Looks a *lot* better than the prius...and I finally saw a Civic sedan on the road and they look pretty good, I didn't care much for the pictures though. This thing looks sweet though.

Looks like an Intrepid rear ended a Jdm Odyssey. But this is what the Us hybrid buyers are looking for, something wacko looking that gets them attention for buying a hybrid.

Hydrogen-Powered Honda FCX to go Into Production

Several months ago at the Tokyo Motor Show, Honda introduced a wind cheating, earth friendly, fuel cell-powered concept called the FCX. Several weeks ago in Detroit at the NAIAS, Honda quietly announced that they would build a production vehicle based on the FCX concept. With the advancements they've made for this latest generation of hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicles, a production model will be ready within three to four years. It will probably be available only to a small group of alternative fuel loyalists and devotees, and likely only in Japan or possibly California where Honda previously introduced the FCX-V4 of which a portion of 30 examples found their way into government fleets (see new vehicle preview section of this website for January 16, 2003: 2003 Honda FCX-V4 Preview) and at least one famiy (see automotive news section of this website for July 3, 2005: Honda Tests Hydrogen-Powered FCX with Private Family for First Time), but the packaging solutions Honda has developed for hydrogen storage as well as their clever Home Energy Station, alleviating the need for widespread hydrogen refilling stations on the road, point the way around many of the obstacles, or detours, on the road to the hydrogen highway and zero-emission culture of the future.

I like the Home Energy Station (HES) concept!

Natural gas is a whole lot cheaper than gasoline at the moment, but not sure how the cost structure of an HES would become economically feasible to warrant one.

Probably the rich clean-energy junkies will be the demographic. Which isn't bad.

The HES concept is nice yeah. But then is it worth making one for every house vs. one central station (i.e. gas station).

Post Update...

From Leftlanenews...

Honda over the past week held a demonstration drive of a working version of the FCX Concept fuel cell vehicle, which was first previewed nearly a year ago. Initial sales of a totally new fuel cell vehicle based on this concept model is to begin in 2008 in Japan and the U.S., the automaker announced today. The FCX features a newly developed compact, high-efficiency Honda FC Stack as well as a low-floor, low-riding, short-nose body. It has 129 horsepower, 189 pound-feet of torque, a range of 356 miles, and a top speed of 100 mph.

Honda: FCX Clarity news **2009 World Green Car of the Year (page 1)**

2009 Honda FCX Clarity breaks cover

November14
Honda today unveiled the FCX Clarity fuel cell vehicle at the Los Angeles Auto Show, announcing plans to begin limited sales of the vehicle in summer 2008. The FCX Clarity is a hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicle based on the new Honda V Flow fuel cell platform. It is powered by a compact fuel cell stack producing no emissions.

"The FCX Clarity is a shining symbol of the progress we've made with fuel cell vehicles and of our belief in the promise of this technology," said Tetsuo Iwamura, American Honda president and CEO. "Step by step, with continuous effort, commitment and focus, we are working to overcome obstacles to the mass-market potential of zero-emissions hydrogen fuel cell automobiles."

The car has a range of 270 miles and fuel economy exceeding that of any similarly-sized hybrid or gasoline vehicle. Fuel is stored in a 5,000-psi tank.

The FCX Clarity's only emission is water. Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions come only from the production of hydrogen, which varies by source, However, Honda says the CO2 emissions involved in making hydrogen from natural gas are less than half that of a conventional gasoline vehicle.

Availability

American Honda plans to lease the FCX Clarity to a limited number of retail consumers in Southern California with the first deliveries taking place in summer 2008.

Full details of the lease program will be set closer to launch, but current plans call for a three-year lease term with a price of $600 per month, including maintenance and collision insurance. American Honda is also developing a service infrastructure for the cars.

When the FCX Clarity requires periodic maintenance, customers will schedule a visit with their local Honda dealer. American Honda will transport the vehicle to their fuel cell service facility, located in the greater Los Angeles area, where all required work will be performed. At the completion of the work, the customer will pick up their car from the dealer.

How It Works

The FCX Clarity utilizes Honda's V Flow stack in combination with a new compact and efficient lithium ion battery pack and a single hydrogen storage tank to power the vehicle's electric drive motor. The fuel cell stack operates as the vehicle's main power source.

Additional energy captured through regenerative braking and deceleration is stored in the lithium ion battery pack, and used to supplement power from the fuel cell, when needed.

Honda says it has shed 400 lbs from previous fuel cell designs. What's more, the company says the entire fuel cell system is now comparable in size (volume) to a gasoline engine setup.

uh, this isn't news. They've had FCX's in service since 2002.

And last time I looked, all cars on the road today are basically bombs on wheels...

fuel...check.
enclosed vessel...check.

All we need is heat for ignition, and BOOM!

don't you pretty much get a background check when you buy any car considering you need a license or ID (which means you are "filed" somewhere) and insurance (which does a check of your credit and driving history)?
