^ Key is pricing for sure. $500 can buy great units from Garmin, Tom Tom, Magellan, etc...

I prefer the portable units because they can easily be updated, hacked, and switched to any car.

One of the main feature of having an intergrated nav is the fact you have a nice looking GUI display for most of the interior appointments like A/C and radio. The VW/Garmin unit doesn't offer enough differentiation from the other PNUs.

I will likely never buy another daily-driver that does not have integrated nav.

On a side note, I thought I read VW was working with Google to integrate Google Maps/Google Earth into VW's new nav systems. Perhaps that has gone by the way-side or was just a rumor.

Not worth it for $500 either. This is a DIY except for it being integrated.

It's affixed with glue?? :thumbsdow And paying $2k for an in-dash navi is a joke only for people that refuse to pay for one.

Agreed, this is pretty worthless. Especially compared to the OEM VW nav unit. Not only is it hi-def screen, but it has 3D views, AND displays your next direction right in front of you in the MDI display. $2000 pretty seems a 'tad' overpriced.

Dont forget you get rear view camera with most built in navigation and screen size is usally bigger like 7 to 8 inches. it is just more convenient when you consider all integration feature. It may not be worth while for $20k econo cars but it make sense for cars in $30K+.

Volkswagen: R Performance Division news

ELLMAU, Austria — During a related Volkswagen drive event here in the Austrian Alps, VW spokespeople from Wolfsburg offered up a tantalizing bit of news: The company will establish its own new performance division, R GmbH. The official announcement will be made at the 2010 Geneva Auto Show in March.

As an executive told Inside Line: "BMW has its M, Mercedes has AMG, and our sibling Audi has Quattro. This new R division will be our Quattro."

The new R GmbH is an expanded version of the Europe-market VW Individual, an entity that offers a vast catalogue of sporty personalization items for customers' standard VW cars. For example, the CC R-Line was recently announced and was displayed at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show as a formal set offering within the CC lineup.

So far, North America has seen bits and pieces of Individual division R-Line offerings through the VW GearStore or in a few rare special editions. Although the company was gauging interest by showing the CC R-Line at Detroit, it has not said whether it will introduce it in the U.S. market.

The R division of the Wolfsburg factory is to begin creating from-the-ground-up R versions of every appropriate model in the VW showroom, as recently seen on the 266-horsepower Golf R with 4Motion and the 261-hp Scirocco R. The Golf R, at least, is rumored to be heading to North America in early 2011

The Golf R was in Montreal for their Auto Show so I'm hoping to start seeing it here (Chicago or NYIAS?).

Rumors on VWVortex are 270hp, AWD, 6MT or DSG, 2 or 4 doors.

And the R is lighter than the R32 with 20hp more.

Should be okay for the first 3 years, you got warranty. Then again I wouldn't want to pay $30K for a brand new one.

Review: Edmunds drives the 2012 Golf R ... and humps its leg

Very positive review of the Golf R and speculation it'll start at $32,500.

I'm surprised nobody ever posted the CC R Line in the Passat CC thread.

It's debut was quite a while ago.

Well, I guess this executive really doesn't know what he was talking about. Quattro to Audi is like x-drive to BMW, 4matic to Mercedes. He should've said Audi has S/RS.

The AWD system is quattro with a lower-case Q. The Quattro they're talking about made the rally-spec Quattro back in the 80s.

Volkswagen developing plug-in Jetta, hybrid Passat, Golf models by 2013

VW announced in February that it would be moving its electric vehicle development in-house, and now the German automaker announced plans for a series of new electrically-propelled vehicles that will be developed by their new in-house EV team. Among the new electric vehicles reportedly in the works is a plug-in hybrid version of the popular Jetta model – due in 2012.

Today, Volkswagen hosted a special event in Berlin, Germany, during which the automaker announced that it is hard at work developing a series of vehicles that will rely on electric propulsion starting in 2013.

VW announced that it will release a hybrid version of the Jetta by 2012, with the automaker’s first electric vehicle, the Up blue-e-motion, set to hit the market in 2013. Immediately following the release of the Up blue-e-motion will be the Golf blue-e-motion, which debuted today. At the same time, VW will release a Jetta blue-e-motion, which will share the electric powertrain with the Golf EV.

Although VW will begin selling a hybrid version of the Jetta in 2012, the hybrid version of the Golf and Passat won’t follow until 2013.

In June of 2008, VW had announced that it planned on bringing three hybrids and one electric vehicle to market by 2010. Due to delays, the vehicles have been pushed back a full three years, but the automaker says it is now working to fast-track the vehicles to market.

I thought we had gotten past all this global warming nonsense what with the entire movement having been largely discredited in recent months....

Unfortunately car companies run on multiple-year cycles so we are going to have to endure all of this eco-crap that was initiated 5 years ago for the next 5 years or so...

There's too much money in it for Libs to give it up (Cap & Trade).
