Friend purchasing GTI

Alright.

One of my best friends wants to get an used VW GTI. His budget is $25K. We are in the LA area. Where should we start looking? Any suggestions?

My friend and I have zero experience on purchasing used vehicles..

Thanks.

You can easily find VW GTI's for less than 17-18 grands easy. If he's budget is 25k why not go with the better cars than vw?

with a 25k budget you should start your search at the dealers, looking at new GTI's, you could even find R32's in that range.

In this market you can get a new GTI for that amount of coin.

2008.5 model or better FTW.......you want the TSI engine...not the FSI.

I have to add..

Is GTI good for highway driving in terms of gas mileage? He has to drive everywhere to meet up with his clients for the work.

research the thing! does he even know why he wants to get a GTI?

yea really good gas mileage. 2L engine and you arent gonna be boosting on the highway. Tell him to get a year old one with low miles for cheaper and then to use the rest of the money to mod it. Those are freaking sweet stock and when moded they are just insane.

He's not a car guy at all. He asks me "what's turbo?" He drove the GTI, and he said he liked the "feel" of it. I didn't know what the hell he was talking about it, but he said he wants it. So, I'm fine with that. It's a great car, imo.

So anyway, I've always told him about the first year depreciation. I think that is the reason why he wants to purchase an used vehicle; maybe around 1 year old ones. I've found several local ones on Autotrader.com around 19K-20K.

And, yes, his budget is 25K, but it's not like he has to spend the whole thing right? Why not get a slightly used one to save some buck..

Oh yeah, as much as I love R32s, I think the newest gen. R32s are NOT that much different from regular GTIs. That's the reason why I'm telling my friend to just go with GTI.

It's about 3k-4k difference between the two..

I believe the TSI engine is the 2008-2009 GTI engine (but not too sure) and they come with a timing chain not belt. I have been researching this for a bit because I wanted 1 of those but 32k price turned me off it. And I love european hatchbacks. Tell your friend to go on vwvortex.com, TONS and TONS of information and pictures. VW people are just insane about modding their cars, more so then any other car enthusiasts I think. Good luck to your friend

Why is this so hard?

He wants GTI. Used one. 1 Year old one. (must be MkV right?)

His budget is 25K.

He asks me to help finding one.

I ask AZ to help.

yeah 25 will get you a brand new one with options! and if he waits till the MKVI comes out, you can basically steal one! But the MKVI will have some serious hardware for an econobox, would be hard for me not to spend the extra money. But i read that the MKIV will cost the same as the MKV so his choice would be go for the MKV and save a lot (ahem mods) or get a brand new MKVI...

another gay looking vans shoes with tight pants white boy with key chain on the side? well done civics > little girly GTI's any day. seriously think about it. Why buy a little vw with $25 grand? btw, looks like you didn't get the little update, who said I drive a civic? don't even try to use the term of "rice" if you drive ugly vw's. He doesnt have to spend all $25k at once... he could spend 20 on a MUCH better used car than a GTI or a brand new GTI and then make a couple of nice upgrades ( ECU, Intake, etc)

so at one point youre saying your friend just wants you to help him find exactly a one year old gti
and at other points youre asking about whether he should get a newer one or different model, etc...

so which is it?
and if you really just want to help your friend find a one year old gti then why the hell are you asking us?
do you want us to go on craigslist and autotrader for you or something?

or if just are looking for opinion on what comparable car to get then why are you jumping down v6cord2k5's throat for asking what HE likes better. it doesn't matter if you are a car guy or not. he should test drive both models and be able to straight up tell you which one he likes better. than you can help him find the best one.
