Kelley Blue Book: Total Cost of Ownership Awards
Kelley Blue Book, www.kbb.com , the leading provider of new and used vehicle information, today announced its inaugural Total Cost of Ownership Award winners. Based on Kelley Blue Book's analysis, Kia and Audi are among this year's prestigious brand winners. Kia is the top brand among all manufacturers, while Audi is the top luxury brand, for low average total ownership costs. With a number of successful redesigns, greatly improved quality, superior fuel economy and competitively priced models, Kia sets itself apart from other non-luxury brands. Some of the key models contributing to Kia's success are the Soul, Optima and Sportage. Audi is a stand-out luxury brand because of its low depreciation and superior fuel economy among its lineup. Among the models driving Audi's achievement are the A3, A4 and Q5.
Other notable wins include the Chevrolet Volt, which was neck and neck with the Nissan LEAF. The Volt's slightly lower maintenance and insurance costs gives it the competitive advantage, making it the 2012 Total Cost of Ownership Award winner in the Electric Car category. The Chevrolet Volt has a 5-year ownership cost expected to total $40,629, while the Nissan LEAF's 5-year expected total is $42,089 with all key costs to own a vehicle considered.
In the subcompact car segment, less than $400 separates the top 3 models. The 2012 Nissan Versa, Toyota Yaris and Hyundai Accent come in close with their five-year Total Cost of Ownership totals. However, the Nissan Versa comes in No. 1 with the lowest Kelley Blue Book® Fair Purchase Price (the price consumers typically pay a dealer for a new car) among the 3 models. Its low Fair Purchase Price, combined with the best residual value, results in nearly 10% less depreciation than the other vehicles.
With some fierce competition, the 2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata is the hands-down winner in the Sports Car category, coming in with the lowest expected costs among all ownership factors against its competitors. The MX-5 Miata offers the lowest expected fuel costs with more than $1,000 in savings against the Hyundai Genesis Coupe and Chevrolet Camaro. While the model's Fair Purchase Price is nearly that of the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, it expects savings of more than $1,500 with its low depreciation over time.
Among luxury vehicles, the 2012 Audi A5 may not have the lowest Fair Purchase Price, but with all major expenditures considered, it offers the best 5-year Total Cost of Ownership by nearly $5,000 compared to the other models in its class. Outstanding residual values also give it the lowest depreciation. In addition, it is the least expensive to insure among all other vehicles in this segment.
The number of hybrid models available to consumers continues to grow, offering more competitive choices. "In regard to Total Cost of Ownership, the top three hybrid models are all Honda vehicles," said Flores. "Between the Honda Insight, CR-Z and Civic Hybrid, the Insight provides the best expected 5-year costs at $32,884 for the initial ownership period. This model offers the lowest Fair Purchase Price, resulting in the lowest depreciation over time."
In addition, although the Jeep Wrangler has a higher purchase price than the Toyota FJ Cruiser and Nissan Xterra, it beats its competition in the Mid-Size Sport Utility category with the lowest expected insurance and maintenance costs, combined with approximately $600 in fuel savings.

Based on analysis of Kelley Blue Book's 5-Year Cost to Own information for 2014 model-year new vehicles, Mazda and Lexus are the prestigious brand winners for the second consecutive year. In addition to a low average Fair Purchase Price and strong residual values across its full model lineup, Mazda is ranked among the lowest in fuel and insurance costs, making it the 2014 5-Year Cost to Own: Best Brand among all automakers. Kelley Blue Book® Fair Purchase Price is the price shoppers typically pay a dealer for a new car, based on actual new-car transactions and adjusted regularly as market conditions change. Some of the models driving Mazda's success include the MAZDA3, MAZDA6 and CX-5. Despite an average Fair Purchase Price higher than several of its competitors, Lexus offers the lowest depreciation cost of any eligible luxury brand, thanks to strong residual values across its full model lineup. Lexus also ranks lowest in repairs and is among the lowest in fuel and insurance costs. Some of the key models contributing to Lexus' stand-out performance include the ES, IS and RX models.
Another notable 5-Year Cost to Own Award win includes the 2014 Buick Encore, which is this year's 5-Year Cost to Own: Luxury Compact SUV/Crossover category winner. The Encore beat out the Acura RDX and BMW X3 in all categories except maintenance and repairs. Encore offers depreciation costs 35.7 percent lower than RDX and an impressive 63.7 percent lower than X3. In addition, this year's 5-Year Cost to Own: Plug-In Vehicle category winner, the 2014 Chevrolet Spark EV, bests the Chevrolet Volt and Honda Accord Plug-In Hybrid in nearly all ownership factors. Spark EV not only offers the lowest state fees, but also the lowest insurance, outperforming Volt by 50.5 percent and is 22.6 percent lower than Accord Plug-In Hybrid.

IRVINE, Calif. - Kelley Blue Book released its 5-Year Cost to Own awards on Wednesday, and taking the top spots were brands that are no strangers to this list.Subaru earned the brand-level award for the 2nd time in 3 years, while Acura received the top luxury mark for the 2nd straight year. KBB based the awards on its 5-Year Cost to Own data on 2017 model-year vehicles, taking into account depreciation, expected fuel costs, finance and insurance fees, maintenance and repair costs and state fees. Segment and overall winners are based on lowest projected costs. “New-car shoppers typically give more consideration to the cost of a car upfront, but sometimes other factors, such as depreciation, maintenance and fuel costs, can significantly increase total ownership costs,” Mike Sadowski, vice president of operations and general manager for Kelley Blue Book, said in a news release. “Kelley Blue Book’s 5-Year Cost to Own information evaluates the other out-of-pocket expenses drivers will incur beyond the initial purchase price, which can help consumers shop new-car smart and save money down the road by choosing the vehicle that best fits their needs and their long-term budget,” he said. Having owned both Acura and Subaru....... my CL-S costs me 22,000 in terms of price paid and maint over 10 years. next up we have a 2003 Subaru that cost me $8,000 over three years and still counting the 2014 Legacy cost me $16K for less than a year but long term will not be known for quite a while....

IRVINE, Calif. - Kelley Blue Book released its 5-Year Cost to Own awards on Wednesday, and taking the top spots were brands that are no strangers to this list.Subaru earned the brand-level award for the 2nd time in 3 years, while Acura received the top luxury mark for the 2nd straight year. KBB based the awards on its 5-Year Cost to Own data on 2017 model-year vehicles, taking into account depreciation, expected fuel costs, finance and insurance fees, maintenance and repair costs and state fees. Segment and overall winners are based on lowest projected costs. “New-car shoppers typically give more consideration to the cost of a car upfront, but sometimes other factors, such as depreciation, maintenance and fuel costs, can significantly increase total ownership costs,” Mike Sadowski, vice president of operations and general manager for Kelley Blue Book, said in a news release. “Kelley Blue Book’s 5-Year Cost to Own information evaluates the other out-of-pocket expenses drivers will incur beyond the initial purchase price, which can help consumers shop new-car smart and save money down the road by choosing the vehicle that best fits their needs and their long-term budget,” he said. There is nothing wrong here, statistically. It's not hard. If every model is in the top 5, even if none are number 1 (The only models shown here), there's a really good chance the brand is best overall.

Interesting observation looking at previous years winners from cursory review:
-In 2012, Kia and Audi wins. Kia has 1 category winner. Audi has Audi has 2 category winners.
-In 2013, Lexus and Mazda wins. Lexus has 1 category winner. Mazda has 0.
-In 2014, Mazda and Lexus wins. Mazda has 0 category winner. Lexus has 2 category winners.
-In 2016, Hyundai and Acura wins. Both has 0 category winners.
-In 2017, Subaru and Acura wins. Both has 0 category winners.
Interesting pattern indeed. But as above poster said, it may be due to many 2nd place finishes...though cursory look at this year's 2nd and 3rd places do not show much Acura models.
KBB's own website has not much other detailed PDF/report other than just a list and some brief descriptions. Would be interesting to get to know more stats behind this.
