Dodge: Police Vehicles news **Magnum and Charger Unveiled (page 2)**

Automotive News is confirming the rumor that Dodge will offer the Magnum in both the 6 and 8 configurations for police use. This will take on the Impala and Crown Victoria from the other 2 for the market...

Can you imagine a hemi Magnum chasing you down?

Junkster, who would love to be the cop in the magnum.

Makes sense. More power and room to store thugs, guns, radar dectectors, vests, donuts etc.

I'd drop Crown Vic's and Impala's completley in favour of this thing.

I still like the Crown Vics though......I don't see many departments opting for a wagon as a patrol car. Time may tell, but here they don't like them as much nor do they like the FWD Wimpalas.

Yeah, a Hemi Magnum would be a scary sight in the review, but at least you would see it sneaking up on you, unlike this thing.

Yes, the Italian police really do have one of these things.

yea, I read this awhile back... Can you imagine being chased by this thing? It probably doesn't even have to go to 6th to get to your speed.

Junkster, who also heard Swedish Highway patrols use 911's

Your only chance of escape if being chased by one of those?

Enzo.

Where do the Italian police get the $$$ for a Lambo cruiser anyway? Our cops can barely afford uniforms and these guys have a Lambo. Must have been donated.

Lambo donated the cruiser for publicity...

Did you know that there was talk about two years ago about Gucci or someone designing uniforms for the Italian military? It was funny, with ridiculously short mini skirts for women and form fitting pants for the men.

Only chance of escaping a Lambo cruiser? A little Fiat 500 that can squeeze between those itty bitty streets in europe.

Junkster, who wonders if there are any Vette Police cruisers

I believe Laval just up north of Montreal has at least one Firebird with a 350 as a chase car, for highway 440, which can resemble a raceway at times.

Actually, CHP (California Highway Patrol) uses LS1-engined Camaros for patrol duties on the highways to catch truckers. I have seen other Corvette patrol vehicles as well. There are all kinds of strange vehicle choices for patrol vehicles. The magnum would be a cool addition to the world of police cars.

Thanks lgregoire.

Guess where you find those?
Why France, of course! Their reasoning with chase cars defies any logic. They're just asking for trouble.

Unlike the somewhat standard cars that typically patrol the streets of NA, in Europe you can have just about any variety of car. 5 series BMWs and E class MBs usually are norm on the Autobahn in Germany painted the most hideous green color.

Actually, I heard that they also use Audi S6s and RS6s on the Autobahn too. Can you corroborate that, biker?

I checked on Google images this morning, and I didn't see no RS6, but I did see an E46 M3.

I was on the Autobahn for 6 hours yesterday and the only thing I saw was the hideous green E class MB cruisers (most of the time the SW version)

L.A. Times had an article about this...along with an artist rendering:

Some clips out of the article:

DaimlerChrysler is building powerful rear-wheel-drive cars with V-8 engines again — the kind preferred by police agencies — and wants back into the game. Its Dodge brand late this year will launch a police version of its new Magnum sport wagon. And rumors swirl about a police version of the upcoming Dodge Charger performance sedan.
The spacious Ford Crown Vic, however, is the only car certified for police work by two national testing agencies: the L.A. County Sheriff's Department and the Michigan State Police.

At least that's the case right now. Next month, the Dodge Magnum will undergo testing by L.A. sheriff's officials, and testing in Michigan will be performed in September. The tests rate cars for top speed, acceleration, braking, handling and the all-important ergonomics: how well police officers and their equipment fit inside.
Appie said Dodge would aim the 2005-model-year police Magnum at the special service segment, such as canine patrols and accident investigation teams. The vehicle's floor-mounted shifter interferes with installation of vital communications equipment needed in patrol cars and can't be relocated to the steering column until the next model year. The 2006 model will be suitable for all phases of police work, Appie said.
