Smile ILX 2016 Shifting question

Hi:

I just got a new ILX Tech Plus...A-Spec....

I've seen lots of videos on You Tube...leading to my question:

On one video...the guy is in S mode....he takes off....and the shifts occur , just a he approaches the red line, in each case.....I'm afraid to try that kind of takeoff !

Will this activity damage things.......or ....in that case ...should I just use the paddles, right from the start ??

The car sounds great....but if I use the paddle shifters....does it hurt the transmission in the long run......if I don't go all the way to red line....but say to 5000 rpm

I want to have fun, at times....but am I asking for trouble?

I have about 700km on the car so far

I'm coming from a 2005 TL.....and so far we and my friends all think quite highly of my choice.

So will paddle shifting in "S"...up to....but below red line hurt my transmission in the long run?

Many thanks !

Chuck.

no.
Honda engines are meant to scream to redline. that's one of the characteristics of Honda. so, go ahead and rip it to 7000 RPM.

2nd, you will not harm your transmission as there are software safe guards in place.

Exactly what he said

If you leave it in S and floor the throttle. The car will automatically hold gears till redline and fire away

If you pull the Padles and go into Sport manual, even if you forget to shift it will snap gears at redline for you if you forget, and if you try to
Downshift too fast to a gear that might over-rev the engine; it will flash at you and won't shift till you slowdown to a safe engine speed.

i.e. Fire away and have fun, this car is meant to scream when you want to, and Cruze around in 8th when you want too also.

Thanks so much guys !! Luv the car......I wanted to go from a V6 to a 4...but still stick with Acura !

It IS a fun car

AND....if you check out various You Tube tests / reports....they mostly all speak very highly of the 2016 ILX

EXCEPT ....for that dork of an automobile engineer ...who reports for Consumer Reports...

Indeed, isn't that funny...

Quite literally every other video and article I've read views the '16ILX very highly, except ConsumerReports. Even the specific points CR brings up that are bad I've seen other reviews praise as good points.

Don't trust that review, its pretty much been shown to be an intentional negatively biased video.

Since you only have 700km on it, I'd wait until it is properly broken in. I wouldn't go over 4500 RPM until around 3000-4000km. There are many opinions about how to break in your car. After that, drive it like you stole it. As many stated, it's a Honda engine, they last forever.

I have a '13 2.4 and after coming from a '07 Si the lower redline in the ILX took a while getting used to so I hit the rev limiter often before shifting, I have almost 36k on mine now and my powertrain/drivetrain work as perfect as the day I got it

The 2.4 engine in the 13-15's (and especially the '16's), have a lot more grunt down load then their smaller 2.0L high revving siblings.

That said, i felt after driving a 6 speed '15 Si that it was difficult for me to shift on time as I was always expected a little bit more from the engines pull and sound. I really 'needed' the shift lights to remind me about the red line.

With the added torq and smoothness of the DirectInjected '16 2.4, I no longer feel that way.

On normal daily or even spirited driving, I often short shift around 5000rpm because there's so much more useable torq down low. That said, when ever I zing it around a mountain road in the 5-7000 range I feel right at home. Gives me the same 'fizz' feeling as my 00 Civic sedan does with its 01 ITR engine. (all be it a little less frantic-ness), but still just as fun and quick to rev as my B18C5 is.
