6spd MT failure in '08 TL Type S
Hey Gang,
New to the board - so bare with me here. I have a 2008 TL Type S with a 6spd MT and 121K miles. I drove it to work last week, parked, it, got back in it at the end of the day to drive home and noticed a "ticking" sound in 2nd gear.
Over the next few days, it got much worse. I now hear it when the car is idling and in neutral, faintly in first gear, really bad in 2nd gear, and faintly in 3rd gear. All gears however, still pull nicely and the car doesn't shake or shimy.
I took it to the dealership, as per the recommendation from Acura, and they pulled the trans sensor out and noticed a piece of it missing. When they drained the fluid, they also noticed metal debri coming out. I was hoping it would have been a throw out bearing or clutch issue, but sounds like, my hopes of that have been crushed.
Dealer is recommending a replacement of the transmission/clutch for $8-$10K - that's not happening!
Did any of you experience a similar issue and what did you do? Also, i'm NE PA, anyone recommend any good trans shops that would do a rebuild?
Looking for feedback and assistance, as I don't really want to get rid of the car, but don't want to pay $8-$10K on replacing the trans.

Look/search for tranny in your area.
then have independent shop replace tranny.

I could be wrong, but, thought they said the trans temp sensor. yes, I asked that all metal that was recovered and fluid to be saved so that I can see it as well.
picking car up this afternoon and will be taking it home and putting it on jackstands and will also do my own research.

There's very few sensors on the manual. I would go in person to the dealer and ask exactly which sensor.
Checking MT TRANSMISSION CASE for 2006 Acura TL
Has usually output sensors and im not sure what the pick-up assy is?
When the car is in the air and wheels moving, is it definitely the transmission? Or is it somewhere like axles or bearing or brake shield?
You say noise is present at idle too now? I would definitely get a mechanics stethoscope and poke around to pinpoint the source of the noise.

thanks - that's probably what i'm going to end up doing. I found a shop in Lansdale Pa, who's familiar with them.
dissapointed in this failure though - i've owned alot of MT Acura's in the past, with alot higher mileage, and never had issues with the transmission.

Meh, find out for sure what part it was. If it can be replaced, replace it and then a drain and fill (or maybe 2) of GM synchromesh fluid and see what happens.

if you are able to Remove and Replace the transmission yourself. will save some of the labor cost.
