Stock cold air duct

Hey guys it was nice today so I decided to do little modification. I got 3 inch tubing and disconnected the stock resonator from the box then ran the tubing down to the wheel well and cut a hole into it. So far so good the stock piping had so many bends and small holes then it goes into the stock box which is 4 inch. Lower end response is much better but it will need some time for the ECU reset to fully know but the car feel much better more low end power and on highway it moves much better . Second pic is where I cut under the bumper and routed the tube. Spent 21 dollars and made a cold air intake.

Update

Took the car out for a spin this am wow what a big difference it's pulls off like my 4G use to with big power and it feel free open. Highway is even better it pulls soo smooooth and u feel the push back in your seat. I guess over more miles of driving it will get even better. It's kind of like the ice box design. I also have a k&n drop in the box. I couldn't believe the stock piping how it was laid out. This car really needed this mod.

So far sooooo goood it moves soooo much better and on the highway forget about u feel the push back in your seat now it pulls like my 4G use too. The stock resonator was a joke it had 2 small holes then going into another tube up to the intake. Pull off from a dead stop is Wayyy better as well I'm not left behind Anymore lol. Over doing some more highway miles and hard pull off I think it will get even better. It's the same design concept as the ice box but I made a duct outside the car on the bottom. It's only getting air from outside not inside the wheel well where the fan tends to blow hot air from the motor.

Below is a pic of the stock resonant out let that WAS going to the intake. With this removed and straight 3 inch tubing its great.

hmm... i thought i saw a ram air port right near the hood release mechanism on the vehicle's left. I assumed that rushed air down in to the res and then to the intake. Did you notice this when removing the resonator? Did you think about routing the hose to that and then decided otherwise?

I'll have to go take a look, perhaps it was for something else.

yes, that goes into the 2 small holes in the above pic, now the bottom on the car doesn't have any hot air air blowing onto it so its just getting fresh air from the outside. its really good 3 inch hole to suck up cold air. that little port under the hood i left to the engine looks stock

I took a look at the ram air port and it does seem to be going down to the bottom chamber below the air filter box. When you removed the resonator, was the tube heading up to the ram air port part of it? The concern i have is that Toronto had a major flood a few years back and the cold air intake on my 2nd gen sucked up a lot of water. If i were to do this, i would want to connect the hose to that ram air port somehow and not to the wheel well or lower bumper area where i'm assuming you cut the hole.

I also suppose the incoming air pressure would be greater from the ram air port compared to anywhere else.

Where exactly is the inlet for your hose pulling air in from? Can you take more pictures of the removed resonator and finished job as a whole, including the ram air port? Zoomed out and also zoomed in would be great. Thanks, great job!

yup all tubing was up, the hole is directly in front of the drive wheel and if flooding is an issue you should not do this. the hole is directly outside.

Kuzdu, is this some generic piping you picked up from the store? Plan on doing something similar on my 4G to see If i can free up some airflow.

Oh, nevermind. Just saw the pepboys comment. Nice little write-up. Thanks for sharing.

stock system is plenty free flowing

if you want noise, remove the resonator.

if you notice on my pics the resonator has two small holes on the bottom, that is where it goes to the stock air box. Now I have a 3 inch hole direct to the box which allows a ton of air to be sucked up. its made a difference in throttle and highway power. simple mod that saved me 200+ dollars.

so far no problems with me, I've driven in very heavy rain fall and so far so good. you would need to be in a large puddle to suck up water in there

Oh okay, my buddy told me to tell you to measure your air fuel ratio to see if your running rich

maybe i am a bit but without a proper tune most car will run lean or rich depending on the situation. when i had my supercharger i was running lean by far so i needed to increase my fuel ratio to. it made a big gain in power, but then again that was comptech. doing this should not have any dramatic changes on the engine just better throttle and breathing.

I would be amazed (like Jesus-returning-this-very-moment, or dinosaur-walking-down-my-street amazed) if replacing a slightly smaller, more restrictive set of ducts with a pepboys flextube (pre filter) for intake air would cause you to run lean. You're fine. It's not a turbo, it's not even a ram-air setup.

The stock injectors and ECU can handle the additional 2% of air you might be getting now.
