BUT
you need to look at the new mobile apps and how they interact with the computers versions...which is where my research will be towards.
And you can't use the apps without the stupid CC.

My guess is that they are going to stop offering LR as a standalone product in the next release. Just a hunch. So even if you buy the standard upgrade now, doesn't mean you'll be able to do so in the future.

You are correct sir, I had my pricings mixed up. That being said, $120 a year for someone that does use PS and LR is a decent deal then (not a steal as I originally stated). However, if you only need LR, it's not a great deal, unless the mobile side of things is that enticing. I haven't used the mobile app and don't know if I will. I currently only edit on my machine at home and don't think I need to edit on my iPad unless I'm away from home for extended periods of time.

I rarely if ever use photoshop....but ideas like the new photoshop app...that lets you use your iPad in somewhat cintiq-ish ways is appealing.

Seems like Correl or Topaz will be in my future if LR becomes extinct as a stand alone. I'm not going to be FORCED into another monthly bill.

Can't see Lightroom going away as a stand alone.

adobe has stated that it will keep it stand alone...but for how long is the question.
#251
They saw a lot of basklash when they started CC, so much that they had to make a photographers bundle. Can't see them stopping LR as stand alone.

I hope so. I have to research the LR app to see if would even do things I would actually use.
If no...then I stick with the stand alone.

I shoot people
I have a question/need help on something, but I'm not sure exactly how to word it...so I'll try my best to explain...
every time I upload photos to Lightroom to do any kind of work, it automatically saves the RAW files to my computer, and since I shoot RAW 95% of the time, this tend to fill up my storage fast.... Every month or so, I have to either delete those RAW files OR move them manually to an external hard drive... My question is... is there any way I can make it either NOT save any RAW files at all? OR perhaps divert the saving directly to an external hard drive? I've looked into the settings and preference tabs and don't see anything to do this.

I use external hard drives for all images - they are fairly affordable these days it's not like back when it used to be an issue. I mean you can get a nice 3TB drive for around $100 - I use this one: http://amzn.to/1oENeBe

Yea, save them to an external and keep them in their original location when you import to LR. And with LR5 you can edit via the smart previews even if the external drive isn't connected.

That's a cool looking enclosure. But it doesn't work for me since I want redundancy.

if it didn't save your image files to your hard drive, you wouldn't be able to work on the images!

So, where in the settings do I make this happen?

I guess I kinda knew that, because when I need to make room, I delete those files and when I go back to them, Lightroom says it can't be found or whatever, but I guess my question was about how divert it to an external hard drive rather the computer's hard drive, like what Mizouse is suggesting.
So, where in the settings do I make this happen?

oh also choosing DNG will save you some space in the long run, and also reduce headaches if you are working with different file formats like Sony's proprietary ARW and things like that - it standardizes your files. I mostly only do DNG. But this also takes longer to import since it has to convert each file.

What kind of headache? I have no issue switching between canon raw and Sony raw.

if you're not using DNG I'm not going to try convincing you.

what I mean is, this is personal preference. do it however you like to.
Regarding the "headaches", I don't have a ARW viewer in Windows, so I can't open those files if I just wanted to look in the file browser. Same goes for couple other formats. So if I convert them all to DNG, I don't have that issue.

I convert everything to DNG during import.
Its a more widely recognized standard that is less likely to get outdated/go away as RAW compatibility changes over the years.

Thanks guys for the suggestions above.
So, at Costco (Canadian Costco that is... so, "Canadian Pricing"), they have a WD 4TB external hard drive for $220 that's wifi/cloud enabled, and a regular WD 4TB for $169...anyone know much about these wifi/cloud models? Is it worth it? Or just get the regular ones?
