Check Starting System

Had an issue the other night, drove the car about 10 miles to the Chipotle. Got out went inside for about 15 minutes. When i came out the car wouldn't start, I put the key in and all accessories came on with no problem turned the key and nothing. There was no response from the starter at all. The MID displayed check starting system. I tried a couple more times and nothing then after about 5 minutes it started up like nothing ever happened. There were no warnings about the starting system anymore and everything worked fine. Drove the car around today and it started each time normally. Anybody know what could have happened? I plan on taking it to the dealer to have the system checked but I want a heads up on what it may be before I go.

On my 05 TL, before the starter totally died on me one day, I had a few times when I would turn the key, nothing, turn the key, nothing, and then the next time it would start up totally normally. Nothing ever showed up on my display, but maybe it didn't have that message back on the 05s, not sure what year yours is. But eventually the starter did totally die and need to be replaced. After that, no more issues. IIRC, mine happened at around 75K.

^^^That's exactly what got me home with the last bit of life on that starter. Tried doing the same thing when I got home and it didn't work. Changed the starter in my garage the next day.

I didn't even know you could still do that. Good thing it worked and you made it home. Sucked that it died though.

I was just thrilled that I didn't need a tow truck to get home. I didn't know about the trick either, but my manager called his friend who is a mechanic and asked what we could do. So we found a long metal flashlight in his car, and right as he hit it with the flashlight I turned to key to start it and it worked. That was the very end of the starter tho. We tried the same thing a couple times when I got home to no avail.

Looks like I'll be changing the starter. Is it hard to do?

Hammer trick worked for me on a 94-jeep and a 99-camry before. Glad it worked for you once on the TL :-)

How do you know battery 'seems to be okay'

check starting system is usualy battery starter or alternator.

I'd check in that order. Does it crank?

In my case all 3 checked out fine by the dealer. They suggested to replace the whole computer ($1,200) due to the "know issue".

It does not crank, but if I try 3-5 times, it starts like nothing happened (no delay, cranking, etc.), other than getting the message all the time.

Any other ideas/suggestions appreciated!

I found this old tread, however, if it was discussed recently, please point me to it.

Thanks!

Check starting system ....

Happened to me a few weeks back and like the rest of you said .... It started up like normal! A few days later happened to me again and i called the tow service because it wouldn't start at all! Tow truck driver arrived and got in the car and put it In (N) Neutral and it started right up! So that's another tip is you are in the position that it won't start after several attempts and minutes! 07 Acura TL Type S knight hawk black

When this same symptom happened to me a few months ago, it turned out I needed a new battery cable. They have a way of corroding on the inside even though the terminals were all clean.

Anyone found the cure for this. Working on Daughters 07 TL and it starts perfectly in Neutral but Check Starting System in Park. Seems to be getting worse over the past couple weeks. I found the “Shift to Neutral” trick and that’s working, but I would like to find the cause and correct.

If it starts only in neutral check the transmission range switch. Especially what is going on with pin #10

I have replaced the Range Switch, so far so good, with our Intermittent problem may take. A few weeks to confirm the fix. Thanks for the input.

After a few weeks since the replacement part installed no more issues. Appreciate the information and guidance.
