WHAT EXHAUST? I can't decide

I'd like to get a cat-back exhaust on my 3G TL-S. The only upgrades I'll probably be doing is a cat-back & an AEM V2 CAI.
I've ruled out the Tsudo, I don't like the sound. I definitely want the quad tip exhaust and I'm pretty sure I want it non-resonated. All are within about $150 of each other so price isn't really an issue. I've only been able to listen to these in videos...
  • ATLP- Seems to be the most popular. I like the drive by sound the best. My girlfriend likes this one the best. I don't like the look of the tips but maybe it'd grow on me.
  • XLR8- I like the deeper sound, but my girlfriend thinks it sounds like crap. I like the angled tips (like my stock ones) the best of these 3 exhausts. It's in the middle price-wise.
  • EndlessRPM- I think it sounds pretty similar to the ATLP. I like the style of the tips better than ATLP. Bonus: $179 cheaper (shipped) than ATLP.
At the end of the day, I want the best sound. Style is a secondary benefit. Everyone's thoughts are encouraged!

xlr8!! i think it's the best sounding one (other than rv6 but no way i was going to pay 1600+ for an exhaust haha)

here's a clip of mine (HFPCs, atlp jpipe, high flow 3rd cat, and resonated xlr8 with a magnaflow resonator instead of the xlr8 one):

Full disclosure: Heeltoe produces ATLP exhaust products.:

ATLP - Your girlfriend sounds like a keeper. Plus, the tips are awesome. They are 100% made by hand from raw materials. You might need to see them to appriciate them. Pound for pound, they are the most extensive part of an ATLP system.
XLR8 - It is not deeper than the ATLP. The ATLP produces better deep tones, which is why it is hard to hear on You-Tube. The XLR8 system is more blatty and burbly. Definitely more overt. I would not say it is deeper than the ATLP though. More "always on," though for sure. Plus there is nothing worse than your girlfriend giving you unending crap about not liking your car. Hey, maybe that is lame....my girlfriend became my wife and for the last 13 years I have come to learn that she's usually right. And when she's not, I am wrong.
EndlessRPM - A great quality part, very middle of the road in that there isn't anything not to like about it, but isn't as sexy as the others mentioned. But it is the most "production" exhaust mentioned, using more off-the shelf components. This is why it costs less.

With style and sound being primary, ATLP is the favorite of many. Although folks looking to save a couple dollars or make more of their presence know will choose the others. There is really no WRONG choice here. Buy ANY option on Heeltoeauto.com for the best customer care you've ever experienced from a car parts store

Is there more crackling/popping (during a down shift) from the ATLP vs. the XLR8? I really like it from my X-pipe and Borla exhaust on my Vette.

Also Heeltoe, your comparison video of the ATLP & XLR8... are they both non-resonated? Obviously the resonated one reduces drone, but does it also reduce the decibel level out the tips? I'm thinking I might want it resonated (daily driver), especially if I decide to get a J-pipe in the future. People say they're getting ~13 WHP with a J-pipe, thats worth every penny!

I have the complete RV6 setup HFPC V3 Jpipe with custom xmerge and was lucky to get on the last batch of the RV^ TD exhaust. The sound is amazing and has the crackle and pop. Honestly you cannot go wrong with any of those options. I was in the same situation that your in right now. If I had not gone with RV6 it would have been ATLP hands down.

Have you heard the ATLP and XLR8 in person? I'm leaning more towards the ATLP. Now its deciding whether I want it resonated or not.

OP, when I bought my 2006 6MT TL a number of years ago, it already had the ATLP exhaust installed on it. When I was looking at photos of the car in the forsale ad, I too did not like the look of the ATLP exhaust tips. I thought they looked odd, to be honest, and I much preferred the look of the actual Type S exhaust tips.

But then I saw the car and tips in person. And instantly fell in love with them. For some odd reason, I think they always look weird in photos. But in person? I think they always look awesome.

Personally, I don't care what someone would think about photos of my car- and part of the reason I never post photos of it. But man, I sure as hell enjoy looking at the back end of my car, every time I come up to it. Especially when paired with the rear Type S A-Spec lip (like I have )

Just something to consider!!

Have you been exclusively basing your opinion on drive-by sounds? I've very rarely heard my exhaust from outside, I had my Dad drive the car a few times to see what it sounds like but that's it. I think what it sounds like inside the car is more important than what it sounds like going by . I have the RV6 exhaust, J-pipe and stock cats, it's a mild setup and drone is minimal plus the little lady approves the sound

Consider a resonated exhaust to help with drone at cruising speeds. I hate hate hate drone, yuck.

Looking for this? Not my car but I can do this to some extent on mine. This guy can manipulate the sound better because 6mt

I think you would be happy with the ATLP

Hey guys!

Why talk about the sounds when you can hear them? You can find a good side by side video here:
The exhaust in the video is our XLR8 non-resonated, so if it's too loud for you don't worry, you can quiet it down by opting for the resonated option! Keep in mind GoPro videos aren't usually the best to judge by because of wind noise and the lesser quality microphone.

3 series stainless steel is a higher grade steel, which has a higher resistance to corrosion than series 4 stainless; this means it will last you longer!

Also, while slip fit connections don't usually come apart for disassembly the easiest there are no gaskets to deteriorate, blow-out, and eventually need replacing like with a flanged system. Additionally with a flange system, if you take it apart then re-assemble them, the gaskets often times don't reseal properly because the flanges (especially with 2 bolt flanges) can become warped or misshapen.

Happy modding!

I think all the systems were non res, but for the sound differences we are showing it is largely irrelevant. You won't really hear much tailpipe difference. And yes teh j-pipes definitely gain power! RV6 V3 for lower RPM roll-on power, XLR8 V2 or ATLP V2-R for mid-range performance, and ALTP V2 for maximum top-end gains.

I would def buy an xlr8 or an RV6 TD, but I absolutly hate how the tips look on every setup. I don't know how easy or how well the oem tips would swap over.

Being new to Acurazine, With my TL I like the XLR8 for the sound and the look of the tips. I like the ATLP but I really don't like the look the tips. They look so uneven. I will likely get the XLR8 with a j pipe

You're much better off getting a long tube J-pipe instead of an exhaust. Not much change in sound but noticeably more power than an exhaust. Then remove your mid-muffler and replace the factory resonator with a Dynomax or a Magnaflow. Be less expensive, you'll gain more power and your car will be quiet when you're just cruising around.

Just stick with ATLP. Marcus has them available because he is a hard worker and a go getter.

I run a set of ATLP and it sound quite good. I may be forced to buy another ATLP, but in 3" for my Turbo TL. We shall see in the next few months what happens.

We need someone in the 3G platform with passion to make these parts for us.
