Congrats. You probably just got your new camera and probably excited to use it, but your pictures are not as great as you thought it would be. Photography isn't a walk-in the park hobby and it takes time and to master. Remember you can have the latest and greatest photography gear and still have crappy photos. There are some people with 10-15 yr old cameras that still take awesome pictures, just because of understanding their gear, what limitations they may have, and most of all understanding how light works.

Canon has made it easy for new photographer to understand more about photography. Although this is from canon, its not exclusive to just canon users. Its free to view and a good source to learn if you are just starting photography. I hope this sheds some light for new shooters as i was one as well.

I can see the title causing some arguments here, especially when Sarlacc sees it. If I recall properly, I believe he was one of the guys that argued that a picture taker is NOT a photographer. I do agree with that though, and agree this is a good post to help beginners learn. I do get a laugh when I see family members who when out and bought a DSLR at Costco, or wherever and then shoot on auto always. They think that my camera is better because I tend to get better results. I am IN NO WAY a pro and have issues with choosing proper exposure all the time, but I have taken time to learn what the functions of my camera are, and the principals of shooting.

A DSLR in Auto is nothing more than a faster point and shoot.

I can see he arguing about it. In some ways, he is correct(before even saying it here) but i think he would have more of a problem if that person thought they were a pro photographer with a semi-pro camera. lol.
