Hey guys, had a friend looking to do this and didn't get as far as the post where the poster changed the O ring on the OTHER side of the pump (the pulley side that I missed).

Can a MOD please add this to the first post? It's the part number for that O ring.

J.

12 91249-PNC-003 SEAL, POWER STEERING PUMP 1 $4.47 $3.31

Could anyone help me do this on my TL, I cannot tolerate the loud whine will driving. I have already changed the o-ring and that was after the dealership did the recall and they replaced it with the orange o-ring. But today the whine has gotten louder and it doesnt quickly go away like before after driving a few minutes.

Are you certain it isn't coming from your tensioner/idler pulleys?
I had to replace that too...sounded like a supercharger but without all the extra horsepower

I'm fairly certain it is the pump, today was the same temperature as yesterday and surprisingly it did not make any noise today. But today I did a power steering fluid change. I will proably do another one soon because the fluid still looked dark but I hope this will fix something.

if it's leaking, swapping fluid won't do a thing, unfortunately.

Hey - thanks for this great write-up. I've done the rebuild, but am having a hard time getting the belt back on the pump. Would someone please confirm the belt's routing? Does anyone have any suggestions for getting it on the PS pump? Thanks!

I.don't recall but can confirm to pay close attention to the ribbed pulleys vs non...it helps find the right routing

Thanks - I was able to get it on. The diagram is correct. I think the "secret" is to wrap it around the far side of the power steering pulley (nearest to the firewall), and then roll the pulley forward (towards the front of the car).

Because my stupid azz photobucket says I've exceeded the limit in hopes of forcing me to be a paying customer although I haven't exceeded.
And I don't know where the originals are anymore either.

Not quite sure if this rebuild will resolve my issue. The steering wheel on my '07 gets really stiff at times, especially when it's cold or if the car is at a complete stop. However, it gets better when at higher RPM. I do also hear a noise that kind of sounds like air when turning the steering wheel. I have about 103k miles. Would just replacing the o-ring in this case be my best first attempt or should I just do the rebuild?

If you can make the noise at a standstill, do so. Then quickly shut the car off and look for bubbles in the PS fluid reservoir. If you see bubbles inside, you definitely should try replacing the o-ring. In fact, it's so cheap you may as well try it anyways.

I suggest starting with the O-ring and seeing if that fixes the problem. It's a pretty quick (10 minute) fix, while the entire rebuild is a little more involved (removing the accessory belt, taking the pump apart, new fluid, etc.). Also, there's not too much duplicative work, so you're not redoing a bunch of stuff if the O-ring doesn't fix it.

Now that I'm bumping the thread, I'll throw out a HUGE thank you to rockstar143 for creating this DIY. The O-ring fix didn't solve my problem, but after rebuilding the PS pump in February 2013, I've had perfectly quiet power steering. Also, when taking off the accessory belt I noticed it had a small hole, so I replaced that too. Who knows how much the $dealer would have charged me for both...?

Well i guess im just one of the very few that have done the o ring and the power steering pump and still have the whine and super stiff steering wheel, with my luck its the rack *shakes head*

Well today i got the car diagnosed, the dealer told me my pump is no good. I just find it hard to believe that even after the reseal the pump is no good. Has anybody heard of this happening? Apparently the pump itself can go bad besides seals and o rings.

I would imagine that it's possible if the little impeller that provides the pumping action is damaged. Other than that, they probably just want to make a sale.

PS guys...I hit my monthly bandwidth views of photobucket, that's why they disappear. The links restore at the beginning of each month so not a lot we can do. I'm sorry...guess my pic whoring finally caught up to me!

Well its covered under warranty so the only thing they'd be wasting is our time. But i must admit im pretty glad its the pump (or so they say) rather than the rack, i'll get back to you guys after i replace the pump this week.

Today i replaced the pump after resealing it did not work. Dont get me wrong this thread is amazing and its definitely worth a shot before spending a couple hundred bucks on a pump but i write this just so you guys know that it is a possibility that resealing your pump will not fix the problem. My pump was extremely noisy but wasnt leaking so soon as i put the new pump in all noise is gone and steering is perfect, hope it stays this way.

Rockstar +1000 to you and this thread man! This whine has annoyed me for so long, and we've had such a terrible winter so far in West MI. Thanks a ton for providing the O-Ring part numbers and this extremely helpful DIY; I doubt I would have been able to tackle this without it. It took me a bit longer as my hands-on knowledge is relatively low, but so worth it. I let her sit overnight to get the engine super cold as I don't have a heated garage at my place. I crossed my fingers, started her up and nothing! I turned the wheel side to side after a few seconds and still nothing.

Also, to those that haven't done it, make sure to look at the SM scans in this thread. I put it back together and then glanced at those and noticed the directionality to many of the parts. I tore it apart again just to make sure I didn't make mistake (part of the reason it took me more than two hours lol). Thanks again dude!

I have an 04 MDX with P.S. whining noise at all times as well as metallic grinding noise coming from the pulley. Sounds like the bearing. Changing the bearing would fix the grinding but what would fix the whining? Would replacing the seals fix it or should I replace the whole P.S. pump? Does the MDX share the same pump?

I can't answer that, but I would be surprised if they were too far off. My reason for full rebuild was it was leaking down the side of my engine.

I am going to reseal my pump regardless, I am pretty sure it is leaking. But was just wondering if anyone knows the cause of a hard to turn steering wheel when first starting up or at low speeds. I see someone else mentioned the problem continued after having everything replaced, I can live with it but wouldn't mind fixing it

I'm a new owner and have the sounds of a bad pump. This is great info and the inspiration I needed to fix it myself!!!
thanks!

I'm not sure, Justin...I had the original post/part numbers and it all got updated and merged by moderators.

There was ONE O-Ring I didn't change on the other side of the pump, but I've had zero leaks since so I'm not worried about it.

any reason y u didnt do that one? forgot or is it a pia? if u don't mind I'd like to call u right before I order what I need just to make sure I got everything right and also to go over procedure if ur cool with it. I'm pretty sure that one of those seals is leaking but I can't see anything except for down by my oil pan (remember I thought my oil pan was leaking?, prolly is that back O rings u speak of since I cant find a source).

LOL...I don't remember this install. I'm old!
I didn't do the rear one because I didn't realize it was an o ring AND it is the hardest one to get at.

The rest are all just take off pump, unbolt 4 bolts and swap out the rings...that's the extent of my memory on it. Feel free to text me on it, but It'll be the legally blind leading the blind.

So glad I found this thread. My pump looks exactly like yours did and it leaks all the way down to the oil pan. I am going to try to tackle this this week and see if this fixes it.
