Love that blue

Still a wonderful car. And I didn't know it held the record for most torque in a n/a production car.

Post 2014 Dodge SRT Viper ACR

Press release...

It’s difficult, but yes, you can improve the ultimate hand-built American exotic supercar. For a blueprint, look no further than the Dodge Viper ACR Concept.

Ready to strike at the track, the Dodge Viper ACR Concept sports an aggressive carbon fiber front splitter and a competition rear wing. Many development hours in the wind tunnel achieved balance between the wing and stanchions, as well as how these elements work in conjunction with the front splitter to maximize downforce. Carbon fiber dive planes on the front fascia and hood heat extractors flanking the front fenders pour on even more aero downforce and aggressive styling cues. All of these lightweight carbon fiber elements work in unison to strike the perfect balance of maximum downforce for tight cornering and high speed maneuvers on the track.

The Dodge Viper ACR Concept races on satin black lightweight 19-inch front and rear wheels, with massive 15.4-inch Carbon Ceramic two-piece rotors with Brembo six-piston brakes. Brakes are kept to optimal temperature levels through carbon fiber brake duct openings in the front fascia. Differential cooler ducts rearward of the side windows supply fresh cool air to the differential for optimal performance. The signature ACR-style white paint is highlighted by a gloss black center stripe, accompanied by an offset Adrenaline Red stripe that flows from tip to tail, encompassing the competition spoiler with accented stanchion and end cap. The iconic heritage ACR side sill badge and Stryker front nose badge signify that this Viper is certainly a force to be recognized.

The race-inspired interior of the Dodge Viper ACR concept puts an emphasis on weight reduction for superior performance with unique styling cues that express its racing thoroughbred pedigree. Only the bare necessities remain as radio amplifier, speakers, carpet and NVH treatments have been removed to take advantage of every ounce. Carbon fiber virtually fills the cabin as every possible bezel has been replaced with this space-age lightweight material. Alcantara suede-wrapped steering wheel, shifter and seats provide ample grip to fully exercise its modified race suspension with razor sharp agility through the most demanding turns. A Header Red stripe that adorns the 12 o’clock position of the steering wheel provides an emotional connection to the exterior through the Adrenaline Red body stripe. Header Red accents carry over from the unique “Stryker” steering wheel badge to the iconic heritage “ACR” instrument panel badge with carbon fiber inlay, and are harmoniously joined by full interior accent stitching.

Post Dodge Introduces New Level Of Personalization For Viper

From here: Dodge Introduces New Level Of Personalization For Viper: Video

Having already addressed one of the Viper SRT’s key flaws, its overly optimistic pricing, Dodge has now alleviated another key issue hurting the car’s sales performance, the buying experience. Anyone dropping around 100 large on a car expects to be pampered, and they also expect to be able to personalize their car exactly how they want it.

That is why Dodge has now introduced an unprecedented level of exclusivity for Viper buyers, which includes a concierge-style service that gives them the opportunity to fully personalize their car, the ability to virtually follow along the build process, and an opportunity to visit the Viper’s the Conner Avenue Assembly Plant in Detroit.

The concierge service will be linked with a new Viper GTC model, which for the 2015 model year is priced from $94,995, or the same as the Viper GT. Not only does the Viper GTC have all of the same goodies as the Viper GT, such as Nappa and Alcantara trim, it also comes with an exclusive point of contact throughout the custom Viper build process.

From the time the order is placed in the system to the moment the car is delivered, a special ‘Viper Concierge’ will provide the buyer with behind-the-scenes stories and pictures about their car. For example, it takes between 140 and 160 hours to hand paint each Viper before it goes to assembly, and owners will get regular updates, including pictures of the meticulous paint process and each phase of the handcrafted assembly. Updates will come via a website which the buyer can log into.

But what about the unprecedented part? Well, to ensure that no two Viper GTCs look the same for any particular model year, a buyer won’t be able to order the same configuration as a previous buyer, even when it comes to color. Of course, there will be numerous variations available, as Dodge is offering up to 8,000 hand-painted exterior colors to choose from, 24,000 hand-painted custom stripes, 10 wheel options, 16 interior trims, six aero packages, and host of additional standalone options.

Dealers will start taking orders for the Viper GTC from February.
Now, if only Dodge would get around to adding some extra horses to the Viper’s current 645-hp rating, then we’re sure buyers would be lining up.

Post 2016 Dodge Viper ACR

Street legal...

The Dodge Viper American Club Racer has become the stuff of legend. The track-focused but street-legal machine was first launched in 1999 and by its second generation had already smashed the Nürburgring lap record for a production car with a time of 7:12.13, a feat surpassed only by the all-wheel-drive Nissan GT-R NISMO and Porsche 918 Spyder models.

Now we have a new Viper ACR to lust over, which Dodge is introducing for the 2016 model year, and you can bet it will be putting down even better numbers than its predecessor. In fact, Dodge CEO Tim Kuniskis calls it the “fastest street-legal Viper track car” the automaker has ever produced.

There’s no extra power on offer, which means the car’s 8.4-liter V-10 churns out the same 645 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque as the other Viper models, with drive sent rearward via a six-speed manual gearbox. Instead, the engineers focused on honing the aerodynamics, brakes and tires—a recipe designed to carry on the Viper ACR’s lap-time busting reputation that's made it a legend on race tracks all around the world.

Using knowledge gained in racing the Viper GTS-R in events like the American Le Mans Series and United SportsCar Championship, Dodge’s engineering team developed an aero package for the Viper ACR that produces nearly a ton of downforce at 177 mph, or around three times the downforce of the Viper TA 2.0 package. The package includes an adjustable rear wing, a rear diffuser, a new hood, front splitter and dive planes. Many of the elements are made from carbon fiber to keep weight down.

The brakes, sourced from Brembo, also utilize carbon. The setup uses 15.4-inch two-piece front rotors and 14.2-inch two-piece rear rotors. The front brakes use six-piston Brembo calipers while the rear brakes use four-piston calipers. These pizza tray-sized brakes reside in a set of 19-inch wheels, which are shod with massive Kumho Ecsta V720 high-performance tires (295/25 front, 355/30 rear) designed exclusively for the car.

Being a track machine, the suspension also received a thorough work out. Aluminum bodied, double-adjustable (for rebound and compression) coil-over Bilstein race shocks are designed specifically for the Viper ACR and work in conjunction with a lower ride height (with 3.0 inches of adjustment) compared to the stock Viper. Spring rates are also up, coming in at 600 lbs/in at the front and at 1,300 lbs/in at the rear, which is more than double the suspension stiffness of the Viper TA model.

There’s also more negative camber and the electronic stability system, which can be completely switched off, tuned to take into account the extra grip available. Dodge says the car is capable of sustaining more than 1.5 g on high-speed turns due to the combined chassis and aerodynamic improvements. One final mechanical mod is the new, higher-flow exhaust tips.

Beyond the mechanical mods, what else can Viper ACR buyers expect? Well, there is suede-like Alcantara lining the instrument cluster hood, lower instrument panel and door armrest panels, and there's also a custom steering wheel wrapped in more Alcantara and accented with a stripe. The seats are also unique to the ACR and carry Alcantara inserts, and buyers have the choice of silver or red accent stitching throughout the cabin. Finally, special badging also sets the ACR apart from other Viper models.

Production of the 2016 Dodge Viper ACR commences in the third quarter of the year, and buyers will be able to select the Viper’s ‘1 of 1’ personalization option where no two cars will be alike for any given model year. Key rivals include the Chevrolet Corvette Z06, Nissan GT-R NISMO and Porsche 911 GT3 RS.

Pricing will be announced closer to the sales launch this fall.

Post 1-Of-1 Personalization Program Expanded

From here: Dodge Viper 1-Of-1 Personalization Program Expanded, Matte Finish Now Available

Dodge’s ultra-exclusive ‘1-of-1’ personalization program for its Viper supercar has proven so popular that for the 2016 model year the American go-fast brand is adding even more options, one of which is a striking matte finish available for most of the exterior colors. It means the Viper is now available in more than 50 million unique configurations, made up from the more than 16,000 unique paint color options and more than 48,000 unique stripe combinations.

Last year’s Viper Time Attack Anodized Carbon Special Edition was actually the first model to feature the new matte finish. Normally, the body panels are sanded with a fine 1,000-grit paper and then polished to a near mirror finish. To create the new matte finish, each panel is also sanded a second time before the matte clear paint is applied.

Some additional options include satin chrome or satin black finishes for the badges and fuel cap, giving the car an even more sinister look. As mentioned above, stripes can also be added. These are all painted by hand—unlike most cars that use decals—and add about 18 hours to the 145-160-hour overall paint process for the Viper.

Dodge will start accepting orders for the 2016 Viper in July. Remember, no two Vipers ordered with the 1-of-1 personalization program are allowed to be alike for any single model year, not even when it comes to their color, so if you have a particular combination in mind you had better head to your local Dodge dealercome July and lock in your preference.
Ooo, pretty in matte white...!

Production of the hand-built 2016 Dodge Viper ACR begins in Detroit in the third quarter of 2015
July 17, 2015 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - The next chapter in the history of the ultimate street-legal, track-focused, hand-built American supercar begins with the return of the new 2016 Dodge Viper ACR.

Certified for public roads and engineered to wring every last hundredth of a second out of road course lap times, the 2016 Dodge Viper ACR combines the latest in aerodynamic, braking and tire technology – a recipe designed to carry on the ACR’s lap-time busting reputation that has made it a legend on race tracks around the world.

“The Viper has always been more of a street-legal race car than a track-capable streetcar, and the new 2016 Dodge Viper ACR is the fastest street-legal Viper track car ever,” said Tim Kuniskis, President and Chief Executive Officer – Dodge Brand and SRT Brand, FCA – North America. “Our goal is to arm our enthusiasts with the ultimate Viper track car to dominate road courses around the world.”

The SRT engineering team that developed the 2016 Dodge Viper ACR is well-stocked with members who race their own cars, as well as learning from the factory-based racing Viper GTS-R that competed in the American Le Mans Series and IMSA United SportsCar Championship from 2012-2014, capturing the GTLM class driver and team championships in 2014. For the new Viper ACR, the team focused its efforts on three areas: aerodynamics, chassis and tires to maximize grip, producing never-seen-before handling capabilities and unprecedented lap times.

Ultimate aerodynamic performance

The 2016 Dodge Viper ACR sports a standard front splitter, lower dive planes and a 1,776 mm-wide adjustable, dual element rear wing, which is 54 percent larger (in top surface area) than the TA (Time Attack) 2.0 and helps to provide 1,101 pounds of downforce at 150 miles per hour (mph) and 1,533 pounds of downforce at 177 mph top speed.

The 2016 Viper’s available Extreme Aero Package produces the highest aerodynamic downforce of any production car. During on-track testing, SRT development engineers have experienced unprecedented downforce numbers of 1,200+ pounds at 150 mph and 1,700+ pounds at 177 mph top speed, along with 12 percent more downforce over the base ACR on straightaways and 21 percent more downforce during aggressive cornering.

The Extreme Aero Package includes a huge (1,876-mm wide) adjustable dual-element rear wing – which is 62 percent larger (in top surface area) than TA 2.0 – rear carbon fiber diffuser, unique SRT hood with removable louvers, detachable extension for the front splitter and four dive planes. The Extreme Aero rear wing, specifically designed for airflow around the Viper’s body, stands taller, sits further rearward and features unique end-plates and gurney lip to produce maximum downforce while minimizing straight line drag. The Extreme Aero Package delivers more than three times the downforce of the Viper TA 2.0 Package.

The rear carbon fiber diffuser extends forward of the rear axle. It includes six removable strake extensions, designed to rub against the track surface for increased straight-line stability and optimized downforce. Removable hood louvers over the front tires reduce air pressure in front wheel wells to provide additional downforce. The detachable front splitter extension and dive planes work with the rear aerodynamic treatment to provide outstanding grip and balanced performance on the track.

Ultimate brake performance

Track duty can punish the brakes. The 2016 Dodge Viper ACR features new Brembo® Carbon Ceramic Matrix brakes for optimum braking performance with unprecedented brake fade resistance, and greater handling capability through reduced un-sprung weight. The system uses 390-millimeter (15.4-inch) two-piece front rotors and 360-millimeter (14.2-inch) two-piece rear rotors. Front brakes use six-piston Brembo® calipers while the rear brakes use four-piston calipers.

The new Carbon Ceramic Matrix brakes have the largest brake pad area ever on Viper. The brakes work in conjunction with ABS and ESC specifically tuned for ACR to take into account the extra grip provided by the additional aero and specifically designed Kumho® tires. Detachable front brake ducts provide additional cooling to the brake calipers for optimum track performance.

Tire, Chassis Combo Keeps Viper ACR Glued to the Road

The 2016 Dodge Viper ACR is fitted with Kumho® Ecsta V720 high-performance tires designed specifically for the car with unique tread pattern and compounds for front and rear. In testing, the new tires produce laps times that are 1.5 seconds faster than off-road only race tires.

Low-profile front tires measure 295/25/19 and are mounted on wider 11-inch wide wheels and when combined with the 355/30/19 rear tires provide the largest combined tire patch available on any production car. On the sidewall of the new tires is a unique raised ACR logo.

The Viper ACR’s ABS and five-mode Electronic Stability Control system (Full-on, Sport, Track, Rain, Full-off modes) are specifically tuned for the car to take into account the extra grip offered by the extreme aerodynamic and tire package.

Aluminum bodied, double-adjustable coil-over Bilstein race shocks are designed specifically for the Viper ACR and work in conjunction with ride height adjustment for optimal control of weight transfer and handling performance. Each shock provides independent 10-way rebound and compression adjustability. The suspension package also provides more than 3 inches of ride height adjustment.

Front springs are rated at 600 lbs./in. and rear springs at 1,300 lbs./in., more than double the suspension stiffness of the Viper TA model. With unique race alignment and 1.4 degrees more negative camber than the entry SRT model, the 2016 Dodge Viper ACR is capable of sustaining more than 1.5 g on high-speed turns due to the combined chassis and aerodynamic improvements.

“This car is not a 1-3 lap track special. You can run the car at the track all day, and the performance doesn’t fall off,” added Kuniskis.

Awe-inspiring V-10 Powertrain

At the heart of the 2016 Viper ACR is the handcrafted, all-aluminum 8.4-liter V-10 overhead-valve engine, rated at 645 horsepower and 600 lb.-ft. of torque – the most torque of any naturally aspirated sports-car engine in the world. Unique exhaust tips have been added to the side-mounted exhaust pipes to provide reduced exhaust pressure. All Vipers are engineered to withstand severe track duty in ambient temperatures of 100 degrees Fahrenheit with a professional driver. Power reaches the pavement through the standard Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual transmission.

ACR-exclusive Interior Appointments

The instrument panel cluster hood, lower instrument panel and door armrest panels of the race-inspired interior are wrapped in unique Alcantara suede. A new, ACR-exclusive Alcantara wrapped high-grip steering wheel with color racing stripe and unique badging sets the ACR apart from other production models. New high-grip seats also carry the Alcantara inserts, while the unique dash plaque is finished in carbon fiber. Customers can choose between silver or Header Red accent stitching throughout the interior.

‘1 of 1’ Viper Program Offers One-of-a-Kind Street-Legal Race Car

Applying Viper’s exclusive ‘1 of 1’ customization program to Viper ACR allows customers to have more than 25 million build combinations to create their one-of-a-kind Snake from the ground up. With 8,000 exterior color options, 24,000 custom stripe colors, 11 wheel options, 16 interior trims and seven aero packages, three brake packages and four suspension options there are more than 25 million ways for buyers to customize their one-of-a-kind Dodge Viper.

Hand-built in Detroit at the Conner Avenue Assembly Plant; the 2016 Dodge Viper ACR goes on sale in third quarter 2015.

ACR History

The original Dodge Viper ACR was produced for the 1999 model year and was based off of the second generation coupe. This model had suspension and engine enhancements focused on maximizing performance in road racing and autocross environments. Horsepower was bumped from 450 to 460 hp via a unique air filter and smooth air intake hoses. Curb weight was reduced by more than 50 pounds by stripping the audio system and removing other non-essential items such as the fog lamps. The new stiffer, adjustable suspension removed another 14 pounds. This model also had an "ACR" badge and 20-spoke BBS wheels.

The second version of the Viper ACR was based off of the fourth generation coupe and was built during the 2008-2010 model years.

The 2008/2009 Viper ACR maintained the standard Viper’s 600 hp and 560 lbs.-ft. of torque, while adding aerodynamic, brake and suspension upgrades to the already potent supercar. One development goal was 1,000 pounds of downforce at 150 mph with optimum aero balance – a target achieved through CFD and wind-tunnel testing. Unique coil-over shocks allowed height changes and were step adjustable for compression and rebound.

Spring and anti-roll-bar rates were increased and the ACR was fitted with forged aluminum wheels and track-ready race tires. The new wheels and tires combined with a new two-piece brake rotor system shaved approximately 40 pounds from a base Viper. An additional 40 pound savings (for a total of 80) was possible when ordering the Hard Core Package which removed the audio system, trunk carpet and sound insulation. The 2008 Viper ACR proved its ultimate performance formula by setting a new track record at the famous 12.9-mile Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit in Germany with an elapsed time of 7:22.1.

For the 2010 model year, the Viper ACR was upgraded further with a redesigned rear wing gurney and end plates to further optimize aerodynamics and improve rear yaw downforce. In addition, a shorter fifth gear ratio improved high-speed acceleration and produced higher straightaway speeds. This improvement was a direct result of SRT’s experience at the Nürburgring Nordschleife where the team found that a revised gear ratio would have resulted in a higher speed capability and potentially a shorter elapsed time. In late September 2011, Dodge returned to the famed circuit and recaptured the production car lap record with a time of 7:12.13.

In late 2009, Dodge announced the non-street legal Viper ACR-X, targeted at the grassroots racer.

Combining the best performance attributes of the record-setting, street-legal Dodge Viper ACR and the safety equipment of championship-winning Viper Competition Coupe, Dodge produced the non-street legal racer that made its on-track debut in the summer of 2010 as part of Dodge Viper Cup spec racing series.

The 2010 Dodge Viper ACR-X was also powered by a 8.4-liter V10, equipped with factory-installed headers, forged pistons and a low-restriction exhaust system that produced 640 horsepower (40 more than production model).

The suspension also was tuned and upgraded specifically for on-track usage, while the weight was lightened by a full 160 pounds (versus the standard production Viper) to take on even the most challenging road course. Additional aerodynamic upgrades improved downforce, while enhancing stability and significantly improving grip in high-speed cornering.

Similar to the Dodge Viper Competition Coupe, the Viper ACR-X contained factory-installed safety equipment such as a factory-designed roll cage, fuel cell and race seat.

Unhappy Dodge Viper To Die In 2017

The United Auto Workers union representing employees at numerous automotive plants in the United States has ratified its contract with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles[NYSE:FCAU], and that means the end of the Dodge Viper.

As Allpar first noted, there is a small section in the 250-page agreement that relates to future production at the Conner Avenue Assembly plant in Detroit, which is responsible for the Dodge Viper supercar. The agreement, which you can access here, states that production of the current Viper at the plant will end in 2017 and that a successor is yet to be confirmed.

The Viper is probably ending production because it has seen very few sales. Only 760 were sold last year and this year looks no better. This may explain why we haven’t seen significant upgrades to the Viper’s hardware. It's a wise business decision not to put resources into a dying product.

We reached out to Dodge for a statement and here is the official reply: "As part of the agreement reached with the UAW, a letter was included that outlined potential future plans for all of our manufacturing facilities. You can find the contents of the letter in the contract highlighter at uaw.org: Get the highlights of the new proposed tentative agreement | UAW

The Connor Ave. Assembly Plant was included in that letter, which says “no future product as yet been identified beyond the product lifecycle.”

The Conner Avenue plant has been the Viper's home since its debut in 1992, and we doubt production would move elsewhere.

Lesson 1: union is bad for business and the employees. It should only exist in a Communist country. They are not different from politicians, they say collective bargaining is for the good for all employees and in reality it is only good for themselves.

Lesson 2 to Honda:

It's a wise business decision not to put resources into a dying product.

oops. so much for the "DCT's are faster than manuals" argument... video inside.

The new Viper ACR shattered race track records across the country, 13 in total. Randy Pobst ran 1.24 sec faster than the previous record holder, the 918 Spyder, at Laguna Seca.

Post 2016 Dodge Viper ACR White

Press release...

The old American drag racing maxim “The bullshit stops when you line ‘em up” has travelled round the world countless times over the years in many different languages.

It is no wonder then that benchmark lap times on renowned racetracks have become a universally accepted measure of a race or street cars performance in relation to its peers.

Hailing from the country that coined the famous saying, the Dodge Viper ACR (American Club Racer), with the ‘Extreme Aero Package’ currently wears the lap record crown for a street legal sports car with the following achievements:

• A lap time 1.2 seconds faster than the Porsche 918 Spyder at Laguna Seca.

• Record production car lap times at 13 US race circuits.

• „Extreme Aero Package“ for outstanding downforce

The 887 hp Porsche 918 Spyder is acknowledged as one of the fastest hypercars in the world. To underline this, the all-wheel-drive Porsche set a 1:29.89 min lap time at the Laguna Seca Raceway in California, beating the
1: 30.71 min time of the 916 hp McLaren P1 by a good 0.8 sec, with Laguna Seca specialist Randy Pobst behind the wheel of both.

Even more impressive however, is the blazing 1: 28.65 min lap subsequently recorded by Randy in the Dodge Viper ACR, a time that put 1.2 seconds of clean air between it and the high-tech hybrid Porsche. The Viper ACR could not have asked for a more glorious baptism of fire.

To turn it into the razor-sharp street legal track tool that was to eventually set street legal sportscar lap records at 12 more US race circuits, the standard Viper underwent a very focused development programme jointly devised by the Dodge/SRT engineers and the team running the Viper GTS-R race cars in the United Sportscar Championship.

Rather than aspiring to be king of the autobahn, the Dodge Viper ACR instead highlights its motorsport genes, central to which is the outstanding handling and grip generated both aerodynamically and mechanically. Thus, a maximum speed over 285 km/h was not a priority.

For reasons of durability and reliability, the 8.4-liter V10 engine only gained an extra 5 hp for a total of 654 hp, with torque remaining at 814 Nm.

Under the big front air intake is a racecar-sized splitter, which creates positive downforce over the front axle. Supplementing this is a pair of ‘dive planes’ on each side of the front apron that also direct boundary layer air aft.

A 1.88 metre wide race grade carbon-fibre rear wing with Gurney flap and lateral air guides sits high in the airflow for maximum effect. Adjustable for angle of attack, this big wing adds significant downforce and directional stability. Further aiding downforce as well as ground effect the new rear apron features a carbon-fibre underbody diffuser with six vertical fins. These aerodynamic aids create nearly a tonne of downforce at top speed!

Made specifically for the Viper ACR, the Kumho Ecsta V720-high-performance tyres in 295/25R19 and 355/30R19 sizes help the Viper ACR generate up to 1.5 g of lateral acceleration. Optimising their grip on the tarmac is the job of the fully adjustable Bilstein coil-over suspension, whose bounce and rebound control can be independently adjusted. Spring rates are significantly higher than stock, and the car runs more negative camber to aid turn-in and stability.

Creating extreme deceleration is the task of the lightweight carbon-ceramic Brembo brakes, which also help to reduce unsprung weight. These use 390 mm cross-drilled vented discs clamped by six-pot callipers in front, and 360 mm discs with four-pot callipers at the rear. The ABS and ESP software has been remapped to take all the new hardware as well as track driving parameters into account.

While the Viper ACR is aimed at serious trackday junkies its cabin is not as Spartan as a full-blown racecars, and is actually well appointed with the sports seats and most other surfaces covered in leather and Alcantara. Carbon-fibre accents adorn the dashboard, door panels, and the flat-bottomed sports steering wheel features an orange ‘this way up’ band at the 12 ‘o clock position.

According to the media, production of the Dodge Viper will cease in 2017. If that prediction comes to pass then the 2016 Viper ARC will likely remain the pinnacle model of the cars glorious 25-year history.

In Europe, Munich-based GeigerCars.de is proud to offer the Dodge Viper ACR with its motorsport derived ‘Extreme Aero Package’. So if owning one of these record-setting machines is on your bucket list, you should contact GeigerCars.de post-haste!
