Nikon DX? Camera is a D3200. It's our first DSLR. Got it in January and have only used it a handful of times. Lots of learning.

Was the lens 55-200mm?
One thing to keep in mind with d/slrs. Your shutter speed should be equal to and in best case for wildlife double, the focal ly length of the lens you are shooting.
So if it was the 55-200, and the cropped factory of the camera, your shutter speed should be at 1/300th of a second. But would be best at 1/500th of second.
The exposure triangle of ISO/aperture and shutter will help younger the proper exposure.
Now if you don't understand this, get Bryan Peterson's book Understanding Exposure, I think its fourth edition. Less than $20 from Amazon.
Also a great tool, is camerasim.com, they have an app for iPad as well. It will show you what happens if you don't select correct shutter and/or ISO and aperture.

What's strange to me is your birds in flight shots look relatively well focused and therefore relatively sharp. In comparison: Your perched bird shots are fairly soft as far as focus/stability is concerned. Usually the opposite is what happens.

Probably mostly a product of cropping. The one on the wire had the sun behind the bird, so the lighting was difficult to work with. The one in the tree had an out of focus branch just in front, bottom left, so I cropped that out. Both are zoomed in and cropped considerably while the two in flight only needed minimal cropping.

Last month I picked up a Canon 7D Mark II to go along with the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II I purchased back in January.
Due to work and weather, I haven't been able to get out and really try it out, but based on these shots I took through the kitchen window,
I think I'm going to love the combo!

Really like the D500, it's the Nikon body I've been waiting four years to get. D800e will soon be gone.
Yes, still plenty of activity, a lot of of juvi's are around, more than I ever seen up there. Though, I'm thinking once the 80 and 90's hit this weekend, they may go north.

This was the Fuji100-400mm on XT-1 handheld at 810mm equivalent with 1.4x @ 1/350 at about 25 feet.
