The answer is probably, no BUT can you get a MazdaSpeed 3 in auto? My girlfriend is going to be looking at cars in the near future and doesn't know how to drive stick. I offered to teach her, but she doesn't want to learn on my Mustang.

No, no auto. 6-speed manual only.

Mazda
How exactly does this affect me as a consumer? I don't read the dealership service "award" ratings from Mazda. I ask people where they take their cars and if they've had a good experience there. I go by word of mouth, not some stupid survey system.

I'm going to get a MS3 to replace my Mazda 3s and gladly do it because my Mazda is the best built car I've ever had.

Wow, that is a great alternative to the dodge caliber. If it comes in under the price or at the same price as the SRT-4, then Dodge has something to worry about.

Unless the airbags are standard, IIHS won't test with them. If the manufacturer wants to give them a free car with airbags to test, then IIHS will re-test.

Most small cars without side curtains and airbags don't fare too well.

I think they should be standard but I would never buy another car w/o them.

Oh, and with 263hp/280lb ft on tap, there's no way I'd come anywhere near the 20/28mpg mark.

I'd like to see/feel how the ECU limits Tq steer. It apparently dials back the Tq in the first 3 gears.

Homey say ?

Not even close! I'd throw it in a camparo w/ the VW GTI and watch the Speed3 run circles around it.

I was in my friend's '05 3s and it was ok, not great. I HATE all the glaring RED guages and controls....they hurt my eyes and it's just too much bright red. I really prefer softer colors for lights in my car. I guess for the power, the speed3 would be great, but I couldn't spend much time on the inside of it.

Not even close? How is a comparison between the MZ3 and the GTI any closer?

I'm no Dodge fanboy but I think it would be interesting to see if the SRT-4's extra hp would be enough to overcome the Mazdaspeed's obvious suspension/chassis tuning advantage. These two are going to be the most powerful front wheel drive sport compacts and I'd love to see them go at it.

AutoMobile mag dyno tests

I have no idea how old this might be, but it's a good write up, I pasted only their conclusions, but it's not a really long read for each individual engine. And maybe it's just me, but the order listed seems to correspond with their ranking (even though they don't really rank them) of how satisfying each engine is.

Linky

2007 Volkswagen GTI, Honda Civic Si, and Mazdaspeed 3 Dyno Tests: The Truth in Numbers

GTI: Castrated or not, cheating or not, this engine is immensely satisfying at all times. It sounds great, revs willingly, gets great gas mileage, and makes boatloads of power. It's a beautifully executed engine that makes good on VW's heritage of fine motors. You don't even have to hate the computer weenie.

Si:Regardless of its relative disadvantage to the cheaters, the Civic Si has s a truly entertaining engine that's filled with tech features that (other than the throttle calibration) do nothing to detract from the feeling that someone poured their whole soul into its development. It takes only one trip to the redline to envision that mad scientist thrashing this car mercilessly, laughing all the way.

MazdaSpeed 3:Punch the accelerator at 3000 rpm in a Mazdaspeed 3 and you'll probably smile, too. But if you compare it to the more sophisticated engines of the other cars here, you may find it lacking the linearity and broad-range power delivery that set apart the merely powerful engines from the truly magnificent.

Looks like Hondata has some work to do on that Civic powerband.

I love the 2.0T in the GTI. So much potential.

Lots of speculation that the hood up and fan placement didn't utilize the TMIC in the Mazdaspeed 3. The GTI's FMIC was thought to benefit more from the test setup.

No one knows for sure ....

From Leftlanenews...

Mazda has unveiled its Mazda3 MPS Extreme at the Sydney Motor Show. Based on the popular Mazda3, the MPS has been tuned by Mazda's Australia Motorsport manager, Allan Horsley, to produce 281 horsepower and 313 lb-ft of torque from the car's 2.3-liter DISI turbo engine. Mazda didn't release any updated performance stats but did say that the upgrades should be good for about a 20% improvement in performance.

The Mazda3 MPS also includes a free-flowing two-inch exhaust system and a revised suspension that sits 25 mm lower than the standard model. Wheels are upgraded from 18 inch alloys to 19 inch BBS Motorsport wheels.

The exterior of the Mazda3 MPS is finished in red paint with black stripes along the hood and rear fenders, as well as a black roof.
