Chevrolet: Cobalt/Cruze News **Diesel Engine Information (page 7)**

The difference between tests is that the Cobalt that tested acceptable in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety had side impact airbags, the test for the NHTSA didn't, big difference.
Unless a compact has side airbags I think its unlikely it will receive a 'good' rating in this test. The IHS also tested a Cobalt without side airbags and it had a poor rating. The Corolla was also tested with and without side airbags, acceptable with and poor without, Corolla also had a poor rear crash rating. The Civic wasn't tested for side impact by the IHS yet, buy it did have a poor rear crash rating.
So it does seem that the Cobalt's overall structure is good, but it seems Bob Lange overlooked that little detail between NHTSA's test and their laboratories that led to this result-poor press release.

The Cobalt is a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE step up from the Cavalier. It could explode randomly while driving, and it would still be a million times better.

My friends lil bro has an SS cobalt with intake, headers, exhaust, pulley and tune. That thing is a fucking terror. On the highway he hangs with my trans am about 2 cars back, then in 3rd i start pulling on him hard. But still it's impressive.

Could the fact that the SS comes with one exhaust tip mean that we will see faster, more powerful Cobalt versions than the SS? This looks almost too tame for an SS. Also the fact that the engine is supercharged is not showing on the price sheet.
I bet Chevy will offer a turbo Cobalt next year. Watch.

Look at the dealer's sticker. It is just the crappy NA ecotech 2.4 with a few add ons to make an "SS." Way to go GM, flood the world with garbage.

I remember when the car was first coming out GM had an SS package and an SS supercharged package but this is the first I've seen of it.
Found this on a Chevy dealer site
SS SEDAN
Available early 2005.
Key standard features include:
2.4L ECOTEC High-Output DOHC engine
Sport-Tuned suspension
Four-speed automatic transmission
All-speed Traction Control
17-inch polished aluminum wheels
Driver Information Center
CD player with automatic volume control
Cruise control
Air conditioning

Super Boosted Chevys: Supercharger kits push Cobalt to next stage - - By BOB GRITZINGER - - Source: Autoweek
We’ll admit to a growing fondness for Chevrolet’s Cobalt small car, especially the one that debuted this year as the 2006 Cobalt SS Supercharged coupe.
With performance suspension and 205 hp and 200 lb-ft of torque on tap from a lightweight aluminum overhead-cam 2.0-liter four-cylinder, the supercharged model is good. But if you really want something to get charged up about, stand by for Stage 1 and Stage 2 upgrades for the SS Supercharged (and Saturn Ion Red Line) due in early 2006.
Stage 1 adds revised fuel injectors and new engine calibration to pick up another 20 hp; Stage 2 increases boost via a smaller supercharger pulley (along with another engine recalibration job) to amp up the torque by about 20 lb-ft. The packages can be readily installed by the owner. Pricing will be announced in November at the Specialty Equipment Market Association show in Las Vegas.
We’ve driven the base supercharged cars, along with the Stage 1 and 2 upgrades, and while the Stage 1 noticeably increases power, the added torque in the Stage 2 package is worth the extra cost and effort. The added boost provides a substantial increase in power, especially at the low- and mid-rpm range where base and Stage 1 models need a downshift to prevent running short of breath.
Need more incentive? GM Performance hoss John Heinricy says he expects a 20 percent power boost from the Stage 2 kit “when all is said and done.” That’s about 246 hp and 240 lb-ft, if you’re keeping score.

Future Products—Chevrolet - - Source: Autoweek
GM plans to freshen the line for the 2008 model year. The company no longer is exploring an all-wheel-drive variant that would be aimed at the Mitsubishi Evolution and Subaru WRX. Such a model would be too costly.

He's right. There's a supercharged SS and a regular. If you see two of them sideby side, the SS emblem on one is bigger and bolder than the SS on the non-SC'd version. I only know this because someone in a non SC'd SS tried to raced me, and it completely didnt make sense to me how I romped him, and instead of sitting around thinking my TL is some almighty race car, I stopped by the chevy lot the next day and noticed it. Cool huh? But it kinda sucks for the ones with the SCs

Strong demand for Chevy Cobalt prompts production increase - - Source: http://www.leftlanenews.com
General Motors will increase production of its Chevrolet Cobalt coupe and sedan to keep up with demand, according to trade publication Automotive News. A notice sent out by the UAW indicates production could increase by 24,000 units annually. GM is expected to add overtime shifts to its Lordstown, Ohio, plant to boost output.

Car and Driver first review of 2008 Cobalt SS Turbocharged Coupe
http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...t_drive_review
They mention in the review that a sedan is expected to be released in june as a 2009 model, which might include a navi and bluetooth compatibility. Only thing that sucks is that it has a 5 speed manual currently.

The 5-spd isn't the only thing that sucks currently. Let's not forget the plastic fantastic interior, uncomfortable seating position, horrible driving dynamic, etc.
I had a regular Cobalt for a rental and hated myself everytime I got in it.

The plastics definitely need to be worked on, but it doesnt look awful.
Suspension feel between a regular cobalt and this SS turbocharged are probably going to be different. Thats like comparing a regular civic to an SI.

Using launch control or no-lift shifting gives you the inkling that you’re going to break the car or engine or Saab-sourced five-speed manual—or all three—in half, but Chevy warrants the powertrain for five years or 100,000 miles and says that engineers performed 600 launch-control blastoffs in a row to validate the whole shebang.

Did GM Finally get the message? New Cobalt/Cruze Interior pictures
Do you guys think GM finally figured out at least part of the reason why there showrooms are quieter than a library? This is a pic of the up coming cobalt/cruze interior what do you guys think?
and heres an exterior pic
looks to me like they are starting to take the hint, first the caddy, then malibu, now cobalt?
