I'm glad you re-posted the cranes - I missed them the first time. They're lovely.
I'm also glad to see so many closet nature photographers around here!

This thread immediately reminded me of my attempts at getting a decent shot of a pair of hummingbirds last summer. Must have taken about 100 shots and this was the best I could manage. This was taken at 250mm with my soft 55-250. Tough to get those buggers to stay still. Any tips would be appreciated as I may get another crack at them this year.

Honestly, dom, that's one of the things I love about many hummingbird photos - the blurred wings. They're so fricking impressive and that motion is part of what they are.
I think getting a sharp photo of the head, body, feet, and tail - as you did - makes for a good photo, honestly. Not that I haven't seen excellent photos with high enough shutter speeds to freeze the wings, too, but I don't think it's necessary for a technically good photo.
You may find a monopod helpful to support the lens and camera while you track. The bird is a tad dark, though. What were your ISO and shutter speed here?

Awesome! We had a family of wild turkeys living on and around our property when we moved in, but they were all killed by hunters this fall/winter.

Too bad about your turkeys. I guess this one feels pretty secure here. No hunting in the neighborhood. She just saunters across the yard from time to time...so funny to watch.

I'm torn between all those lenses. No way I can afford that one. Either the f/4 IS or f/2.8 non IS. Canon has refurbed ones for under $1k.
I used my old tele outdoors, I don't recall ever needing the smaller aperture. Hell, I don't even know if I need IS.

I think with that telephoto IS is pretty important. And you can afford it, Best buy does zero interest financing for 18 MO that's how I bought mine. So there's no excuses

My 70-200 is non-IS. I do think it's nice in some situations, primarily lower-light portraits or landscapes without a tripod - both situations when you might need a slower shutter speed, but your subject isn't moving much.
For birds or moving wildlife, the IS isn't necessary, IMO. If your shutter speed is high enough to freeze the subject's motion, then it should then also be fast enough to freeze any minor camera movement.

For the recent batch (the Turkey..i have others that i didn't post in this thread)I used the Sigma 150-500 4.5/6.3 OS. "The Bigmos" lol. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...6_3_DG_OS.html
Sometimes I'll use the 70-300L (Like the ones above the Turkey) because its SO nice of a size.

Got to spend about an hour watching a family of fox in the yard next to my house last night. Saw the kits play around then mom nurse most of them. After a while she finally noticed me and started to charge coming to within 50 feet of me before backing off.
Lighting was pretty bad as it was around 7PM and raining. Most shots were handheld at 400mm and ISO's ranged from 1250-2500.

This shot isn't the best because i wasn't on a tripod and tried to take it really fast. I also wish I had like a 400mm lens because I really had to crop this shot . but I thought it was kinda cool with the bald eagle screaming at the crow.

Thanks.
You better do it quick because if they are anything like these birds, then they will learn to fly really soon. I was shocked when it flew out of the nest.
