That's what the car is meant for. Now, if you crash it, that is another thing-he does not offer insurance and requires your own policy to cover it. It is $199.00 a day if I remember correctly.

Big Boost to Lotus Line-up

Supercharger for Elise, 240bhp for Exige S, amongst 2008 model year upgrades

Foreword by Mike Kimberley, CEO of Group Lotus plc

retails its products in 32 countries and is growing quickly in new territories such as Malaysia,
Korea and China in South East Asia and the Gulf States in the Middle East. Lotus Engineering
continues to provide and develop high technology engineering consultancy for the worlds motor
industry.

The exciting Model Year 08 line up heralds increased levels of performance for both Elise and
Exige, to provide a peerless driving experience. Listening to Lotus owners’ views we are
determined to continue with improvements to the experience of Lotus ownership and as an
example we have developed the option packs to simplify the purchasing process. We are
expanding our future model line-up to include exciting new products such as a mid range 2+2

· 240 PS Performance Package Exige

2008 Model Year in more detail

Lotus powers into the 2008 Model year with the most powerful series production version of the
Elise to date – the Supercharged Elise SC – and a 240 PS Performance Pack option for the
Supercharged Exige S that further reinforces its credentials as a “race car for the road”.

But extra performance is only a part of the 2008 Model Year story. There are several other
enhancements that make the Elise and Exige ranges more sophisticated and better value than
ever before. Driver and passenger airbags are now standard on all models.

An advanced new instrument pack (again common to all models) provides extra information
about vehicle systems, including servicing reminders, but thanks to ‘secret until lit’ technology,
drivers won’t be alerted to such details until it is necessary. A completely new alarm/immobiliser
system has allowed the introduction of a new Lotus designed key with integrated fob, the
famous Lotus roundel operating as one of its three functional buttons.

Following feedback from customers and dealers the number of option packs for the Elise and
Exige has been reduced from four to two, but with increased specification for each. And should
customers wish to personalise their Lotus still further, there are a myriad of accessories
available through the Lotus Aftersales Operation.

Introducing the Supercharged Elise SC
The biggest news from the 2008 Model Year Lotus line-up is the introduction of the

Supercharged Elise SC, a 220 PS version of the multi award-winning roadster, easily identified
by its new rear spoiler and unique new design of alloy road wheels.

Despite the on-paper similarity with the Exige S, this is no mere engine swap – this is an all-
new, non-intercooled installation applied to the current Elise’s 1.8-litre 2-ZZ VVTL-i engine.

The Lotus-designed, Magnuson-produced supercharger uses a smaller Eaton rotor pack (an
M45 unit) than that of the current Exige S, and is married to the intake manifold plenum as part
of a single-piece casting. Combined with the absence of an intercooler and its associated
pipework, this integrated supercharger/intake assembly contributes to an 8kg reduction in
engine weight compared with the Exige S.

A further benefit of dispensing with the intercooler for the Elise SC application is the
supercharger packaging viability for Elise and improved rear visibility when adopted into the
Exige S, where vision from the rear view mirror is masked by the current intercooler installation.

The Elise SC has been designed to have different driving characteristics to the Exige S. In
keeping with its role as a supremely fast road car rather than extreme track machine, throttle
response is very progressive but also very direct, resulting in a measured, refined driving
experience.

But, as you might expect of a car with 220 PS and weighing only 903 kg (1987 lbs), the
performance of the Elise SC is electrifying – 0-60 mph in 4.4 secs / 0-100 km/h in 4.6 secs
(estimated); 0-100 mph / 160 km/h in 10.7 secs (estimated); top speed 150 mph / 240 km/h
(estimated). Although for the record, the Exige S remains the faster car on track, thanks to its
superior aerodynamics package that generates 42 kg (92 lbs) of downforce at 100 mph (160
km/h). The fuel economy of the Elise SC is impressive with an estimated combined figure of 9.1
litres / 100 km (31.0 mpg).

A new bespoke wheel design is introduced to the Elise SC, the rears having increased half an
inch in width to 8.0 inches, to give even better grip performance from the standard Lotus specific
Yokohama AD07 LTS 225/45 R17 tyres.

Airbags for all

In this safety-conscious age and with more and more owners using their Elise or Exige as daily
transport, demand has been growing for standard-fit airbags. Lotus have responded to provide
driver and passenger airbags as standard on all Elise and Exige models; previously they were
available as part of the Super Touring option package. The new dashboard has a new, soft-
touch surface finish.

More than just new dials

The new instrument pack in the Elise and Exige contains so much more than just a fresh pair of

– stylishly back-lit – dials. It also features a high-definition LCD message panel that can display
a scrolling text message with vehicle systems information.
The new instrument pack always displays the fuel gauge, engine temperature and odometer,
however you can select to display the time (from November 07), trip distance or a digital readout of your speed in the opposite calibration to that of your speedometer dial – if your dial is in
mph, the readout is in km/h.

Warning symbols are ‘secret until lit’, keeping the instrumentation free from visual clutter and
distraction until absolutely necessary. New gearchange ‘shift’ lights similarly remain hidden until
required. There are three shift up lights, cumulatively lighting when the driver is getting closer to
the rev limiter and when all three are illuminated, they flash to indicate that you’re almost on the
rev limiter so time to change up a gear!

A “key” issue

In response to forthcoming legislation, the Elise and Exige both have a new “Thatcham
approved” alarm/immobiliser system. This, in turn, has enabled a new Lotus design of key that
incorporates the controls for the alarm/immobiliser and central locking functions. This upmarket
key fob features three buttons, the one which locks the doors and sets the alarm/immobiliser is
stylishly crowned with the famous Lotus roundel. The second button unlocks the doors and de-
actives the alarm/immobiliser, and the final button is a panic button.

Complete range of option packages – from four down to two

Partly because of customer demand and partly due to the fact that airbags are now standard
across the Elise and Exige ranges, the number of trim option packages has been cut from four
down to two.

The previous Super Touring and Super Sport packages have been dropped, in part because
they included the aforementioned airbags.

The contents of the revised Touring pack, for both Elise and Exige, now includes:

· Full leather or Microfibre suede-effect interior
· Leather trimmed centre console
· Leather handbrake gaiter
· Sound system ipod connection
· Full carpets, with embroidered logo
· Auxiliary driving lights (where legally allowed)
· Sound insulation kit
· Cup holder
The Elise Sport pack includes:

· Bilstein sports dampers
· Traction control
· Twin oil coolers
· ProBax Sport seats
· Hi-Power silver ultra lightweight Forged wheels with standard AD07 tyres
The Exige Sport pack includes:

· Traction control
· Twin oil coolers (standard on Exige S)
· ProBax Sport seats
· Adjustable front anti-roll bar
· T45 roll bar, with integrated harness mounts

23 October 2007 NEWS RELEASE Page 6of 8

The beauty of the Touring and Sport packs is that they can be combined so a customer can
have the additional interior and exterior equipment from the Touring pack with the sport
focussed equipment from the Sport pack.

Air conditioning, Lotus traction control, limited slip differential and hardtop are available as
stand-alone options.

Customers wanting to add further finishing touches to their Lotus – such as specifying an Exige
with the adjustable dampers and forged wheels that were part of the old Super Sport option
pack – will still be able to order from an extensive range of accessories.

As part of the 2008 Model Year enhancements, the Elise, Exige and Europa paint ranges have
been revised, with some less popular shades being dropped and new colours, including some
vibrant pearlescent colours, being introduced.

The new Premium Colour Range has been designed to further enhance the choice for
customers to individualise their cars. Most of the paints in this range require a more
sophisticated manufacturing process and are from our paint supplier’s premium range. The
paint colours in this range have been individually priced, and it is Lotus’ intention to extend and
change this range at periodic intervals.

Performance Pack – more punch, more ability for Exige S

· 308 mm front cross-drilled and vented discs with AP Racing four piston callipers
· Uprated front and rear brake pads
· Full length upsized roof scoop
· Variable slip traction control
· Uprated clutch plate and cover
· Uprated vehicle performance through enhanced power and torque delivery
· Launch control
Although hardly struggling in the performance department in standard 220 PS guise, the Exige
S is now being offered with an optional Performance Pack.

This raises power to the same 240 PS / 179 kW (minimum) at 8000 rpm enjoyed by the limited
edition 240R, courtesy of a Magnuson/Eaton M62 supercharger and new, faster flowing
injectors, and higher torque clutch system and an upsized roof scoop.

 s

23 October 2007 NEWS RELEASE Page 7of 8

This hike in power, together with an increase in torque to 170 lbft / 230 Nm / 23.5 kgm at 5,500
rpm from the standard 158.6 lbft / 215 Nm (22 kgm) at 5500 rpm, helps whisk the Performance
Pack Exige S from zero to 60mph in 4.0 secs / 0-100km/h in 4.2 secs (estimated) and from
standstill to 100mph in 9.7 secs (estimated). Top speed rises to 153 mph (estimated). The
power and torque of the 240 PS engine is increased across the rev range giving even more
flexibility. Inspite of this phenomenal performance the fuel economy is impressive with an
estimated combined figure of 9.1 litres / 100 km (31.0 mpg)

Of course the increased power and straight-line performance are only a couple of elements of
the Performance Pack option. The clutch is uprated and a clutch damper fitted; there are
thicker, 308mm diameter cross-drilled and vented discs at the front clamped by AP Racing four-
piston callipers; the standard brakes pads are replaced by uprated items and there are braided
brake hoses.

Keen to pass on lessons learned on the track with the Exige GT3 racing programme, Lotus
Sport has contributed another important technology to the Performance Pack – launch control
combined with variable traction control. This combo has already made its production debut with
the track-oriented Lotus 2-Eleven.

From the driver’s seat the launch control allows you to determine the number of revs you wish to
use during a standing start. Having programmed that limit, you then hold your foot down hard on
the throttle and sidestep the clutch at departure from the line time. The clutch damper cushions
the severity of the clutch / transmission engagement to minimise the stresses to the drivetrain
(noting that abusive/ continuous standing start applications will destroy the drivetrain
components). The launch control also keeps wheelspin at bay until 6 mph, after which the
traction control assumes its duties.

As with launch control, you can control the amount of traction control you require from the
driver’s seats, altering it on the move to suit the characteristics of particular corners. The
amount of traction control can be varied in over 30 increments from an optimum 7 percent tyre
slip to completely off. The message display in the new instrument pack displays what degree of
traction control you have currently dialled in.

2008 Model Year in more detail

Lotus powers into the 2008 Model year with the most powerful series production version of the Elise to date the Supercharged Elise SC and a 240 PS Performance Pack option for the Supercharged Exige S that further reinforces its credentials as a race car for the road. But extra performance is only a part of the 2008 Model Year story. There are several other enhancements that make the Elise and Exige ranges more sophisticated and better value than ever before. The new instrument pack in the Elise and Exige contains so much more than just a fresh pair of stylishly back-lit dials. It also features a high-definition LCD message panel that can display a scrolling text message with vehicle systems information.

The new instrument pack always displays the fuel gauge, engine temperature and odometer, however you can select to display the time (from November 07), trip distance or a digital readout of your speed in the opposite calibration to that of your speedometer dial if your dial is in mph, the readout is in km/h.

Warning symbols are secret until lit, keeping the instrumentation free from visual clutter and distraction until absolutely necessary. New gearchange shift lights similarly remain hidden until required. There are three shift up lights, cumulatively lighting when the driver is getting closer to the rev limiter and when all three are illuminated, they flash to indicate that youre almost on the rev limiter so time to change up a gear!

A key issue

In response to forthcoming legislation, the Elise and Exige both have a new Thatcham approved alarm/immobiliser system. This, in turn, has enabled a new Lotus design of key that incorporates the controls for the alarm/immobiliser and central locking functions. This upmarket key fob features three buttons, the one which locks the doors and sets the alarm/immobiliser is stylishly crowned with the famous Lotus roundel. The second button unlocks the doors and deactives the alarm/immobiliser, and the final button is a panic button.

Complete range of option packages from four down to two

Partly because of customer demand and partly due to the fact that airbags are now standard across the Elise and Exige ranges, the number of trim option packages has been cut from four down to two.

The previous Super Touring and Super Sport packages have been dropped, in part because they included the aforementioned airbags.

The contents of the revised Touring pack, for both Elise and Exige, now includes:

Full leather or Microfibre suede-effect interior
Leather trimmed centre console
Leather handbrake gaiter
Sound system ipod connection
Full carpets, with embroidered logo
Auxiliary driving lights (where legally allowed)
Sound insulation kit
Cup holder

The Elise Sport pack includes:

Bilstein sports dampers
Traction control
Twin oil coolers
ProBax Sport seats
Hi-Power silver ultra lightweight Forged wheels with standard AD07 tyres

The Exige Sport pack includes:

Traction control
Twin oil coolers (standard on Exige S)
ProBax Sport seats
Adjustable front anti-roll bar
T45 roll bar, with integrated harness mounts

The beauty of the Touring and Sport packs is that they can be combined so a customer can have the additional interior and exterior equipment from the Touring pack with the sport focussed equipment from the Sport pack.

Air conditioning, Lotus traction control, limited slip differential and hardtop are available as stand-alone options.

Customers wanting to add further finishing touches to their Lotus such as specifying an Exige with the adjustable dampers and forged wheels that were part of the old Super Sport option pack will still be able to order from an extensive range of accessories.

As part of the 2008 Model Year enhancements, the Elise, Exige and Europa paint ranges have been revised, with some less popular shades being dropped and new colours, including some vibrant pearlescent colours, being introduced.

The new Premium Colour Range has been designed to further enhance the choice for customers to individualise their cars. Most of the paints in this range require a more sophisticated manufacturing process and are from our paint suppliers premium range. The paint colours in this range have been individually priced, and it is Lotus intention to extend and change this range at periodic intervals.

Press release...

Lotus unveils the Eco Elise technology demonstrator at the British Motor Show, capitalising on great strides forward in green technology.

The Eco Elise project promotes a different perspective on green, one which does not revolve solely around tailpipe CO2. This holistic approach is in keeping with the progressive Lotus culture, driving Lotus to become the worlds green automotive consultancy.

Sustainable materials, hemp, eco wool and sisal have been developed for body panels and trim and, combined with hi-tech water based paint solutions, showcase new affordable green technologies. The green credentials of the technology on show in the Eco Elise have been analysed throughout the lifecycle of the car.

A green gear change display has been integrated into the dashboard to promote greener driving as well as a weight reduction programme, illustrating the holistic approach taken. The energy expended to manufacture the car has been evaluated, working to the 3Rs - Reduce, Re-use and Recycle.

Mike Kimberley, CEO of Group Lotus plc commented "This Eco Elise is a great example of the advanced and affordable green technologies Lotus is developing. We are at the cutting edge of environmental technology and are determined to push forward with our green agenda. The Lotus brand values of lightweight, fuel efficient, and high performance are more relevant today than they ever have been. We are keen to ensure that Lotus as a company and its products offer an ethical, green option that appeals to our customers".

In keeping with the performance through light weight philosophy, the Eco Elise weighs 32 kg (70.5 lbs) less than the standard Elise S, which means that the efficient Elise S engine in the Eco Elise will give higher fuel economy figures and even better performance.

Dramatic improvements to the culture and operations at Lotus has rewarded the company with staggering reductions in energy (Electricity 14%, Gas 30%) and water (11%) consumed across the Hethel headquarters in 2007, compared to 2006. These advances have coincided with improvements in recycling, with 57% of waste product now being recycled.

The new green materials sourced for this car have been carefully studied to ensure that each technology used reduces the environmental impact of the vehicle. The life of the components has been analysed; during the production stage, in-use and at the end of the vehicles life. The technology used aims to offer lower emissions of both solvents and CO2 in the lifecycle of the vehicle, with reductions in energy consumed during manufacture.

The Eco Elise will be displayed in the Greener Driving Pavilion at the British International Motor Show from 23rd July until 3rd August. The project displays affordable green technology that is intended to be feasible and production viable in the near term future.

The Lotus Eco Elise in more detail

The project focuses on developments in:

- Sustainable materials
- Cleaner manufacturing processes
- Renewable energy generation
- Reducing carbon miles
- Efficient driving techniques
- Weight reduction

The renewable materials have been incorporated into the project, with hemp, eco wool and sisal providing natural, biodegradable engineering materials. Cleaner manufacturing processes have been sought, utilising the latest water based paint technology. Using this paint system saves energy and reduces emissions of solvents from the paint shop. Solar panels have been set into the hemp hard top to help power the electrical systems and give a means of renewable energy generation.

With the use of locally farmed hemp, the carbon miles to produce the Eco Elise are reduced, in keeping with the holistic approach to this vehicle. The Eco Elise puts an emphasis on efficient driving techniques by using an economy gear change display to improve fuel efficiency and promote greener driving. The car has undergone a weight reduction programme to add a little extra lightness, assisting in more economical, greener driving.

Sustainable materials

Sustainable hemp technical fabrics have been used as the primary constituent in the high quality A class composite body panels and spoiler. The renewable hemp has exceptional material properties that make for a very strong fibre. Historically hemp has been used in the manufacture of rope, illustrating the great strength of the material.

The hemp fibres have also been used in the manufacture of the lightweight Lotus designed seats. An additional benefit of using hemp is that it is a natural resource that requires relatively low energy to manufacture and absorbs CO2 whilst growing as a plant through natural photosynthesis. This hemp material is used with a polyester resin to form a hybrid composite, however it is hoped that a fully recyclable composite resin will be viable in the short-term future.

The Eco Elise seats are upholstered in a durable yet, biodegradable woolen fabric that has been given the EU Flower certificate to exemplify its environmental credentials. This new material is ethically produced and does not use any dyes or harmful processing. In fact the colour is created from the selection of sheep breeds used to produce the wool for the yarn, which increases the natural feel of the wool and reduces the processing of the cloth.

Sisal is a renewable crop that, like hemp, is used for its strong material properties. Sisal has been used for the carpets in the Eco Elise, as it is a tough, abrasion resistant material. The use of these materials illustrates the capability at Lotus of utilising new, advanced materials and the flexibility of the manufacturing facilities.

Cleaner manufacturing processes

Whilst improving the green credentials of the Lotus production facilities, the Lotus Paint Facility, in partnership with Du Pont has developed a totally water-based paint system. This paint solution includes primer, colour coat and lacquer, and it is the first time that it has been possible to hand spray a water based A class production paint finish.

In using this progressive water based technology, Lotus is able to achieve impressive savings in energy consumption due to the low cure temperature this paint requires. An additional benefit of this paint system is the reduction in emissions of solvents, all of which contribute to substantial cost savings for Lotus. This is a result of the unique collaboration with Du Pont in pushing forward low-volume paint spraying technology. This technology is anticipated to be available in production cars in the near future.

Renewable energy generation

The hemp hard top on the Eco Elise has two flexible solar panels neatly embedded in the roof, contributing power to the electrical systems and saving energy that would be drained from the engine.

The solar panels have been integrated into the hard top to illustrate the feasibility of applying this technology. This application shows the installation of solar panels into a composite A class panel with a double curvature. Using this technology on a greater number of panels would make it possible to provide more power, especially on a larger vehicle.

Reduction in carbon miles

The hemp fibres have been farmed in East Anglia, thus reducing the carbon miles incurred in the production of this Elise. Lotus Manufacturing has component manufacturing facilities and a paint facility at its headquarters in Hethel, Norfolk, with another manufacturing site a short distance away in Norwich. The company operates a carefully managed logistics system operating between sites to improve efficiency, reduce costs and carbon miles. This is a Kanban driven barcode system that has been adopted by key suppliers. The process also uses packaging that is recycled many times over to eliminate waste.

Efficient driving techniques

Lotus cars have red shift lights to help drivers extract the maximum performance from the engine. However for the Eco Elise, Lotus designed software has been developed to assist drivers in maximising the fuel efficiency of the engine. A green gear shift display has been integrated into the instrument panel to ensure that gears are changed at the optimum point to reduce emissions and save fuel.

Weight reduction

"Performance through light weight" is so synonymous with Lotus. The reduction in mass improves the handling and braking performance and also reduces the effort required to accelerate the car. The weight reduction philosophy has even extended to the audio system with an exceptionally lightweight stereo and speaker system from Alpine saving 1.5 kg (3.3 lbs). The system uses MP3/ iPod technology in a sleek modern design.

The Eco Elise uses special lightweight wheels that reduce the unsprung mass and contribute a weight saving of approximately 15.8 kg (34.8 lbs) over the already super light Elise wheels. The weight saving programme for the Eco Elise has resulted in a total saving of around 32 kg (70.5 lbs) over the feather light Elise S, which reduces the fuel required to drive the car.

At first, I thought all that extra decor & wool/wood trims inside the cabin would add a substantial amount of weight... yet wow! Props to Lotus for pulling this off - not only in keeping to their low-weight philosophy & utilizing environment-friendly materials inside the car, but a dramatic change in their manufacturing... that's what is going to make a difference in the long run. Good start

2011 Lotus Elise

Press release...

The Lotus Elise revolutionised the sportscar market 14 years ago when the small lightweight agile 2-seat mid engine sportscar was introduced. By ensuring that the Elise stuck rigidly to Lotus’ core values of performance through light weight, the Elise was able to produce supercar performance with city car economy.

Making its debut at the 80th International Geneva Motorshow, the 2011 model year Lotus Elise introduces a number of changes and improvements to maintain its class leading position.

For the 2011 model year, the Elise range will consist of the following variants:

• Lotus Elise – 136 PS, less than 155 g of CO2 /km – new 1.6 litre engine *
• Lotus Elise R - 192 PS, 196 g of CO2 /km - 1.8 litre engine
• Lotus Elise SC – 220 PS, 199 g of CO2 /km - 1.8 litre supercharged engine

Key changes and improvements to the whole of the 2011 model year Elise range

• New evolution body design incorporating new front clamshell, rear bumper and engine cover
• New all in one integrated headlights including LED day light running lights and LED direction indicators
• Improved aerodynamics with a reduction in Cd by 4%, resulting in better fuel economy
• New cast and forged wheels
• Vehicle warranty increased from 2 years to 3 years and 36, 000 miles

Additional changes for the 2011 model year entry level Lotus Elise

• New high technology 1ZR-FAE 1.6 litre engine with Valvematic and Dual VVT-I technology to optimise the performance and efficiency of the engine
• Less than 155 g of CO2 per km (an improvement of over 13% compared to the 2010 Elise S)*
• Combined fuel consumption 6.14 litres / 100 km (46 mpg)*
• New 6 speed close ratio gearbox
• Cruise control available as part of the Touring pack

The body – an evolution

The new 2011 model year Elise range is on sale now and will be in showrooms from April 2010. The body of the new 2011 model year Elise is an evolution of the iconic Elise design, retaining the character and style, while offering a more planted, purposeful stance and a pure, contemporary look that links it to the Evora. As with all Lotus product the design is an exciting blend of dramatic style and functional efficiency.

The new Elise body has a fresh sculptured front, including a new bumper, front clam and access panel that combine to give the Elise a wider look with more road presence.

At the rear of the car the new engine has been encased by a distinctive “twin-spine” engine cover whilst lower down a more aggressive diffuser is tightly wrapped by an elegant new bumper design that now includes the rear licence plate.

New headlamp units with distinctively sculptured LED lighting guides (incorporating daytime running lamps and direction indicators) give a contemporary twist to this classic design. Elsewhere, the signature, Lotus “mouth” and familiar sculptured forms have been sensitively refined to give a crisper, more dynamic look. The repositioning of lamp functions has enabled the creation of broad clean surface between the fenders which combines with sleek corner intakes and prominent splitter detail to give a broader more planted stance.

The theme of purity is carried through to the cooling apertures that are efficiently finished with a new lightweight aluminium mesh that gives the car a classically sporting character.

The rear boot is now opened from the cockpit rather than via a separate key operation. The high quality feel of the Elise is continued throughout the car with the Elise graphic incorporated into the new side LED direction indicators, like those on the Evora.

The driving position, from the perfectly positioned pedals and steering wheel, to the comfortable and supportive seats with ProBax** technology means that, like all Lotus cars, the driver becomes part of the car rather than being just a passenger.

With the sleek new body the aerodynamics have improved giving a reduction in the coefficient of drag of 4%.

Finally, a choice of two beautiful, light weight wheel designs are available; an incredibly light forged wheel and a new cast wheel completes the picture for this sensitive update of a Lotus Icon.

Additional changes to the 2011 model year Lotus Elise

The new 2011 model year Elise has a number of additional changes and improvements, with the installation of a new advanced 1.6 litre Valvematic engine meeting EURO 5 regulations. This new engine is 200cc smaller than the outgoing Elise S model and produces similar power (136 PS, 100 kW, 134 hp at 6800 rpm) with maximum torque of 160 Nm, 118 lbft at 4400 rpm, but offers a significant improvement to fuel economy of over 23%, to 6.14 litres / 100km (46 mpg)* and a reduction in CO2 emission by more than 13%*. This provides the new Lotus Elise with the lowest CO2 per performance for any gasoline high performance sportscar in the world. This high technology engine is mated to a new 6-speed manual gearbox, providing closer and more performance orientated ratios than the outgoing 5 speed box.

The 1.6 litre engine is controlled via the bespoke Lotus T6 engine management system. Cruise control is available on the Elise for the first time with the controls present on a stalk located to the left of the steering column.

New cast wheels have been designed specifically for the Elise and the new optional forged wheels weigh just 29.26 kg per set, 2.14 kg lighter than a set of lightweight cast versions. Both are available in silver or black colour.

Dany Bahar, Chief Executive of Group Lotus said, “The Lotus Elise revolutionised the sportscar when it was launched 14 years ago and now the Lotus Elise has become greener, giving drivers access to class leading performance with less guilt.”

Donato Coco, Director of Design said, “The Elise is an iconic sportscar and it was important that we did not complicate its design, so we made the car more pure in its look, improved the aerodynamics, and gave it a more contemporary look with high quality detailing.”

Paul Newsome, Director of Lotus Product Engineering said, “We are always looking at ways of keeping the Elise ahead of its peers and for the 2011 model year we have improved efficiency without losing the innate fun that has made the Elise legendary.”

Andreas Prillmann, Chief Commercial Officer for Lotus Cars said, “In its 14 years of production the Elise has accounted for 32% of all the 61 years of Lotus production, illustrating how significant to the brand and well loved it is. The 2011 model year Elise is greener, purer and more desirable, making it even more relevant to today’s marketplace. The new Elise underlines Lotus’ reputation as one of the most innovative sports car manufacturers in the world.”

The 2011 model year Elise in more detail.
The Elise - the entry model

Engine

The Lotus Elise introduces the new 1598 cm3, 1ZR-FAE engine, provided by Toyota. The key to this engine’s performance and efficiency is the Valvematic system (a variable valve lift mechanism), which is combined with the dual VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing-intelligent). The engine continuously controls intake valve opening/closing timing and the intake valve lift to vary the volume of the intake airflow, giving significant improvements in efficiency and fuel economy. This ensures optimal performance based on the engines operational condition, thus helping the Elise achieve both high fuel efficiency and high performance.

First of all, the maximum power output is achieved at near maximum revs (engine speed) of 6800 rpm and maximum torque (a respectable 160 Nm, 118 lb.ft) is reached at 4400 rpm. This gives a good combination of mid range pull but also encourages the driver to rev the engine to the maximum permitted engine speed of 7000 rpm (transient rev limit). Like all Elise sportscars, there are three shift up lights, on the binnacle cumulatively lighting when the driver is getting closer to the rev limiter and when all three are illuminated, they flash to indicate that the driver is almost on the rev limiter so time to change up a gear!

The height of the engine cover has been raised by 34mm to accommodate the taller 1ZR engine compared to the previous 1ZZ engine from the outgoing model due, in part, to the additional Valvematic technology included on the new engine. This has given Lotus engineers an opportunity to subtly redesign the rear engine cover to match the design theme from the front and rear of the car.

Chassis

The Lotus Elise is built around the revolutionary and award winning extruded and bonded aluminium chassis, with a lightweight steel rear subframe. The chassis weighs 68 kg (150 lbs) and has a stiffness of 9,800 Nm per degree, giving a high level of control of the suspension. At the rear, and also acting as a rear energy absorbing crash structure, a lightweight steel subframe carries the engine and gearbox. At the front, the radiator and key ancillaries are mounted into a high tech composite energy absorbing crash structure that is both lightweight, compact and over three times more energy absorbing than the equivalent steel structure.

Ride and handling

The legendary Lotus ride and handling gives a superb high performance, sporty drive, combined with a compliant ride and progressive on limit handling, it makes the Elise a car that demands to be driven. The entry level Lotus Elise weighs 876 kg, making it one of the lightest fully homologated sportscars in the world. This low weight translates into efficient performance with minimal environmental impact in terms of emissions and fuel consumption. The efficiency of the Elise structure means that the 136 PS (100 kW, 134 hp) delivers phenomenal performance. Few cars can match the delicacy and accuracy of the steering, throttle and brakes of the Elise and all of these factors contribute to the excellent driving experience of the Elise.

Safety

The Elise has high performance AP Racing callipers at the front and Brembo callipers at the rear linked to 282 mm vented and cross-drilled cast iron discs to give excellent stopping power. The Elise comes as standard with a track tuned ABS system that is designed to be unobtrusive under normal driving conditions. This system is designed to be used on track and has a high threshold, only intervening in emergencies. The ABS system is linked to a lightweight pedal box with steel pedal arms and extruded aluminium pads. This unit also has an electronic (drive-by-wire) throttle for quick, smooth and more linear engine response. The impressive braking coupled with excellent handling gives good primary safety and the composite front crash structure and rear crash protection offers efficient secondary safety. Driver and passenger airbags and pre-tensioning seatbelt are standard on all Elise models.

Prices will be announced in March 2010.

*The Lotus Elise is currently undergoing EC Whole Vehicle Type Approval and official fuel consumption and CO2 emissions figures, plus performance figures are not yet available. The official figures for fuel consumption and CO2 emissions and performance will be published on Group Lotus plc’s web site as soon as they become available (www.grouplotus.com) or may be obtained from the PR Department, Lotus Cars Limited, Potash Lane, Hethel, Norfolk, NR14 8EZ, UK.

**“ProBax™” seats

Introduced for 2006 Model Year Lotus Exige and Elise cars, ProBax™ seats are designed by Lotus and specifically adapted and developed by NuBax. ProBax™ seats help to significantly improve the postural position of the occupant’s spine whilst seated compared to similar seat shells without ProBax technology. This not only results in an improved level of comfort, but also has significant medical benefits - maintaining a natural curvature of the spine, and markedly improving the body’s blood flow. Increased blood flow has been shown to enhance response times, raise alertness levels and reduce the onset of muscle fatigue. Tests on Lotus seats, with the new ProBax™ technology, have shown an improvement in blood flow of up to thirty per cent over the pre-2006 Model Year Lotus seat. ENDS

Yeah the new aerodynamic front looks a little too blunt and not as aggressive... I think I like the older style a little better.
