First gear shift in sports mode
2012 tl fwd
Why is it that when im in sports mode and paddle shift into first gear and slightly accelerate, the car will auto shift into second? Even with 50 percent throttle it will shift into second.
down shifting from second to first at around 10 mph itll auto upshift into second......
is this all 4g tls?

so that the driver does not over work it a high rpm and blow the engine the computer takes over and reacts, just as how when your in 4th the limit in rpm is around 6k and hold it will not go pass no matter how much you push our cars, until you reach to 5th it starts over and increase in velocity unlocking the cars capabilty. @rdcstech

After reading this thread I was interested to see what would happen...
My 2010 SH-AWD will hold first gear and bounce off redline in sports mode with paddles activated. It will only shift to second when I tell it to.

Mine will hit the rev limiter as well (2010 sh-awd) my guess is because transmission is different on 2012. It's a 6 speed auto wich would make the 1st gear pretty short that's why it isnt programmed to hold.

4G, '12 FWD. Can't hold 1st, auto shifts around 3k regardless of touching the shifters or not in sport mode. Holds 2nd till redline if you touch the shifters, or auto shifts right before redline in sport but not "manual".

The Original Shawdy
From what I am reading it sounds like the FWD will auto shift out of 1st gear but the SHAWD can hold it in 1st gear until shifted out (via paddle shifter) into 2nd gear.

09-10 TL's will not shift out of 1st in S mode
not sure about 11, but the 12+ will shift to 2.
04 and possibly 05 TL's were the same thing, where they did not shift on their own, but 06+ did. i have no clue why this is.

I drive in manual mode most of the time.
The auto shifting from 1st to 2nd is dependent on throttle. With light throttle the transmission shifts pretty quick to 2nd.
But heavy throttle will hold 1st a lot longer.
Also, when in 2nd with no or light throttle, pulling the downshift (left) paddle will NOT make a downshift. Instead, the M1 will flash and the trans will stay in 2nd.
But with moderate or heavy throttle in 2nd, a pull of the (-) paddle WILL downshift to 1st and if you lift the throttle the trans will tend to hold 1st for a little before shifting to 2nd again.
Lastly, if you are in Manual mode and slow down, the trans will automatically downshift as you slow. BUT... if you do a rolling stop, more often than not it will stay in 3rd and not downshift to 2nd. It is somewhat speed dependent, but I've noticed that with a rolling stop, it will either stay in 3rd, or, if I really creep, it may go into 1st and skips 2nd.
When I leave my neighborhood, I have to cross a highway median and I'll do a rolling stop if I can see there isn't any traffic. I have to manually drop into 2nd because left to itself, the trans will only go as low as third.

Having one more forward gear ratio, the 6AT can now have closer ratio between the 1st and 2nd gears than the 5AT.
The 5AT and 6AT have different transmission shift control programs, thus the different holding/shifting behavior for their respective 1st gear.

Be Yourself: Be Present
I picked up a new 2014 TL Elite(SHAWD) last week and I was disappointed to find that the car quickly shifted into 2nd even when in sport mode. I also don't like how quickly it shifts from 1st when in D.
Is there a way to reprogram/retrain those timings?
