Yes and No
To be street-legal, an Atom must be built as a kit car. That means everything, including the engine, is shipped to the owner in pieces. An optional road pack, which includes turn signals, a horn, rear tail lights and headlamps, is also available. The owner assembles the car in his own garage, being sure to follow all appropriate, state-mandated vehicle safety guidelines. Otherwise, the Atom is sold as an off-the-road-only vehicle -- not legal on the highway, but perfectly comfortable at the local track.

you also have to wear a helmet when driving. i think i heard it on top gear that in the states its considered a motorcycle because of the open cockpit. and that was why you had to wear a helmet.

Thanks
I'd have no problem about building the Atom, thats half the fun. But because there aren't any tracks around my area, I wouldn't want it to be useless. If I'm rolling in cash, I'll buy and build the kit.

I just saw one of those on my way home from work a couple weeks ago heading towards Raliegh. Those things are low as hell. But it had the whole deal, lights and all.

Ariel: Atom news
500hp V8 Ariel Atom
Hot on the heels of the news of the 1000hp/tonne Caterham Seven RS, Ariel has revealed its own 500hp Atom variant. The exposed tube-frame road-legal race car is already a track-day favorite, and the bump to nearly double the Bugatti Veyron’s power-to-weight ratio will no doubt make it even more fun in the right hands.
The similarities to the Caterham project are immense. Also developed in conjunction with RS Developments, the Atom is powered by a Russell Savory-designed supercharged 2.4L V8 engine that produces peak power at an incredible 10,000rpm. The all-alloy motor features five-valve cylinders and a dry sump oil system. Mated to a Sadev six-speed sequential gearbox, the Ariel Atom 500 is about as close to an open-wheeled formula car as a person can get in a road-legal car aside from the Caterham RS and the Caparo T1.
Blurring the line between race-inspired and race-worthy even further, the Sadev gearbox is flatshift capable, meaning the driver doesn’t even need to lift the throttle to shift up, the computer and gearbox taking care of all the work with the flap of a paddle. Launch and traction control are also standard, and likely almost necessary in a car that weighs a mere 500kg, thanks in part to a large amount of carbon fiber bodywork.
Ensuring the lucky few who get their hands on one of these creations don’t have to cut short their day at the track because of fading or inadequate brakes, Alcon four-pot calipers grace all four corners behind Dymag wheels. Aerodynamics are very important to the new Atom 500, as even the wishbones get aerofoil deign and a large rear wing produces downforce for high-speed cornering.

500hp and 1100lbs?
I'm going to want a whole lot more rubber on it than that.
Comparisons to the Veyron do not apply. Comparisons to GP2 cars are more appropriate.

The great thing about the Atoms too, is they don't have all this tech to be out done 3 years down the road, you could have one and have it be fun, and have it last close to forever.

why? is the base atom not extreme enough as is? if you ask me, the horsepower wars have gone on long enough. focus should be on lightweight vehicles w/ peppy engines, good gas mileage, and low emissions, IMHO

That said, the atom is the shit! I'd love to squirrel one away as a collectible.
