Ferrari is working on a track only version of LaFerrari hybrid sports car for their most exclusive customers. Just like the FXX, which was based on the Enzo, the then fastest Ferrari, the LaFerrari XX will be based on the LaFerrari, which is the fastest and most powerful Ferrari ever to enter production.

The news was confirmed by Antonello Coletta, head of Ferrari’s Sporting Activity Department. He was in Australia recently, where he revealed this information. He also said that the car will come out in the month of January or February next year.

The first question that many would have thought of, is will the LaFerrari XX be more powerful than the LaFerrari? Not really. Considering that the LaFerrari itself produces 963 PS and 900 Nm torque, LaFerrari XX will deliver almost the same power and torque, but being a track only sportscar, it will be tuned for better performance in such a scenario. Coletta said that the power delivery will be more or less the same, but handling will be totally different.

When asked whether the car spotted on test recently, which featured larger wings on the front and rear along with an air-intake on the roof, was the LaFerrari XX itself? Coletta said no, it was not the LaFerrari XX nor it was a test mule for the future Ferrari car, it was just a laboratory prototype used to improve their knowledge.

A test mule of the track-only LaFerrari XX was spotted on the Nürburgring for the first time.

A couple of days ago we heard Ferrari's head of Sporting Activity Department confirming plans for a track-focused variant of the LaFerrari and now a test mule of the car in question has been spied on the 'Ring. Slated to be unveiled in January or February 2015 as a very limited edition model, the LaFerrari XX’s engine will provide a very loud soundtrack according to our spy photographers who also said it was the fastest car they saw in recent years.

The test mule spotted featured an unpainted carbon fiber body and most likely had plastic windows to shave off excess weight. Although not visible on this car, the LaFerrari XX will most definitely come with a few aerodynamic bits and pieces which should make it even faster around the corners.

How fast? We heard the LaFerrari XX has posted an unofficial Nürburgring lap time of 6 minutes and 30 seconds, making it a lot quicker than the current record holder, the Radical SR8LM which lapped the track in 6 minutes and 48 seconds back in 2009.

The track-only ‘XX’ version of Maranello’s hybrid hypercar, the LaFerrari, will be launched at the firm’s World Finals in Abu Dhabi in early December, company insiders have confirmed to Top Gear.

And we’re told most extreme production-derived car in Ferrari’s history will make a monstrous 1050bhp, some 100bhp more than the road-going version. Yep, that's about 50 per cent more power than a 2014 F1 car. Sheesh.

Though it was rumoured the race-spec LaFerrari could use an F1-issue turbo V6, TG is told the XX will employ the same powertrain as the road car – so a naturally aspirated V12 and electric motor – but bumped up to a total output of around 1050bhp, 60-something horsepowers north of the similarly track-only McLaren P1 GTR. It seems that extra power has been found from the V12 rather than the electric modules, which are said to produce the same 161bhp as before.

So it’ll be biblically powerful, but won’t be road legal. Expect the full gamut of track goodies: racing rubber, yet-more-extreme active aero, and a race-spec, bucket-seated cockpit. The, ahem, standard LaFerrari manages 0-62mph in 2.9 seconds, and 124mph in under seven. Just imagine how brutally fast the XX will be.

The XX will qualify for no existing race series (so no XX vs P1 GTR paint-swapping, sadly), but – like its predecessor, the Enzo-based FXX – will get track time at Ferrari’s Corse Clienti programme of eight annual races around the world.

Because, like the FXX, the LaFerrari XXs will be kept at Maranello and maintained by Ferrari’s technical team. “We don’t want them going to collectors,” admitted our insider. “We want them to be driven.”

No prices have been revealed, but our sources suggested the LaFerrari XX’s tag was in the same ballpark as the £2m that McLaren asks for the P1 GTR. The Enzo FXX was limited to a run of 30 cars (the last, of course, being Michael Schumacher’s old company car), and the LaFerrari XX is expected to be produced in similarly limited numbers.

As it won’t wear a licence plate, the LaFerrari XX won’t qualify for TG’s Power Laps board, but – considering Mr Schu’s FXX got round in a blistering 1m10.7 – just how quick do you reckon it could lap our test track? Under a minute? Surely not…

Earlier in the year a Ferrari exec confirmed that development had started on an ‘XX’ experimental version of the LaFerrari supercar, and soon after prototypes of the track-only special were spotted at some of Europe’s top race tracks, including Germany’s Nürburgring where onlookers said it needed just 6:35 for a single lap. Now, a more advanced prototype has been spotted testing at Ferrari’s Fiorano circuit and is likely to be wearing the modifications destined for the final version.

This is because the LaFerrari XX (name yet to be confirmed) is due to be revealed very soon, possibly as early as the Finali Mondiali event taking place at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina circuit from December 3-6. The event is Ferrari’s annual celebration of the end of the motorsport season and brings together all of its separate sporting divisions, including the XX program.

The latest prototype is heavily camouflaged but we can see that it has been made even wider at the front than the standard LaFerrari. There is also a new splitter up front and at the rear we can see a pair of fixed spoilers, one at either side of the car. This is in addition to the standard LaFerrari’s rear wing. The rear diffuser has also been modified and a pair of exhaust tips fitted instead of the regular quad-pipe design.

The LaFerrari XX is expected to benefit from the same 6.3-liter V-12 and twin motor-generator HY-KERS hybrid setup from the standard LaFerrari, but with output turned up to around 1,050 horsepower instead of 950 hp. By comparison, McLaren’s rival to the LaFerrari XX, the P1 GTR, packs a 986-hp punch.

The extra power is said to have come from further fine-tuning of the V-12. A previous spy video of the LaFerrari XX revealed a much more aggressive enginenote than that of the standard car. But more power is only part of the story as Ferrari is more focused on the handling of the car. Look for the LaFerrari XX to benefit from some weight-saving measures, improved aerodynamics (confirmed by the latest shots), slick tires, new suspension, and revised electronic stability and traction systems.

While the LaFerrari is being produced in a limited run of 499 cars, all of which have been sold, the LaFerrari XX will likely add a couple of dozen units to that tally. The XX cars are typically kept and maintained by Ferrari, with owners flying in to various race tracks around the world to drive the cars on the track and provide feedback to engineers working on the next generation of Ferrari road cars.

The XX cars fall under Ferrari’s Corse Clienti customer racing program and are offered exclusively to the brand’s most loyal customers, although it’s not unusual to find XX cars for sale on the used car market. As the cars are all designed for track-use only, it means they can’t be registered for the road.
