I was playing around a bit today with off camera flash. I placed one flash (Sigma 500 Super) off to the right with a diffuser on it pointed directly at where my girl was 'supposed' to be. The other flash was on-camera (A Metz 54AF-1). The Sigma was in slave mode and set to full-power. I bounced the Metz off the ceiling because I wanted most of the light from the side.

The look is a little un-natural - I would prefer a bit less harsh shadowing, but I learned a bit. It is definitely challenging to get a 18 month old to play in one spot... All I know is if my subject was the wall I had my focus bang on...

Nice skin tones and beautiful model

The shadow behind her is distracting. Another fill behind/left of her or have her further away from the background might help.

I agree... The shadows in her face are too much, IMO.

Yeah, I should have balanced the power between the 2 flashes. Callie has striking blue eyes and they just don't come through in the first shot.

The other thing is that the veins in her forehead make her skin look almost transparent in these shots. Not sure why. I hope the poor girl grows some hair on her head and doesn't have the mullet much longer.

Thanks for the comments.

The blocks work out to be a great way to get Callie to sit still.

So I made a DIY grid spot out of cardboard. It isnt great and it is really hard to aim properly. All in all, I kinda like the effect.

And yes, she has a big shiner on the forehead. She fell at daycare - the little trooper is going to have a helluva bruise.

Right.... That's what they all say.

I like the effect, too. She just looks a tad blue - aside from the black and blue.

Playing with shutter speed

This was taken on an escalator parallel to the guy standing still, so we were at the same(ish) speed - causing the effect of everything being blurred except the subject.

This one was an accident, as the tripod was set to look towards the windshield, but fell before the timer ran out and took the pic.

An experiment in many ways here. I used the xsi's "custom white balance" function for the first time. I also did in-camera exposure compensation. The lighting was a halogen floor-lamp since my 430exii won't be delivered until tomorrow. Background is inkjet paper on a fold table - no lightbox or anything like that. Some PP in LR2. I think it came out well.

A little more experimentation. I took this some time ago, but didn't quite know what to do with it as it didn't turn out how I wanted.
It's an experiment in 2nd curtain flash, as well as some futzing with LR.

This is an experiment with some off-camera flash along with a DIY snoot. My face is lit by the snooted flash at 1/16th power. I have a flash placed behind me at 1/8 power. Just messing around and trying to learn some of the tricks. Not sure where the blue flare came from...

trying out some strobing and using an umbrella to spread some light, kind of failed since some wind was out and almost knocked over the umbrella.

More experiments... I setup a rubbermaid tote up as a lightbox. A simple piece of paper serves as the background. It worked better than expected. With a little more playing around it might give some good results...

Here is a pic of the setup.

In this shot I placed the tote upsidedown with the flash inside pointing up. I placed the glass directly on top. Flash was set to 1/64th power. Again - this shot isn't interesting, but I will use the technique again.

Something about that lens pic doesn't look right to me - it's lacking contrast?

Dunno if it is a factor, but the lens I used to take the picture is my worst lens in my arsenal (old Rebel film kit lens).

I actually really had to struggle to get things dark enough for a decent shot.

I am no pro, but I think the lens is great... My only beef is the noise - it is not the right lens for say a wedding photographer. Sometimes it hunts for focus, but I have that problem with most of my lenses so I blame it on me.

I just got a 11-18 Tamron to add to the mix . The 11-18 is being replaced with a 10-24 by Tamron but I couldnt beat the price on this deal. My bro-in-law works for a distributor and he gets me great deals.

Nice i know ive been hearing great things about the 10-24 i actually saw it in person. Nikon glasses are sharp but some are overrate for certain users.

their 14-24 i wouldn't even go near it since you can't put a filter on it.
* thats like a 1400 lens disaster waiting to happen.

agreed, I really like it too. When i bought my XTI, I only got the body, so i got that lens to function as the go-to walking around lens. I have that and a nifty fifty.

How's the 11-18? any sample pics?

Just got back from a walk, I took the camera to try out the new lens. At the widest setting it has a lot of CA in the top left corner. I just took some random quick shots. Have a look... More in my flickr

I finally used the Kenko extention tubes for some macro attempts. I started with the 12mm on the 70-200 and then swapped for the 24mm tube. I should have tried the 36mm tube for some better close ups. Focus range was very thin, but it was still fun.

Thanks guys. I was actually a few weeks late. When I went skydiving in this area last year in early March, it was lush green with all kinds of wildflowers. This year I went in mid-April and it was mostly brown with very few flowers. These were actually taken on the side of the road.

I went to the NHRA race at Joliet yesterday and decided to mess around a bit during the evening session. Here's a top fuel launch with a deliberately slow shutter speed (1/3 second). You can make out the individual cylinder firings on the car in the far lane.

I got to play around with a 90mm macro lens on the weekend. With such a small DOF they are a lot harder to work with than I expected. Just by mistake I stumbled on the idea of smoke trails from a stick.

This was one of the results. Shot handheld 1/60@f11 ISO800. A remote triggered flash (1/4 power) was placed high right pointed down at the stick point.

I have been following the strobist blog and have joined in the current Bootcamp. It completing my assignment I let my baby girl in on the action and let her take a dozen shots... I loved this one. I got a real 'deer in headlights' look in my eyes, but she is clearly enjoying herself.
