I have set my camera to B+W mode (with RAW it still opens in LR with all colors) to try to help me "train" my eye to see more in terms of B+W but man is it tough.

I see what I think would be a good shot, take it, check the LCD and it looks meh in B+W. Probably a good color shot with the differences in coloration, but in B+W it is SO much about the tone and the contrast.

Honestly, i used to think B+W was what I would do with a shot that had blown highlights/darks, or other similar imperfections. Learning to shoot JUST for B+W is hard for me!

you should see the rest of that shoot...different idea, pretty cool results.

Stog, funny enough, it's when I think the picture is sh*t that I end up going B&W in hopes that there's something interesting enough to salvage it if I remove the noise, color and possibly somewhat blurry image.

Also: I'm pretty offended by the thread title. I have a lot of Asian friends that are into photography and I think they should be free to post in here too.

for me, if you're going B&W or sepia, sometimes some noise/grain isn't so bad. It looks like you did a lot of noise reduction, which means losing details... just my

btw, while most churches don't allow flash photography during the ceremony, the part where the bride and the groom walking out ISN'T part of the ceremony because it's technically over. So using flash at that point is fine (in most cases). It's not so much that flash can't be used during the ceremony but any distractions on the priest or pastor is frowned upon, and by the time they are walking out, there's no distractions because the priest/pastor is done... At least that's to my understanding

Very cool, BW HDR. Consider removing the motion artifacts in the tree in the foreground and the flag on the upper right? (Photomatix lets you do this easily).

PTTL, amazing shot!. How does it look if you crop out the right side of the frame from the flag post and beyond (to the right)?

or this:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/petshots/12054185303/" title="Passaic Falls 6540,41 comp lr adj cl BW by ptcanon3ti, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3676/12054185303_00605546fb_b.jpg" width="683" height="1024" alt="Passaic Falls 6540,41 comp lr adj cl BW"></a>

Thoughts?

pttl, I like the vertical crop but that's just my opinion. I guess I just don't think the fence on the top right adds to the image.

Also, I like the magic tree in the foreground!

I don't mind the fence. At least it isn't a chain link.

I like the landscape crop. The fence doesn't bother me, and I like the cliff on the right of the frame. I do think it's a bit stronger without the flag, but the vertical crop feels a little too tight for me. Also, the cool trees in the top left corner get lost in the vertical crop.

Nice dialogue on pttl's shot, would like to see that continue. Trying to help each other make our shots stronger.

I find the landscape image the strongest, because of the magical tree at the top left. Also on the vertical one there is some processing that brought in a lot of noise, especially in the sky. My crop suggestion for the landscape one is like this, removing the pole at the top left, and also a good portion of the right side, which I find a bit uninteresting - 2 things that take away from the prominent subjects of the photo - the bridge, the falls, and the tree.

It`s a busy photo. With the flag, the house, the tree and the falls(which is the subject) there are at least 5 pics within this picture. The actual photo is well taken.

Yeah…the vertical shot is actually a different shot altogether. I tried out Silver FX for pp, hence the noisy sky.
