Selling the Viper line is a huge mistake in my opinion. This is a brand name known around the world with mostly positive connotation and it's an image enhancer. It takes so much work to get to that point....

ACR hits 7:22 on the Nurburgring

http://www.motortrend.com/av/feature...deo/index.html

Very good driving, though with a few misshifts.... I believe the driver is from Team Zakspeed, who prepares race-spec Vipers that happened to win the 24 hours of Nurburgring.

That thing bottomed out 100 times though. It was like listening to nails on a chalkboard whenever it happened.

They'd have nothing recognizable if the sold it....besides the Challenger, which most likely is just a fad.

Actually I read in a tuner magazine that the 8.3 and newer engines have variable valve timing I think..... but its weird. Its cam-in-cam. No variable lift though, but who cares, the thing is pretty much "in VTEC" the moment you stomp on the gas. VTEC is just meant to maximize the best of both worlds.... get good fuel economy and provide a nice boost in power when you really need it.

Its kinda sad though.... the Viper is an icon. Vipers made me feel funny inside ever since I saw them way back when.

yeah, I imagine it was a huge difference. Nonetheless, it is a production car, and the Pilot Sport Cups are the tires that it comes with out of the factory. I was always interested when people talked about a bare bones, stripped down Z06 with R-Compounds, downforce modifications, etc. but it is what it is, good job Dodge/SRT!

I've never driven a C6 Z06 but I've driven a couple of Vettes with the Goodyear F1 Supercar tires. they're fucking terrible, I don't know if the runflat versions can possiblly be any better.

Its a production car designed for the racetrack. The tires cant handle any water and really shouldnt be considered a street tire.
There is a guy that auto-x's at a lot of the events i go to and his C5 Z06 ran almost a full 9 seconds (larger course) faster in the last auto x with the pilot sport cup tires over the stock goodyears. (ran the laps same day)

wasn't the point of VTEC to provide that low end torque under VTEC range and then provide high HP in VTEC range

that too... but its the same principle. Diesels have a ton of torque at the low end which is why they have such great fuel economy. Either way I'm pretty sure in an apples to apples comparison, two exactly-the-same spec cars, except one is on cam all the time (like Toda's "VTEC killer" cams) and a car with normal VTEC, the full on-cam car would be faster and use more gas than the other car.

With the enormous 8.3L of engine displacement, there shouldn't be any lack of low end torque even without the help of VTEC. The major obstacle is to make the engine spin fast, and to have a high redline rpm (7000+rpm). Balancing all these big and heavy moving piston parts is very critical and difficult at high rpm's.

9 second difference at an Auto-X course? What was it, the Disneyland parking lot? :P

You are right, but balancing an 8.3 L motor is going to be tough. Dodge doesn't have the money to figure all that stuff out and balance every motor.

Dodge: Viper news **Chrysler Commits to Keeping Brand Going (page 3)**

Press release...

The 2009 Dodge Viper SRT10® is the ultimate American sports car and the icon of the Dodge brand.

For 2009, the Dodge Viper SRT10 offers the outrageous power expected, with an 8.4-liter 600-horsepower (450 kW) V-10 engine contributing to blistering acceleration (0-60 mph in less than four seconds, 0-100-0 mph in the low 12-second range), setting an American sports car benchmark.

A dramatic hood featuring a larger, more efficient hood scoop for air induction and functional hood louvers to facilitate a greater cooling effect enhance Viper’s bold, aggressive looks. Viper design hallmarks, including deep-cut side scallops, swept-back fenders, lowered hood lines and the signature Dodge crosshair grille remain.

The 2009 Dodge Viper SRT10 will be available in four new exterior colors: Anaconda Green Pearl Coat, Graphite Metallic Clear Coat, Diamond Black Pearl Coat and Viper Bright White Clear Coat.

“With the 2009 Dodge Viper SRT10, we’re carrying on the proud tradition of very powerful artillery for sports-car enthusiasts,” said Kipp Owen, Director – Street and Racing Technology (SRT) Engineering, Chrysler LLC. “With 600 horsepower, 560 lb.-ft. of torque and 0-to-60 performance in less than four seconds, the 2009 Dodge Viper SRT10 remains the benchmark for the ultimate American sports car.”

I would rather the viper. I see vettes all the time, and Zo6's are commonplace around here.

Nothing snaps my head faster than a well maintained RT/10. I'd go for the new viper in a heartbeat. The newer gen coupes are stunning in person.

great.. it looks like the same viper we've seen the past 10 years.. right? lol.

I mean its a nice looking car, but it doesnt look like there's been any kind of evolution on this design.

I swear, I think it was a first gen Viper GTS blue with the white stripes, and it still was the meanest sounding / looking car I've seen in a while. The Viper has the best head turning capability and a rawness to it. Much more than any Corvette. Not to say a Corvette isn't a better driver or anything, I'm just talking about presence.

Vipers are serious business...its your go-to fast raw crazy car in your garage...and this is very appealing to me and many others.

the corvette, even z06, is more civilized in that its actually comfortable, its commonplace as said above, and has a smooth design that doesn't yell out crazy raw car...now this would be more appealing to others, but if you want comfort, wouldn't you just drive your sedan in the garage, not your sports car??

but the ZR1 is a different beast, it make 505at the wheels!!! (what z06 has at crank) it may very well be more "raw and crazy" than any Viper!! (commonplace comfort included! lol).

If you guys want to talk about cars > cars. I would say Viper > ZR1. Viper gets 13 mpg city / 22 mpg highway. ZR1 gets 14 mpg city / 20 mpg highway. Therefore in an endurance run with the same driver. The Viper wins

It's amazing how many people seem to choose the inferior car all the time. The new ACR is a better car then the ZR1. Don't believe me, just check the lap times for both at the Ring. Plus, the ACR is tens of thousands of dollars cheaper then the ZR1.

Thats mainly due to the short gearing in the ZR1 as opposed to the vipers granny gear. The vette runs circles around it in every day driving and functionality(much larger luggage space) and at the track. And knowing GM I bet it gets better than 20 on the hwy (considering my neighbor gets 30-31 out of his C6 on the HWY)-
