Simple / Kind of inexpensive Turbo
#2
Gotta pay to play. You could always get an eBay turbo and have some shade tree mechanic fab the rest of the components. Let us know how it goes.

4K to be boosted is not ridiculous at all. Other vehicles that have the aftermarket support to become boosted, can easily cost double, if not more. For example, SRT-8 Jeep (2012+ models) average cost to buy a supercharger kit is roughly $7,500.00. Without installation or and possible tuning costs. You got to pay to play. The best thing you can do for yourself, is do a lot of RESEARCH. There has been and currently are members here, who are boosted. You have to understand what it takes to go boosted. Understand also that you WILL need supporting mods and overall the final process, getting the vehicle tuned. Before even attempting going F/I, you must know if your engine is mechanically sound, as well as the rest of the car is maintained properly. I would use the search function and start searching. Also, you have a better chance of going supercharged vs Turbo. There are (2x) supercharger kits, one from comptech another one that Andy sells which is a rotrex supercharger kit. There is no available turbo kit, unless you build it yourself. Fabrication and quality parts will exceed the 4K limit easily. My 2 cents, the TL is the worse Money VS Performance platform. I'd enjoy the car as is and get a better platform vehicle (AWD and Boosted from factory) down the road.

aaaaaaand that's the last we see of OP
but serious, 4K doesn't even get you boosted. That gets you a kit. Then you gotta install, buy a bunch of supporting mods (a quality exhaust is like 1100 without shipping... That's not even included the J-pipe, PCDs/HFCs, intake. Add another 1100 for that, easy), tuning...
So on and so forth. Just because the car is old does not mean boosting it gets any cheaper.
The one good thing is that if you're patient, you can acquire many of the things you need, used. You can save a bunch of money, but the downside is you don't get everything brand new. For stuff that is located underneath your car, like the entire exhaust setup- who cares. As long as the exhaust tips look alright and the piping isnt beat up, it's all good.
It's also not a bad idea to have 4K just sitting around, just in case. Something is bound to go wrong. It always does when you add boost to naturally aspirated cars. Sure, you can replace the block with another for $500, but by that point, you might as well rebuild the whole thing. No point putting in another 120k+ mile, stock block in, if the first one ended up dying on you.
Personally, I wouldn't even consider boosting unless I had 10k burning a hole in my pocket. Yes, you can definitely do it cheaper. But you get what you pay for.
Also, I assume you have a 5at TL... being a 2005, that transmission is built of glass. I'd look for an 07/08 transmission instead.
