some good time on it. Will be documenting everything.

It'd be something like 50whp/50wtq according to other base tunes. Nothing compare to your Audi!! hahaha

But yeah, I'll text you in advance. Let's get something to eat together if you are down!

JS do you guys ever get pulled over or run into issues with police on your canyon runs? I used to do canyon runs on street bikes when I was younger and I remember our whole group (15 bikers) got pulled over at gunpoint on Angeles Crest.

One of the guys I rode with was an LA County Sheriff though and he had a "discussion" with the guy who pulled us over.

I've personally done literally 86000 ACH canyon cruises since I'm like 15 mins away from that canyon. I'm in Pasadena area. I've probably spotted chp less than 10 times. I usually go very early in the morning like 7am or very late around 9pm. Cops don't go up those times. They usually go up to catch someone in the afternoon on weekends.

There are some spots where chps usually camp out, so you just have to drive reasonably around those spots. They don't go over 4k ft above from the ground usually, so just have to be careful in the first 5-10 miles. I've never got pulled over. And I don't drive slow.

Last Sunday when we went up, two members out of 80 cars got pulled over for a no license plate ticket. We went around 3pm to catch the sunset.

I would say the chance of getting a ticket in the canyon is much lower than getting it on the freeway!

Hey Aaron, do you organize your canyon runs on Facebook? I brought my MINI out of storage last week to begin getting it prepped for summer so I may be up for some canyon activities soon enough. Dealing with a blown Bilstein strut and a pesky EVAP leak currently

haha we do the cruises a lot so it's not too hard. our usual weekend morning cruises are usually less than 20 people. 7AM meet up.

I used to love peg dragging SR 166 to Santa Maria way more than the crest. N2 around Sandberg is a fun ride too.
