BMW M GmbH is set to unveil a BMW M3 in “Münchner Wirte” livery to coincide with this year’s Oktoberfest in Munich (19 September – 4 October). The one-off car will underscore the company’s ties with motor sport in general and the city of Munich in particular. The livery design of the BMW M3 “Münchner Wirte” harks back to that of the legendary BMW M1 Procar from 1981, complete with Bavarian-style façade painting and blue and white twisted cords, along with depictions of Munich landmarks (such as the Olympic Stadium, Siegestor, Frauenkirche church and BMW’s headquarters – the “four-cylinder” building), a roast chestnut seller and the Wiesn-Schänke beer tent at the Oktoberfest.
Walter Maurer is responsible for bringing the design back to life on the current BMW M3. The designer, whose close relationship with BMW dates back several decades, created the livery for the BMW M1 Procar “Münchner Wirte” and painted it on by hand 34 years ago. “Although the two cars are very different, it was surprisingly straightforward to carry over the design from the two-door BMW M1 racer to the four-door BMW M3 Sedan,” reports Maurer.
More in common than you might think.
The new BMW M3 “Münchner Wirte” and BMW M1 Procar “Münchner Wirte” have more in common than just their eye-catching exteriors: both cars offer the benefits of a six-cylinder in-line engine with four-valve technology, rear-wheel drive and the vast pool of racing expertise amassed by BMW M GmbH. The engine powering the BMW M1 Procar racing machine developed 345 kW/470 hp, enabled acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.5 seconds and powered the car to a top speed of 310 km/h (193 mph). The cutting-edge M TwinPower Turbo engine in the BMW M3 comes close in terms of power, producing 317 kW/431 hp to propel the sports sedan to a maximum 280 km/h (174 mph) when the M Driver’s Package is specified and teaming up with the M Double Clutch Transmission with Drivelogic to deliver a 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) time of just 4.1 seconds (fuel consumption combined: 8.3 l/100 km [34.0 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 194 g/km)*.

So how did the idea come about in the first place? “I hatched the plan to turn this very special artwork into reality in 1981, together with my good friends and long-established Munich restaurateurs Putzi Holenia and Karl Heckl, and the then head of the BMW press department, Dirk Henning Strassl,” explains Maurer. A few weeks later the BMW M1 Procar “Münchner Wirte” was lining up in the GT class at the Le Mans 24-hour race, where driving duties were shared by the three-strong line-up of Prince Leopold of Bavaria, Christian Danner and Peter Oberndorfer. The car’s special design attracted a great deal of attention and captured the imagination of many who saw it, as reflected in the number of pictures now posted online.

The races were held on the undercard of the Formula One grands prix in Europe. As well as its exploits in the Procar series, the BMW M1 Procar also saw action in the Le Mans 24-hour race and various national championships, including the DRM series (German Racing Championship) between 1979 and 1986.

Since when did BMW have a 340i?
Is that a replacement for the 335?
Sat it one of them at the LA auto show.

Famously, the original E30 BMW M3 road-car was designed as a homologation for Group A Touring car racing, and in 1986, arrived to begin its course as BMW’s most successful DTM car ever.
A year later, it landed in the States. That was 1987. It’s now 2017, and keen maths aficionados will decipher that 2017 marks 30 years since the E30 was available in the USA. BMW Group Designworks has deemed it prudent to offer a one-off, anniversary edition M3 in celebration.
Revealed at the SEMA show in Las Vegas, the BMW M3 30 Years American Edition – yeah, pretty straight naming structure there – honours the North American introduction of that wily little E30 via a special metallic red paintjob, said to better reflect the E30’s original Henna Red from the Eighties.
There’s more Eighties-spec goodness than you can shake a Stranger Things hat at elsewhere, too. The one-off, lightweight M Performance 19in alloys are finished in gold, inspired by the E30 M3 Warsteiner’s DTM racing wheels. Also, roof stripes on the CFRP roof.
Inside? You get white leather, with blocks of red and blue. Dig even deeper inside, and you’ll also find a raft of M Performance parts fitted to this particular one-off, which, incidentally, is a six-speed manual Competition Pack car. The goodies include M Performance sports suspension (shocks with contrast red springs), which lower the M3 by between 5mm and 20mm.
There’s a handmade, carbon-fibre M Performance rear wing, too, complete with racing stripes, and an M Performance exhaust system with a titanium rear silencer said to evoke “sports car racing”. Though we only wish BMW had slotted in the GTS’s 493bhp turbo 3.0-litre to better fulfil this brief, rather than the Competition Pack car’s 444bhp…
“One lucky customer will be able to get behind the wheel of this one-of-a-kind BMW M3,” explains BMW. Once it’s been shown at SEMA, BMW will provide details of how to buy it.

The BMW M3 holds a special place in the hearts of driving enthusiasts and new details are starting to emerge about the next-generation model.
According to Car Magazine, the 2020 M3 will be equipped with a new twin-turbo 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine known as the S58B30. The engine will reportedly be equipped with the water-injection system from the M4 GTS and have an output that is virtually identical to the aforementioned car. If the report is correct, the M3 will have around 493 hp (367 kW) and 442 lb-ft (598 Nm) of torque.
Besides being significantly more powerful than the current model, the next M3 is expected to be more eco-friendly as it will reportedly adopt a 48-volt mild hybrid system and electrically spooled turbochargers. The car is also tipped to have a more aggressive engine start/stop system that cuts in earlier.
Like the 2018 M5, the next-generation M3 is expected to be offered with all-wheel drive. While the system is standard equipment on the M5, the report suggests it will be optional on the M3. The system will likely work in conjunction with an eight-speed automatic transmission but there are rumors the six-speed manual could survive but only in rear-wheel drive variants.
Aside from the upgraded powertrain, the next-generation M3 is expected to be lighter as it will reportedly use more aluminum and composites. Engineers are also said to be targeting a 50:50 weight distribution and improved torsional rigidity.
On the handling front, we can expect an assortment of high-tech goodies including adaptive dampers, a locking differential, and a brake-by-wire system. However, the report claims the next M3 "won’t be as sharp-edged, harsh-riding, or aggressive as the current car." That's not necessarily a bad thing as the model is expected to become less nervous and "better balanced overall."
Besides talking the about the M3, the report says we can expect the 3-Series sedan to arrive next year and it will be followed by a wagon variant in 2019. The 4-Series Coupe and Convertible are slated for 2020 and the latter model, as well as its M4 variant, could eschew the retractable hardtop for a lighter fabric roof. Perhaps the most interesting detail is a note that claims the next-generation 4-Series Gran Coupe will be transformed into an electric vehicle and it won't receive the M treatment.

I am still trying to find a way to channel my frustration with the M340 being Xdrive only. I get it with the M5.... but it is not necessary for a 3 series that is not even a real M!!!!

Being XDrive with 380 hp, i would expect the next M340's acceleration from deadstop will be closer to the current M3/M4.

^ i dont think all of them will come to US.... i think that is more of the line up for the global market.
I think the US will only get 320, 330 and M340 and Maybe, Maybe M340d, since there is no more 330d.

Wow...per ttribe, that's ALOT of models. BMW's lineup is enormous with all the Series they now have and now this announced engine variants for the 3er.

Good point. I mean, it's just that joking aside, the 335 is pretty much a staple "trim" of the 3er for awhile. It's just odd to not see it anymore, I suppose. It was THE trim for the 3-Series I think outside of obviously the M.
