Spy Shots: '06 Mazdaspeed3 - - by KGP Photography - - Source: The Car COnnection

Mazda engineers have been spotted around Germany 's Nürburgring race track with an enhanced version of their Mazda3 - an early prototype for the MazdaSpeed3. It appears that this prototype has a larger, more aggressive exhaust tip, but the real story is found up front.

The large makeshift hood scoop is clear proof that something special has been added to the engine - most likely a turbocharger given the recently turbocharged MazdaSpeed6. The MazdaSpeed6 turbocharges the 2.3-liter four-cylinder, resulting in 274 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque, which necessitated a switch to an AWD drivetrain.

Given its place in Mazda's pecking order, it would seem likely that this Mazda3 prototype has a turbocharged version of the 2.0-liter engine, putting horsepower at somewhere near the 235 range. With such power levels, a MazdaSpeed3 version would obviously benefit from all- wheel traction, but could also conceivably remain a front-driver.

We expect that more advanced MazdaSpeed3 prototypes will display revised sheetmetal, with a more aggressive front fascia and a properly integrated hood bulge to accommodate the turbocharger.

I really like the look and feel of the 5dr Mazda3. MazdaSpeed6, like many VW's is too damn heavy.

I doubt it would start that high since I read that the MPS6 will start out at $27,995.

Mazda raises Mazda3 output on brisk demand - - Reuters / June 28, 2005 - - Source: Automotive News

TOKYO -- Mazda Motor Corp. said on Tuesday it is raising output of its Mazda3 compact car by making the hot-selling model at another domestic factory that reopened last year.

Production of the sporty compact, called Axela in Japan, began on Tuesday at the Ujina No.2 plant near its headquarters in Hiroshima, western Japan. Mazda plans to build 2,000 units a month, all bound for overseas markets, at the Ujina No.2 plant, it said in a statement.

That will bring total annual production of the Mazda3 to about 350,000 units, a Mazda spokeswoman said. Last year, the automaker produced 337,377 units of the car at two other factories in western Japan.

The compact model, first launched in October 2003, is in short supply all over the world, especially in Europe, North America and Australia.

In the first four months of this year, Mazda3 sales in the United States totalled 31,722 units, up 32 percent from the same period last year. Its popularity has also helped Mazda to become Australia's top-selling import brand in the year to date.

The Ujina No.2 plant, called U2 inside Mazda, also builds the Mazda2/Demio subcompact, and has been redesigned to be more flexible to allow production of a wide range of models, including minivans.

The car will be called Mazdaspeed Axela in Japan, Mazdaspeed3 in North America and, in other key regions including Europe, Australia and New Zealand, Mazda3 MPS.

Mazda looked to embody the three distinct attributes with the new vehicle: Driving Fun, Ownership Delight and Everyday User-Friendly Convenience. With its compact, lightweight body and substantial power generated by its 2.3L MZR DISI TURBO petrol engine, Mazda3 MPS is one of the most powerful high-performance sports compacts with front-wheel drive (FWD) on the road today.

The wording of the press release is a little tricky but it seems a Mazdaspeed 3 and possibly a refreshed Mazda3-series line will both be introduced at Geneva.

There will be a lot of dissapointed people that were expecting AWD and the same twin turbo engine as the mazda6speed. But on a whole it will be received with open arms!

I thought Honda was catching up with the 4 door Civic Si, but now they will have to play catch up again. So sad....

Damn, 256hp ... This thing is not going to be cheap.

That's nearly 100hp more than my Mz3s has right now ... I can't imagine

I still think Honda will have made up some ground with the Si sedan. But if Honda really wants to compete in this niche market, they'd create a Type R model with the modified powertrain/driveline from the upcoming RDX. It seems like that would give the STi and Evo a run for the money (pun?).

Yeah, but if anything, they would do it to an RSX, and not the Civic. That would be stepping on acura's toes.

The MS6 has a 4cyl single turbo. The MS3 will prolly have the same motor with less output and fwd.

If Honda wants to compete they'll have to move away from high reving tourqeless engines and drop a turbo in the 2.0L. If you think about it they've been stuck at 200HP and no tourque since the 1994 SR-V and 1997 Type R. Time to move up.

oh yeah dont get me wrong i think it will be a great car, our 3s is great, and with quite a few extra ponies it would be a blast to drive. i just keep looking for nice AWD cars so i can stay away from the need to buy an SUV.

The big news here is the turbo I4 from the Mazdaspeed6 makes its way into the engine bay of this front driver.

I agree, I drove a friends new SI earlier today and it has a BRILLIANT chassis but the engine is just gutless. My track cars and weekend cars have all been high rev NA screamers, so I am used to staying in the power band. My current car digs in just south of 4K and pulls hard and solid up to its 8k redline, my only bitch about Honda engines is the TINY power band in their high HP engines. I understand the jewel quality of the SI's engine but in todays climate you need a more torque and even a little more HP, even if it means displacement or FI. In Europe (UK particularly) and possibly Japan (don't know their market well) the SI is right up their alley but in the US we value 0-60 and 1/4m too much. When I first saw the new SI, I thought is was a winner, in the few short months since then it doesn't even look like a podium finisher... but I would still like to have one.
