Hello,

I just recently bought my new Acura 2016 ILX about two months ago. I usually listen to loud music and don't notice this but today I was driving home from the gym and sometimes I do hear the brakes making a bit of noise near the full stop of the car. Do you think that is because the breaks are not worn in yet since the car only has 1400 miles on it? What could be causing this sound if not because of new brakes? Any ideas are always appreciated

I had the same problem with my brakes after about 1,200 miles on my '16. I took it in and they replaced the rotors and brake pads both the front and rear. No more noise now.

I also had the same issue. I took my 2016 ILX into the dealer and they couldn't find the issue. They ended up refinishing the rotors and replacing the brake pads. I haven't had an issue since.

After about the first week of driving I noticed the brakes began to squeak while coming to a stop under light breaking.


Thought it might be the rotors breaking in, so I kept driving for the next month but the sound didn't go away.


They ended up resurfacing the rotors and sanding down the pads. Sound hasn't come back since.


What was a little worrisome was the fact their tech said my rotors looked 'glassed' over. A sign of excessive heat build up and fatigue.


Perhaps the new larger brakes they added to the '16 models have some issues to be worked out, maybe the bias is off putting to much load on them?

This kind of premature heat cycling/rotor warping happens all the time when 89-00 Honda owners replace the rear drum brakes with disks and they do not swap out the proper proportioning valve. It ends up putting to much load on the rears then was designed and can cause all kinds of longevity or safety problems. i.e. rear locking up under braking.

I'm going to make an appointment. I called about this today and they basically said they didn't hear anything on this yet. They would give me a loaner for the day until they do the service work on it. I would like to think since the car is less than two months old, they won't charge me because if it is an issue, it's with their product not anything I could have done.

Also, they tried saying that since the larger breaks on the 2016 are bigger, it may need almost 2-3000 miles on them before they fully break in. IDK how much of that I believe but that is what the service manager told me today when I called to make an appointment.

Don't take that 2-3000mile answer.

By the time I came in I clocked over 3500mi on the Odometer.



You should print out the responses on the thread and bring it in with you. This will likely become a service bulletin in the coming months.





What my Service Advisor told me was, "Normally brake parts arn't considered part of warrantee; but given how quickly this issue started we will take care of it for you"

Just make sure to give them a positive rating when Acura calls you back, (so long as they do it for free that is)

My brakes on my 2016 have also been squealing when light braking to a stop, really annoying. I've been wanting to take it in but haven't had anytime due to my work schedule. One of my mechanic buddies mentioned doing a brake jam whatever that is...idk

My 2013 rear brakes had to be replaced after only about 20-25k. Tech told me to expect the front to start making noise in January if they wear as quickly as the rears.

It is now June and my front breaks are still running great. Obviously there was something up with my rear brakes.

Oh great! So I was thinking about trading in my 2013 TSX SE for a 2016 ILX Premium A-Spec but now this has me concerned. I've had nothing but problems with the brakes on my TSX since I bought it and I don't want to go through that again.

Last October I brought in my TSX in because my brakes just felt shot and my car would shake when braking from higher speeds and I had about 14k miles on it. My rotors were warped so they resurfaced them under warranty. Several months go by and my brakes start giving me trouble again... I take my car in at about 17k miles in March and they resurface my rotors yet again. I was pissed and told them that they shouldn't be doing that more than once but they said they couldn't replace the rotors yet because they were still thick enough to resurface. Well a couple months go by and now at 20k miles my brakes are shot once again so they finally replace all four rotors.

My Acura service department blows and I do not want to go through that all over again.

Honestly man the car is great and the breaks stop on a dime for this car. Only damn thing is after driving for about over 10 miles, it will start making a breaking sound. I personally thing the break pads are to big that come with the car.

After the little service I had done on mine I haven't had the problem come back. Going on 7000miles so far.

I'm sure it'll be something they sort out for future vehicles and will likely do the sanding service before they sell them to new customers.


The brakes are very effective and stop the car in a real hurry. And they never fade even under heavy load on twisty canyon adventures. I love em now.

My 2014 is at the dealer right now for rear rotor noise. They said they had to sand down a small bit of rust as I was making contact with the rotor. This is at 17,000 miles, a little bit concerning.

I don't know... even on my 2011 Civic Si I had some brake issues. I had around 18k miles on it and my driver's side front rotor cracked. I'm really starting to think that Honda uses junk brake components.

Just something that makes me worry about my next model if I do decide to stick with the brand.

I got my Acura 2016 ILX in April. The braking noise started at 900 miles. I took it in at 1800 miles. The dealership claimed they could not hear any squeaking and the brakes looked fine. I was told a service person needed to hear the noise to see what the problem was. The brakes have squeaked since then. It happens on light braking starting at 35-30 mph. It's very high pitched and annoying. I'm making an appt. with Acura and want these brakes fixed. I am not pleased with my first Acura experience so far and even less pleased with the dealership not doing more when I brought it in.

Chalk up another one for 2016 ilx brake noise. Mine started squeaking at around 5500 miles. Going to make an appointment at the dealership tomorrow and I'll report back. Very disappointing.

Now at over 7500 miles, and after the service i got at 3500 I still haven't had any recurrence of the squeal.


Seams like all cars need this service otherwise we get it.

Since I was the one to post about this I figured I would give you all an update. Finally two weeks ago I took it in the shop and all they had to do was resurface the breaks. They said at the manufacture, they're put on mostly by machines or people who are doing them super quick. The service tech said soon as they did that they took it out on the road and no squeaking. I also confirmed that I drove about 800 miles since the last two weeks and haven't heard anything.

Just to chime in with my experience with the squeaking. Bought a new ilx and after about 3 weeks, the brakes started squeaking so they tried greasing it up. Squeaked a day later. Then they tried resurfacing the rotors. Squeaked 2 days later. Then as a last attempt, they replaced the brake pads and resurfaced again. Finally no noise. This whole process took about 3-4 weeks. My dealership was aware of this problem and said that Acura is looking into it already. I recommend for everyone with this problem to keep trying regardless of what they say. Afterall, you did pay for a new car. According to this thread, replacing the pads and resurfacing the rotors worked for alot of people.

My 2014 ILX is going back again for a very loud grinding/rubbing noise coming from the right rear brakes.Will keep you guys updated once I hear back from the dealer.

After going in at 3500mi to get my brake squeal fixed, the noise came back again around 10,000mi.

I'll likely take the car in again sometime this week to have it checked out again and perhaps take advantage of their loaner car program. #TLX anyone? Lol

This certainly sounds like a brake pad compound issue. I suspect Acura will come up with a fix that will be easy to implement.

As a side note, there are zero complaints on the NHTSA website relating to the 2016 ILX. If it were that widespread then someone would have complained.

New '16 ILX A-spec owner here.

I bought the car with 9 miles on it, and around mile 100, the brake squeak started. Unfortunately, it is most shrill and ear-piercing when applying normal brake pressure. A bit harder stop, or barely feathering the brakes yields no sound.

I am probably going to take it to the dealership next week. Hopefully, they can take care of it on 1st pass.

Here is the loaner car they gave today since mine is in to finally have the rotors and pads changed after 5 visits to my dealership and Acura Client Relation getting involved and for all the inconvenience this has caused me Acura Client relations or the dealership didn't want to offer me a discount on any accessory for my car. Great job Acura.

Bought my 2016 in May 2015 and started hearing persistent squeaking witin a month or so. Took it in for repair and they said there was a "unofficial bulletin" out where Acura knows there are problems with the 2016 ILX rotors and pads and they told me they would replace front rotors and pads, which they did, no cost to me. So, just a month later, brakes are squeaking again, I assume it is now a problem with the rear brakes and I am taking it in tomorrow for a look-see / diagnosis. They know there is a problem with the rotors/brakes so don't let them tell you otherwise. They need to fix this free of charge to you!

same issue with my brakes ILX 2016 with 2500 miles, i call cerritos Acura to schedule an appointment the SA tells me there is no recall or known issue on the brakes, i should try to call later like another couple of weeks. would you believe this ? I told her i have Acura news Article says its a known issue and you are telling me to call later !!! I'm going tomorrow to speak to the manager.

Unfortunately my ILX has had the Front and Rear rotors and brake pad replaced 2 times in 1 month. The get louder and louder and have continued to be a pain. During that time period I had to have both drive shafts replaced and front right strut. Contacted Acura Consumer Relations and they have a district case manger involved now. Acura produced new rotors earlier this year and some have not been applied or sent to the dealers. They are also making new pad with less metal and more asbestos. Acura stated that they made them to perform more like a racing modification but have caused a lot of issues with noise and wear.

I am taking my car in for the same reasons tomorrow. My ILX has 6000 miles, and I just started noticing it. Did anyone notice that EBC has packages available for the car for both rotors and pads. Has anyone considered going aftermarket? I know it's cheaper to get it done at the dealership for free, but time it money! haha
