The new RL will probably be a good amount bigger, so a coupe version might be too small to call it an RL coupe?

For some reason I've seen 3 Legend coupes this week on my commute to work and I could not agree more.....it is one slick looking coupe, even after all these years.

Doesn't appear bigger from this tiny ass pic that's floating around of the makeover.

And these taillights look like a cross between a BMW and a Mercedes.

The squared off shape apparent in that tiny pic doesn't seem to flow with the rest of this gently curved car. Won't be able to tell for sure until we see pix of the finished product. My main issue with the current design is that the character line on the rear quarter panel makes the car's butt look a little saggy. Maybe it should be straight or slightly upward curving. I'm not a car designer, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

^ I agree, it doesn't flow. Perhaps they've decided to not make it so curvy and added more squared off lines to it?

IMO, 2nd gen's RL body was also very good, looked like an upright luxury sedan. Too bad the engine and performance really didn't feel the part.

Auto sales plunge
Buyers flee SUVs and pickups but can't find the cars they want, resulting in steep declines at most automakers.

By Chris Isidore, CNNMoney.com senior writer
Last Updated: July 1, 2008: 2:19 PM EDT

.....

The Japanese automaker, which is No. 2 in U.S. vehicle sales, saw a 15.6% jump in sales of its compact Corolla. But sales of its fuel efficient subcompact Yaris, as well as of the Camry, Toyota's best selling U.S. model going into this month, declined slightly. The Prius, the nation's best-selling hybrid offering, saw its sales fall by a third, due to tight supplies.

.....
From the numbers, the Accord sales have gone up, but Camry gone down.

I understand that the Corolla and Matrix share platforms and engines but should their sales really be bundled together? I'd be interested to see the individual sales numbers.

TSX on fire

"Right product at the right time" - damn straight. I'd almost consider one over a TL, simply because it offers enough power, plenty of amenities, and amazing economy.

well, Honda sold 40000 Accords...vs less than 4000 TSX a month, and Honda has been selling the new Accord for longer, so..theoretically you should see like 30 accords before you see a TSX? I don't know....

Honda sales gain while others' fall (MSN Money)

July 2, 2008 6:00 PM ET

All Associated Press news(AP) -
THE NUMBERS: Honda Motor Co. sales were up a modest 1 percent in June, the only major automaker to show an increase. The Detroit Three, Toyota Motor Corp. and Nissan Motor Co. all reported double-digit declines, and the market dropped 18 percent overall.

THE REASON: Industry analysts say Honda has the right products — popular fuel-efficient models like the Fit, Civic and Accord. Plus it has factories that are so flexible they can build multiple models on the same assembly line. Honda says it built fewer Acura TL luxury cars, which aren't selling well, and instead shifted production at an Ohio factory to Accords.

THE FUTURE: All automakers hope to have more small cars to meet demand because gas prices aren't expected to drop anytime soon. They're also scrambling to make factories more flexible to make multiple models.

Honda's Flexibility Shows Widening Gap Over Toyota

By Naoko Fujimura and Alan Ohnsman July 7 (Bloomberg) --
Stan Bell, a 61-year-old retired government worker from Clinton, Michigan, is the reason Honda Motor Co. may widen its stock-market lead over Toyota Motor Corp.

After wrecking his Accord sedan, Bell returned to the dealer to replace it with a Civic EX, Honda's most fuel- efficient gasoline vehicle.

``With this economy people have to be careful with pennies,'' he said. Bell had to pay the sticker price of about $22,000 and wait a few days for the dealer to take delivery of the 36 miles-per-gallon car.

As the average U.S. price of regular gasoline has risen 39 percent in a year -- to $4.10 a gallon, according to the AAA motor club -- Honda's flexible North American factories have been running at full tilt. Japan's second-biggest automaker is shifting production from trucks to automobiles to keep up with surging demand for fuel-efficient vehicles, while larger Toyota is closing its San Antonio plant for 14 days between now and the end of October to reduce output of Tundra pickups.

It might take Toyota a year or more to convert the truck plant to auto production, said Michael Robinet, an analyst with automotive consulting firm CSM Worldwide Inc. in Northville, Michigan. Toyota's pickups, unlike Honda's, don't share basic design structures with its cars.....

Toyota is the world's most efficient auto manufacturer, churning out vehicles with the least manufacturing cost per vehicle. For years, I have been puzzling why Honda hasn't caught up to Toyota's efficiency. Now I know why. Honda is sacrificing efficiency with flexibility which helps the auto maker a lot during these turbulence times.

Arrow Honda/Acura July Sales

Honda/Acura Announces July 2008 Sales

American Honda Reports July Sales
Fit sets another all-time sales record; Honda car sales rise 6.7% for July record
08/01/2008 - TORRANCE, Calif. -

American Honda Motor Co., Inc., posted July total vehicle sales of 138,744, a daily-selling-rate basis* decline of 9.2 percent compared to July 2007 results.

Honda Division posted July sales of 125,916, a decline of 8.2 percent versus July 2007. The Fit sold an all-time record of 12,266, up 78.5 percent. Civic Hybrid broke its previous July record, set in 2006, with sales up 27.4 percent to 3,440, while the Accord increased 2.8 percent to 41,382.

"The uncertainties in the market have been quite profound in the past few weeks," said Dick Colliver, executive vice president of sales for American Honda. "We are adjusting our production to meet the rapidly changing needs of buyers and are confident these changes will provide the needed inventory as we move forward."

Honda total car sales of 82,976 increased by 6.7 percent to achieve a new July record. Honda light truck sales saw a decrease of 27.8 percent to 42,940.

The Acura Division posted sales of 12,828, a decrease of 17.7 percent* compared to July 2007. The division's all-new TSX continues to perform well with July sales up 15.9 percent to 3,474.

*The daily selling rate is calculated with 26 days for July 2008 and 24 days for 2007. All percentages reflect the daily selling rate.

Acura Announces July Sales Results
08/01/2008 - TORRANCE, Calif. -

"In a time when fuel economy is paramount, the all-new TSX delivers,"
said Dick Colliver, executive vice president of sales. "The 2009 TSX offers plenty of performance, customer relevant technology and luxury features, while also providing excellent fuel mileage."

Further evidence that four-cylinder power and smart packaging are in high demand, the turbocharged RDX crossover SUV set a new July sales record of 1,384 units. The TL performance luxury sedan posted sales of 3,961 vehicles making it the top selling Acura for July while RL luxury performance sedan sales tallied 532 units. Acura light truck sales for July were led by the MDX luxury SUV with 3,477 units. Acura year-to-date** sales are 90,742 units, down 14.8 percent versus 2007 sales.

” The TL performance luxury sedan posted sales of 3,961 vehicles making it the top selling Acura for July…”

What’s the difference between best-selling and top selling?

Unfortunately, the new Pilot debuted @ a most inopportune time.
It is hard to gauge whether its sales are due to the market for that type of vehicle being down or its lack of appeal. Add on top of that the reduction in production ... my guess would be a lot of potential buyers realized that they did not need something that large & got a CR-V.

Yea, I guess we can’t draw any conclusion yet with the Pilot until we see how others in the segment are doing. Btw, I saw a black one from behind today and thought it looks good.

Best-selling…top-selling I thought they mean the same..lol

I blame it partially on the current gas prices. But the clumsy styling definitely has something to do with it. I sincerely hope Pilot sales tank so they will never ever consider releasing something so retarded looking again.
