the bottom unscrews and there are three legs which are mounted in the part which comes off. You fold them out, and screw the bottom back on. Voila, a self supporting monopod. It will hold up my 1D with the 70-200 on it.

Wide can be very cool, especially for landscapes. I've also used mine for indoor shots in confined spaces.

The other thing you might want to look into is a macro lens.

Yes, I've also been eying the EF-S 60 f2.8 macro. It sounds really good in the IQ dept. It's just mighty similar to my 50 1.4's focal range. but that lens doesn't have macro capability.

Does anyone else think posting your camera/lenses is totally boring?
If we all had unlimited money, we'd all have L lenses and the best bodies. That's not interesting.

I'm more interested in accessories. What do you always carry with you?
What do you find useful? If all your stuff got stolen, what would you buy first?
What would you buy before you even went out on your first shoot?

If I had to start over, I would start with:

Canon 10-22mm lens w/ UV filter (lens used ~ 60% of the time)

The rest of my stuff I don't use all that much, to be honest. (I need to get/practice using filters)
The pod barely makes the list, but it's cheap, and quite useful when I need it. (and I always keep it with me)

The only filter I find of much use is the circular polarizer - I might use some neutral density gradient filters if I shot high dynamic range landscapes. Other filters.... well, that's what Photoshop is for.

If my entire kit were stolen, I'd buy the D200 and the 17-55 DX, plus the SB800 again. Second lens to buy again would be the 70-200mm VR.

if my kit was stolen, i'd buy the 1d markII, and the 70-200f/2.8 NON-IS.
next would be the monopod/ball head combo.
I'd also have 2 mem cards and 2 batts like i do now.
edit, and a circular polarizer.

If anyone is looking for a really nice lightweight shoulder bag, check out the Crumpler "5 Million Dollar Home". I just grabbed one a couple weeks ago and it's perfect for what I need on a casual outing.

There's just enough room for my 30D with the 10-22 mounted and either my 24-70 f/2.8 or 70-200 f/4 and my 430EX in the other two compartments. There's also ample room for batteries, filters, and cleaning equipment. Best of all, it doesn't look like a camera bag.

I'll use my backpack for hikes, but this shoulder bag is ideal for day trips and quick outings.

I havent shot with a macro lens at all so I dont know anything about them and what affect that will have. I know it is definitly something I want to add to my bag for car photography. I will probably get it once summer comes back around. I am basically between the 105mm VR and the 60mm one. I kinda like the added distance the the 105 will give you but the 60mm can be had for about half the price some places. I have read many reviews on the 105 and it is supposed to be a pretty good lens but they reviews never make it sound fantastic.

I shoot mainly landscapes and nature. Looking at getting a Nikon D2XS to replace my D100 but nothing I've seen yet beats a medium format enlargement or medium format slide projected on a screen. I have a Nikon 9000 Coolscan scanner and the latest Photoshop CS2 but film has a different quality than digital. More 3D than digital IMO. The Hasselblad XPan is an amazing panoramic rangefinder. The lenses are just magnificent.
