Lightroom 5 beta Now Available!

Posted by Sharad Mangalick on Apr 15, 2013

We’ve been working hard on the next version of Lightroom, and now we’re giving our customers a chance to try out some of the new technology available with the release of Lightroom 5 beta. Since the initial Lightroom public beta release in 2006, we’ve learned a tremendous amount through a collaborative dialogue with our customers, and I’m excited to continue that collaboration to receive feedback on the Lightroom 5 beta.

With this release, our goal was to add some highly-desired features that allow photographers to quickly process and enhance their images. We’ve added more robust healing options, the ability to create off-center vignettes, and a one-click auto perspective correction tool. We’ve also added the ability to edit photos when not connected to your original images. Each of these improvements is a result of feedback provided by the Lightroom community. Thank you.

There are a lot of new features in the Lightroom 5 beta. Here’s a brief description of some of our favorites:

Advanced Healing Brush: Enhancements to the Spot Removal tool allow you to heal or clone using brush strokes. A new “Visualize Spots” tool highlights sensor dust spots for easy removal.

<object width="853" height="480"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/s2xNLS0KjcY?hl=en_US&amp;version=3"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/s2xNLS0KjcY?hl=en_US&amp;version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="853" height="480" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

Radial Filter: Apply any of Lightroom’s local adjustment attributes to a circular mask. The area of the mask can be resized, feathered or even inverted to give you maximum control over the focus of your images.

<object width="853" height="480"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ewx5xwLdhX0?version=3&amp;hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ewx5xwLdhX0?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="853" height="480" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

Upright: Automatically level horizons, straighten buildings, and correct other askew lines.

<object width="853" height="480"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/x4-V2hLgf7Q?version=3&amp;hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/x4-V2hLgf7Q?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="853" height="480" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

Smart Preview: Lightroom allows you to edit offline images by storing a smaller version of the original image, called a smart preview. Edits made to the smart preview will automatically apply to the original once reconnected to Lightroom.

Downloaded it and got it running in no time. I like some of the interface updates. The videos above were enough to get me starting using the new features.

I did a quick test with an image I had been struggling with and I liked the results: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ep_jhu/8653988618

Is the beta download running along side of your LR4? Or, has it taken the place of your copy of 4?

Anyone know when 5 will be finished and available?

It's running alongside the LR4 installation on its own catalog. As a matter of fact, the beta will not upgrade your LR4.

Ryan Brenizer just posted this before/after on his FB.... all he did was click "Auto Upright" button. ok, I'm excited to see what it will do with architectural photos. This is stuff I'd usually do manually using the sliders - quite time consuming. Sometimes I would put it in ShiftN but many times that program doesn't do it right.

https://www.facebook.com/ryanbrenizer
OK, the Lightroom auto-straighten is finally one magic Adobe tool that works at least as well as advertised. T and I were in the Musée d'Orsay (officiel) and wanted to get a silhouette, so we set up my OM-D and had a random tourist take it. You can't really expect them to get perfect perspective. The ONLY edit between the top and bottom photo is clicking the "auto upright" button."

Yeah check out the link I posted in my post above... I've done a few other tests with great results. BUT on a couple of non-archi photos, LR5 has told me it can't find any leveling adjustments - including one ocean photo where all there is is a f'ing horizon! Hmm...

oh I see the original now. nice.

also the way I understood it, I think it's purpose is for verticals, I didn't see anywhere that it would straighten a horizon. Generally speaking, a horizon is pretty easy to fix, whereas the kind of vertical correction it is doing is complex. Maybe that is why.

I guess being a silhouette that correction works but it made the couple "wider" (thus fatter?) lol

lol good point. If I was doing it myself I would have slimmed the image to compensate for that.

Rubin, you should just change the title to "Adobe: Lightroom Discussion" thread (take out the "4")... anyway...

the automatic straightening tool is pretty awesome for interior architectural (real estate) stuff... A friend of mine works for a company that does renovations and asked me to do some before and after photos

Color fixes aside, that is quite a transformation.

Does it auto-crop the pic? Or did you do that?

There's a 'constrain to crop' option which I used, but I further adjusted it.
I don't think it's as dramatic as the other example I posted before (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ep_jhu/8653988618)

That appears to do more than just a simple crop. There seems to be photo manipulation based on scale, 3D environment, and other tools (distort) found in the transformation part of photoshop.

Its an interesting and highly effective auto tool in the new LR. I dig it.

With these new tools, I think I'll be staying in Lightroom more than Photoshop.

Sometimes it's not even about framing it straight (2 of my cameras have a leveler on both the LCD/live view screen AND the viewfinder), but oftentimes there's lens distortion. Take the bathroom shot above for example, it was pretty leveled but because it was 10mm (APS-C), notice the curve on the door? There's still a little curve after the auto correct button, but definitely a lot less. I could have probably done a little more correcting in manual but I wanted to show what the auto correction can do

Thanks! I actually hadn't thought of lens distortion throwing off how level things are. Makes sense, but I notice even photos out of my 24-105 are not level, so I that says something haha I'll have to post a picture I recently took, it was not level at all and I had to keep adjusting it to finally make it look right.

I'll post my before and after and then if I can DL the LR5 beta, I will post the results of their auto-straighten tool. If not, would one of you be so kind to do it for me?

I pay $20/mo for PS CS6 (only). Less than $300/year... I'm ok with that. Although I'm seriously using PS a lot less with LR5 in the mix.

Is it the end of tilt shift lenses (I know, overly dramatic) or do they have other advantages beyond perspective correction?

IMO, "no way". Because corrections in Lightroom or Photoshop are only a way of simulating the effect - when you use those tools you are losing some IQ, visible or not. So if you want the maximum quality possible from a shot like that, you must use a tilt-shift lens. And for that reason, I will love to get one in the future and know that it will help take my work to the next level.

GLARING bug in LR5! I actually noticed this with one of the most prominent club photogs around, when his pix from a certain event looked noisy as FAWK!!! and I was wondering WTF was going on.

http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjour...ot-issues.html
Lightroom 5 Hot Issues

The team would like to provide an update on several issues discovered since Sunday night’s launch. Thanks for your patience while we investigated and compiled this list.

Noise Reduction and Sharpening Not Visible on export
As mentioned here, a bug was introduced in Lightroom 5.0 where files exported at less than 1/3 of their original size may not retain Output Sharpening and Noise Reduction settings. We are working on a solution and will include it in our next update.

Incorrect photos selected when working with Publish Services
When working in a Publish collection, it is sometimes possible for the grid view to indicate that certain photos are selected, while the filmstrip indicates that different photos are selected. In this case, the filmstrip is actually correct, and any actions that are performed will be performed on the photos that are selected in the filmstrip. If you are concerned about this bug, make sure that you have the filmstrip showing while you’re working in a Publish collection, so that you know for sure what photos are selected. We are working on a fix and hope to include in a future update.

Presets Disappearing when Upgrading Catalog to Lr5
As reported here, user created presets were not migrated to Lightroom 5 with a catalog upgrade. This only occurs when the “Store Presets with Catalog” preference is checked (enabled). Within Lightroom 5, the “Store Presets with Catalog” preference will be unchecked (disabled). Please check (enable) this preference and the missing user created presets will return. Please note that this only occurs on Mac.

Revel Publish Service
The Revel Publish Service for Lightroom 5 is available here.

Lightroom 5 in the Adobe Application Manager
Some Creative Cloud members have reported issues downloading Lightroom 5. Please see this help document for further instructions.

Lightroom 5 Upgrade Eligibility
We’ve had several questions around who is eligible for an upgrade to Lightroom 5. Any Lightroom 1, 2 3, or 4 version of Lightroom, education editions included, can utilize the upgrade version of Lightroom 5. The prior version of Lightroom does not need to be installed on the computer, however you will need the prior version serial number at the time of installation of Lightroom 5. If the prior version is still installed on the computer, Lightroom 5 will automatically pick up that serial number so you don’t need to go digging through boxes or your email.

Customers who purchased Lightroom 4 through the Mac App Store are eligible for upgrade pricing. Please see here for instructions here. Lightroom 4 must be installed on the machine before installing the Lightroom 5 upgrade.

Upgrade policy for those that just purchased Lightroom 4
We’ve seen quite a few questions from those who have just purchased Lightroom 4. If you purchased Lightroom 4 very recently you may be eligible for a complimentary upgrade to Lightroom 5: http://www.adobe.com/go/pa
